Did You Know?

While the term Cenacle refers only to the Upper Room, the building where it is located is prominent for another reason. It also contains the burial site of King David.

As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, "Take this and eat it, for this is my body." And He took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, "Each of you drink from it, for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many. Mark my words‹. I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father¹s Kingdom.”  - Matthew 26:26-29 (NLT)

The Upper Room is also known as the Coenaculum or Cenacle. The Latin word for Cenacle is dinner and is traditionally considered the place where the Last Supper was held.

As you set foot in the Upper Room, travel back in time and imagine Jesus teaching his disciples about humility and servanthood as he washed their feet. The Last Supper is when we reflect on Jesus’s perfect sacrifice and know that when we receive Him, we will be with Him forever (Luke 22:18; Revelation 3:20).

"Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? The one who sits at the table, of course. But not here! For I am among you as one who serves." - Luke 22:27 (NLT)

Not only will you be emotionally and spiritually moved by the Upper Room, but check out the rest of the building for another site of interest. On the lower level, you can visit David’s tomb. For centuries, people have come from all over to pray and pay homage to Israel¹s famous king and ancestor of the Messiah.
