Reflection and Awe Lent Series - Week 4 Reflections

This week, we’ve looked at what it means to cultivate a servant spirit. This counter-cultural calling challenges us to put others before ourselves, modeling the humility and love of Jesus Christ!
A Counter-Cultural Calling
In a world that celebrates self-satisfaction and independence, servanthood often feels like swimming against the tide. Yet, Jesus repeatedly calls us to deny ourselves and prioritize the needs of others (Matthew 16:24). Serving is not about losing ourselves but about finding our true identity in Christ as we live out His example of sacrificial love.
The Power of Simple Acts
Small, intentional acts of service, when motivated by love and devotion, carry profound significance. Whether it’s offering encouragement, meeting a tangible need, or simply being present for someone, these moments showcase a heart transformed by Christ. As Jesus said, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” (Matthew 20:26)
Balancing Servanthood and Boundaries
It’s important to remember that having a servant spirit doesn’t mean saying “yes” to everything. Our call to serve is unique and God-directed. Just as each believer is gifted differently (1 Corinthians 12:4-6), the spaces and places where God calls us to serve will vary. Instead of comparing our service to others, let’s seek His guidance, ensuring our efforts align with His purpose for us.
Availability and Surrender
A servant spirit begins with saying, “Here am I, send me!” (Isaiah 6:8). God isn’t looking for perfection; He’s looking for willingness. Like Samuel, let’s answer His call with humility: “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10).
Application Steps
This week, let’s put into practice what we’ve learned about cultivating a servant spirit:
- Pray for Guidance: Start each day by asking God where He is leading you to serve.
- Look for Opportunities: Be intentional in noticing the needs of those around you.
- Serve in Small Ways: Say a kind word, lend a helping hand, or pray for someone else.
- Say No When Needed: Trust God’s wisdom to guide your decisions and avoid overextending yourself.
- Reflect on Your Motivation: Ensure your service is driven by love and devotion, not obligation or comparison.
As we prepare for the week ahead, may we remain available and open to God’s prompting. Serving others in His name is one of the greatest ways to reflect His love and draw closer to Him.
Let’s continue this journey with hearts surrendered, asking the Lord, Is this where You want me to serve Your kingdom?
