Broken In Pieces

One morning, not too long ago, I was sitting at the table reading. I looked over at the counter and noticed a broken figurine of my daughters that needed to be glued back together. The head was laying there along with the body and the legs. “Lord”, I said, “That’s how I feel, broken in pieces.” With tears streaming down my face, I prayed, “Lord you’re going to have to put me back together again. I can’t do this without You.”

Both of my children had moved out at the same time. My son moved to Heaven and my daughter moved to San Antonio. Thank God, I can drive to see my daughter. But I won’t be able to see my son till I move to Heaven myself. Wow! What a tough Mother’s Day this will be.

Have you ever felt like you’ve been broken in pieces? Your life is not going the way you thought it should. A love one passes away you believed would live. A marriage breaks up you just knew would be restored. Your finances or relationships with your children shattered. You’ve been abused in some way.  Job 17:11 says,

“My days are over. My hopes have disappeared. My heart’s desires are broken.”

This is definitely not a very comfortable place to inhabit. You may not feel like reading your Bible and you may not even feel like praying.  But when you look to Jesus to heal your brokenness, it’s the safest place to dwell during a very difficult season of your life. The Word reminds us in Psalm 34:18 (The Message),

“If your heart is broken, you'll find God right there; if you're kicked in the gut, he'll help you catch your breath.”

If all you can do is cry out to the Lord for help, then do it!

Yesterday, I was having lunch with some friends. I was telling them that every time another bottle is filled with my tears, Byron, my son is probably saying, “Oh gosh, it’s just my mother. She’s missing me again!” Like David prayed in Psalms 56:8 (NLT),

“You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.”

Just look what the next verse says,

“On the very day I call to you for help, my enemies will retreat. This I know: God is on my side.”  (Psalms 56:9)

The next sentence out of one of my son’s Devotions causes us to be optimistic: “No matter how bleak today may look, there is always change on the horizon for those of us who have the faith to believe.” Byron Bohnert

Will you have the faith to believe that God can bring change to your situation? He is the One who can put the pieces of your life back together making you stronger than you were before.  By leaning on God, He will cause you to look at your brokenness in a positive way.

As I was praying about Mother’s Day, I was asking God how I am going to get through this holiday without my son. I believe He said that you will get through it because you will celebrate that you were able to be Byron’s mom. Well, the Lord did it again! He turned my negative into a positive.

Be encouraged by these words from Isaiah 61:3 (CEV), “He sent me to give them flowers in place of their sorrow, olive oil in place of tears, and joyous praise in place of broken hearts. They will be called "Trees of Justice," planted by the LORD to honor his name.”
