Smallfoot: Movie Review

Smallfoot is right on time. The Warner Bros' film opens to a dark and spooky box office, which currently has The House With A Clock In Its Walls in its top spot.

From the creators of The LEGO Movie, this Yeti flick is poised to light up theaters across the country. Its feel-good music, family friendliness, and meaty message are all pleasant surprises.

A young Yeti named Migo knows he's seen a smallfoot -- otherwise known as humans. Problem is they don't exist. The village stones (laws) say there's no such thing as a smallfoot. So, they banished him from the village. Frightened and feeling all alone, Migo sets out to prove humans are real. His adventure leads him on a journey of discovery that changes everything.

As pointed out on IMDb.com, Smallfoot is a bit like fellow animated favorites, Monsters, Inc. (2001) and Hotel Transylvania (2012) in that it brings together two alienated groups who are afraid of each other. The script's unifying community push and conversation about fear for safety's sake are noteworthy.

Rated PG for "some action, rude humor, and thematic elements", Smallfoot doesn't have a bite to it. It's safe for kids of all ages. It's funny, with some great original songs to boot. And, it features an all-star cast of voices, including Channing Tatum, Common, James Corden, and Patricia Heaton.

"A life filled with wonder is a wonderful life." That's a line from Zendaya's big song in Smallfoot. And, she's right. Might I suggest that if you look even closer, you can see that God is at the center of that wonder. Opening our minds and hearts to new revelations -- in this world and about the one beyond -- definitely leads to a wonderful life.
