Too Many Tragedies

Romnick, 6, huddled with his grandma as a strong typhoon battered their home in the Philippines.

"The wall fell because the wind was so strong! We were very scared," recalls Grandma Violeta.

They survived, but soon realized that Grandpa's fruit trees and crops had been destroyed. And it was harvest season.

"I replanted some banana trees, but it will take time for them to bear fruit," Grandpa Rogelio tells CBN. "I've been helping another farmer plow his field for $3 a day. It's just enough for my family to have one meal. It's been really tough!"

Romnick and his little brother came to live with their grandparents after their mother died.

"I love them like they are my own sons!" says Violeta. "There were days when my husband and I didn't eat so our grandsons could have our share."

Romnick soon began getting sick because of malnutrition and living in a house with broken down walls and a leaky roof.

"Romnick often had a fever and cough because it was too cold at night or too hot during the day," says Grandma.

So CBN's Orphan's Promise came to help. First, we started a lunch program that immediately addressed Romnick and his brother's malnutrition. Now the boys enjoy a healthy meal every day of the week!

"It's yummy!" says Romnick.

"Orphan's Promise also gave us vitamins for them," adds Grandma. "Romnick has gained weight and doesn't get sick anymore."

Next, we built them a new house.

"I feel safe in our new house," says Grandpa. "My grandsons and I even like to play inside now."

Finally, to help Grandpa bring in some extra money, we taught him to make organic compost to use and to sell.

"It really is a good source of income," Grandpa tells us. "It's a big blessing from God!"
