Regrets - I Have a Few

Frank Sinatra sang the famous song, My Way, when he wrote “regrets I have a few.” The song is full of all he did with the emphasis that he did it his way. I’m sure there are times in our lives when we wish we had done things differently. We must remind ourselves that if we get stuck remembering the regrets of the past, we’re not going forward, but we’re going backwards. No one can drive a car if they only look in the review mirror. There will be consequences to pay.

I found myself in a season of looking back at a time when I so wished that I could have handled things differently. Ok, maybe more than one time. But the bottom line is that the pain that comes with regret will take you over and bring you to a screeching halt in life. It brought torment that I couldn’t shake myself free of…no matter how hard I tried. I was held captive to the mental torment that as a Christian I should have been a better witness for Christ, but I didn’t.

The word states in II Timothy 1:7,

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

Regret was robbing me of my sound mind. God does not want us living in the past, but in the present with our eyes set on the glorious future ahead. He has destinies, dreams, and a lot of great challenges before us. We should be excited and full of anticipation.

I guess we can compare it to Jesus when He died on the cross. He didn’t need to focus on our sins to the point of being unwilling to die for us. Instead, He focused on what wonderful event He was asked to be a part of … dying for all our sins so we could live forever with Him in heaven. He suffered, mind you, but He did it for the joy of fellowshipping with His people for eternity. He moved forward and we need to move forward too.

I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14

We must continue to press on, say "enough is enough" with regret, and give it all over to the Lord. We can choose to live a life of joy and peace. We will be released to walk with new purpose and meaning. Let’s get excited about the next level in our lives and don’t look back … instead we should look up!

If you have not asked Jesus to come into your heart and life, now is a good time. Jesus loves you.
