Senator Joe Lieberman, an Independent and one of John McCain’s biggest supporters tells The Brody File that he’ll speak at the Republican Convention if John McCain gives him the green light. Below is the transcription of his comments. You can watch the clip above.
Brody: In a few weeks, I'll be at the Republican Convention. Will I see you there?
Lieberman: Well, it's not clear yet but you might just see me there. I've said to my dear friend McCain John if you think I can help you by speaking at the Republican convention then I'll go. I'm not going to go to spend all my time attacking Barack Obama. I'm going to tell them all why I am for John McCain and in some sense I hope in doing so I may convince some Independents and Democrats who may be watching or listening out there that they too should vote for John McCain.
Brody: Would you relish the opportunity to speak?
McCain: Well, I'll do it if my dear friend John McCain says that he thinks I can help him by doing it."
He sure is talking like this is a done deal. The Brody File understands that the speaking slots have not been decided upon yet and McCain hasn't made phone calls to any possible speakers.
Lieberman speaking at the convention seems like the perfect move. It helps McCain with independents and moderates, gives the Republican Party a big tent feel and Lieberman isn’t offensive at all to the vast majority of the Evangelical base. It’s not like he’s there to speak about abortion.
Lieberman is the rare liberal Democrat that many Evangelicals have embraced in a very warm way. It’s not just due to his support of Israel. They love the fact that he wears his faith on his sleeve because Born Again Christians know that Jews and Christians have so much in common.
