When Success Turns to Failure

“I use to always say that if you learn to be good at sales, you will be good at life because life is full of rejection and negatives,” says Jim Thomas. Jim lived by this saying. At 25 years old he was running his own insurance office, and hiring and training his own agents. “My life was going really well,” Jim says. “I was making money. I was single and dating a lot of women, and I was thinking that this was the successful life. I didn’t realize I was heading for a cliff. I had no idea.” Jim’s success came to a screeching halt when his insurance business slowed down. He found himself monthly in the red and his savings steadily depleting. One by one his agents left, which caused definitive drops in production. Jim was unable to turn the negatives around this time. “It ended up in devastation and destruction for me,” Jim says. “As a result, I came to the Lord on my knees and started reading the Word on my own, and God started speaking to me.” Jim also started watching The 700 Club where he learned about the biblical principles of tithing. In time, God began rearranging Jim’s priorities, and one of those priorities was how he handled money. “One of the things that I had never really sown any seed into was ministry,” Jim says. “When I was a kid, the bucket came around and you put a dollar in or some change. That’s what I knew about giving.” Understanding for the first time that his money was God’s, Jim started to “sow seed” by becoming a CBN partner. Around the same time, he met and married Bridgette who supported him in tithing and giving. And even though Jim’s business was still struggling, the Thomases purposed to give anyway. “I thought for a second, can we keep giving what we’re giving?” Jim says. “No, I thought, I have to trust, because I knew that was the right thing to do in my heart. So I never let up on the giving.” God began to move Jim away from insurance sales, and today his financial planning practice, Legacy Wealth Management, has experienced increased profits for nine years. “I can only give glory to God,” he says. “Sometimes people say, ‘What do you do?’ And the world is looking for some formula. They don’t understand it when you say, ‘Hey, I pray, and I trust the Lord and try to walk in obedience.” God wants to bless you too, just as He has blessed the Thomases.
