Extraordinary Decor from Ordinary Articles
CBN.com Christmas time is Kristi Watts's favorite time of the year, and she loves to decorate her house. She says her number one challenge in this is that she wants to be funky, fun and creative, but doesn't have a lot of money to do what she wants to do. She called Kristen Garza with Urban Farmhouse design to help her out.
Watts: Oh you made it! Oh I’m so glad. I’m going to put you right to work. So before we even go into the house, this is my challenge number one, this bland doorway. What ideas do you have?
Garza: I definitely think that we can find some cool things inside your house; we can repurpose some things you already have.
Kristi needed an entryway that was a little more welcoming, and boy did Kristen deliver.
Watts: Oh my goodness Kristen, I’m tripping at how cool this looks. And you know what I love the most? I love how you took things from nature that cost no money and cleaned up my backyard at the same time, to decorate.
Garza: Yeah, we literally just took pine trees, pine branches, pine cones, all things you would find out in nature here in Virginia Beach and we basically just put it all together to give it the rustic Christmas look, really classic, and clean and crisp.
Watts: And I've got to tell you, how creative are those cute little boots. Oh my Lord. I have had those sitting in the garage forever, because my son outgrew them and what a perfect little touch.
Garza: Yeah, we found Chase’s boots and we thought it would be so cute to add little presents. I mean we literally just took little gift boxes, you can use food containers, juice boxes work really well too and we just wrapped them in what you’d normally wrap Christmas presents in anyway. And this little black basket, all we did, we didn’t even make this one, we found it at a craft store; but this would be so easy to make. It’s so cute for a snowman’s hat. You just take a wicker basket, spray paint it black, take a larger size lid and hotglue it to the bottom to make the hat brim. SO easy and creative idea. We took some red sparkly ribbon and some red berries and then some pine sprigs and a scarf to give it that snowman feel.
Watts: You know what else I like? This. I always think of a traditional wreath when it comes to put up on the front door; but you did something a little bit different.
Garza: We literally found this lying on the ground, pine cones already attached and we just tied it up with some twine and kept in natural and beautiful.
With the entryway complete, Kristen got to work on Kristi's dining room.
Watts: Kristen, okay, I love this! I love this because I’m always challenged as to what to do and how I can be creative and you came up with some great ideas. Let’s talk about it.
Garza: We literally just took a branch out of your yard. There are two branches we found and they became art on your table. And we just spray painted them white and we added glitter; you can use spray adhesive and then add white glitter. That’s all we did; then we took some beautiful ornaments and here you go.
Watts: And you know, I like the color theme too. A lot of times when we think about Christmas, we think everything has to be gold and red, but you kind of took it to another theme with just adding a simple white, which is really crisp, but green, and the thing I like about that is it kind of matches the color scheme of my house.
Garza: And that’s what we were trying to incorporate. You don’t have to use the red, white and green. And that just becomes, you do the same thing every year, and it’s just expected and you want to do something unexpected, but keep it simple.
Watts: Kristen, I have to say thank you so much for these fantastic ideas between the entryway, and the front door, to this beautiful beautiful table. I tell you, you did it in such and elegant way… girl hug me! Thank you so much. Thank you. And you know you can do the same thing at your home.
