A Simple Solution for Debt Free Living

Mac and Kathy McKinnon are the owners of a commercial landscaping company that has accounts with some of the country’s most prominent hotel chains. The McKinnons are also completely debt free. They attribute this to the Biblical principle of tithing, and giving gifts beyond their tithe. “I know that our increase was a direct result of our giving. I have no doubt about it,” says Kathy. But it wasn’t always this way. Like many young families, Mac and Kathy lived on a tight budget. Mac was a full time college student, plus, they had two young children. Despite their limited income, the McKinnons were regular tithers. After Mac graduated, the family moved to Massachusetts and began a small landscaping company — Aslan Enterprises. “The name is unusual. It comes from The Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis’ books. In that series, Aslan is the lion which is representative of the Lord Jesus Christ,” explains Mac. But even with a catchy name, the business was not taking off. “It was a small beginning, and whenever you start a business you don’t expect to realize a profit immediately,” says Mac. It was around this time that the McKinnons say they received a challenge from the Lord. “The Holy Spirit asked us to double what we were tithing to our local church, so we did that, and then we began getting directed to give to other avenues of the Lord’s work as well,” says Mac. The couple started noticing a pattern. “When I saw the business growing I was astounded,” exclaimed Kathy, “and when I looked at the records I saw that our overall increase in giving was 50% one year, 50% the next year, and the business increased the same amount. One year it increased by 50%, and the following year it increased by 50%. We would send out checks to different ministries and pay bills, and the money just kept coming in. It was coming in as fast as we were giving it away!” The McKinnons are long-time 700 Gold members. Their gifts make it possible to share the love of Jesus Christ with people a world away, and here at home. “I know that when I’m giving money to The 700 Club, it’s helping people that I can’t go and help individually. People get saved; people get healed; and people in hurricanes get ministered to. I know it’s going to a great cause and, I want to be part of that,” says Kathy. Mac sums it up, “If you believe the Lord, if you take Him at His word, it's not a scary thing. When the Lord asks you to do something, He’s going to provide. It’s a very simple process to just walk in obedience.” The McKinnons discovered a powerful truth from God’s word, the Law of Reciprocity. Luke 6:38 says, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.
