Family: Brittany Died in the 'Arms of Loved Ones'

Brittany Maynard ended her own life Saturday with lethal medication prescribed by a doctor.

"We're sad to announce the passing of a dear and wonderful woman, Brittany Maynard. She passed peacefully in her bed surrounded by close family and loved ones," the death with dignity advocacy group Compassion & Choices said on its Facebook page.

Maynard was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in April and made headlines for choosing to end her life on her own terms.

Maynard's story drew national attention when she and her family moved from northern California to Oregon, where physician assisted suicide is legal.

Her controversial choice sparked debate over right-to-die laws across the nation.

A spokesman for the family said she died peacefully in her bedroom in the arms of her loved ones.

"Goodbye, world," she wrote in her last words on Facebook. "Spread good energy. Pay it forward!"

Maynard was 29 years old.
