Carrying a Family Through a Tough Economy

CBN.com - Brothers Oscar and Tommy Miskelly own and operate the largest furniture company in the southeast. As business owners, the brothers have had their share of financial challenges. The biggest one began in 2008 when the housing market crashed. It was right after they had borrowed money to build another store and a huge warehouse.

“We saw portfolios go down 50%,” Oscar said. “You really learn a lesson about what’s really important, you know; and it’s family and your faith. You just keep working. You just keep knocking, and keep asking. And I think God honors that.”

Oscar and Tommy know that God also honors giving. It’s something they learned from their father.

“I saw my dad write checks in church and that really stuck out in my mind,” Tommy recalled. “I was like, ‘Wow Dad, you’re going to give that much money? What are we going to live on?’ And he said, ‘You know … this is the Lord’s money!”

Despite the economy, the Miskellys have continued to tithe to their church and give to CBN.

“While it was tough psychologically sometimes to do that, we did it based on faith,” Oscar added. “And we don’t think there’s any doubt but that CBN, 700 Club is a great place to invest in terms of how they handle resources, how they help people … the principles they teach are immutable.

“Every dime I give to CBN, I feel so good about it. I love the 700 Club; it’s part of who I am,” Tommy said.

Both Oscar and Tommy believe that as they continue to give God will carry their family and their business through this challenging economy.

“I understand people’s thought process that ‘I can’t afford to give right now.’ But God’s word doesn’t make allowances for that. He didn’t say ‘if times are good.’ He said be a cheerful giver,” Tommy shared.

“Just test the Lord and see if His word is not true,” Oscar said. “I can only tell you what’s happened in my life. And if you’ll give, God will bless you in turn, financially and in terms of things that money can’t buy, which is even greater.”
