Waiting is hard. Whether you’re waiting for justice, healing, or a long-prayed-for breakthrough, the space between promise and fulfillment can feelw like a wilderness.

Juneteenth reminds us that even in the waiting, God is present. On this day in 1865—over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation—enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received word of their freedom. This historical delay is a sobering reminder that freedom delayed is not freedom denied.

Scripture echoes this hope. God says in Exodus 3:7, “I have certainly seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their cries of distress… Yes, I am aware of their suffering” (NLT). The same God who delivered the Israelites led the enslaved in America to their rightful freedom. And He is still the God who hears the cries of the oppressed today.

While we honor the courage and dignity of those who endured injustice, we also remember that millions around the world still live in bondage through human trafficking, forced labor, or spiritual captivity. Our prayer today is not only one of gratitude but also of intercession as we ask God to bring liberty and healing in Jesus’ name.

That longing for freedom is something I’ve known personally. For over a decade, I carried a prayer deep in my heart—many long years of asking, believing, and waiting. It wasn’t a casual request. It was one of those heavy, soul-aching prayers that surfaced in tears during worship or silent moments alone. As the years passed, I often wondered if God had forgotten me.

I believed He could answer—I just didn’t know when. I felt suspended in the “in-between”—not in bondage, but not yet free. And yet, like those in Galveston waiting unknowingly for freedom already declared, I, too, was waiting for something God had already purposed.

When the answer finally came—more beautiful and complete than I could’ve imagined—I realized that freedom doesn’t always come on our timeline. But when it does, it changes everything. That wait deepened my faith, stretched my endurance, and taught me to trust the One who never forgets His promises.

Juneteenth reminds me of that season. It tells the story of a God who sees, who hears, and who moves—even when we can’t see it. And ultimately, it points us to the greatest freedom of all—freedom in Christ.

Jesus left heaven, lived without sin, and endured suffering to set us free from sin and death. His sacrifice opened the door to an eternal freedom that no human power can take away. And as John 8:36 reminds us, “So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.”

So today, as we celebrate with family, reflect not only on the joy of freedom but also on the perseverance and sacrifice that made it possible. And above all, give thanks to Jesus—the One who brings freedom that is never delayed and never denied.

A Prayer of Thanksgiving:
Lord Jesus, thank You for being the God of justice and redemption. On this Juneteenth, we remember those who waited in hope, not knowing when freedom would come. We honor their dignity and endurance. We also pray for those still in bondage—physically, emotionally, or spiritually. Bring freedom and healing. Help us never take liberty for granted, and may we use our freedom to uplift and serve others. In Your powerful name, amen.
