“Bachelor” Star Shares Life After the Rose

Madison (Madi) Prewett grew up in a strong Christian home. During college, she not only got a degree in communication at Auburn University but was also enrolled in seminary program. Her boyfriend was a pastor, and they were happy pursuing God and their relationship. Yet, after years of dating, they decided they weren’t God’s best for each other and broke up. 

While Madison was leading a college-age Bible study group, a few of the girls commented that she should go on ABC’s hit show The Bachelor. She dismissed it not knowing much about the show but the girls from her Bible study group applied on her behalf.

One day, while Madison was working out at the gym, she received a phone call from the show. Shocked, she told the producer she made a mistake because she wouldn’t fit into a show like that. The producer insisted that Madison was the one they were looking for. Not convinced, Madison asked for time to think about it and immediately called her mom, knowing she would agree that going on the show was a bad idea.

To her surprise, her mom said she should pray about it before closing the door. Madison listened and days later, she felt the Lord confirming that she should go on the show. Madison explains, “Saying yes to The Bachelor wasn’t something I planned. I trusted that this was where God was leading me and I was choosing to walk in courage, even though every voice around me (and even inside me) was fearful of what could happen.” 

During the show, Madison was one of 30 women vying for Peter Weber’s attention. She was the first girl chosen for a one-on-one date with him. The show went on for 12 weeks and during that time the contestants were not allowed to have any outside communication. When Madison missed her family and felt alone, she would read the letters that her mom wrote for her before Madison left for the show.

She was supposed to open one letter per day. Not knowing how long Madison would be on the show, her mom kept writing until she felt led to stop—41 letters total. When Madison opened the last letter, the timing was amazing because she would get to see her mother and family in person the very next day! It was hometown dates on the show—when the Bachelor meets the three finalists’ families.  

Madison and Peter formed a strong bond that lasted until the end of the show. Madison was a strong Christian and Peter admitted that he was raised Christian but wasn’t very religious. The differences in their worldviews and how they lived out their faith began to challenge their relationship.

During the culmination of the show, right before a possible engagement, the show has what’s known as fantasy suites--where the bachelor and each girl are offered a room to spend the night together. Madison told Peter upfront that she wasn’t willing to do something to compromise the commitment she made to God to wait until marriage to have sex.

She also told him that she wasn’t sure she could accept a proposal from him in a week if he slept with the two other women. Peter moved forward and made the decision to be intimate with both women regardless. Madison was devastated! That was the beginning of the end of their relationship, and through many twists and turns, it eventually ended.

The responses from viewers towards Madison were both hateful and encouraging. She reflects, “I have learned a lot. I have learned to praise God for the losses because of what I gained in return. The losses turned into lessons, and the lessons turned into blessings.”

In her book, Madison also shares how her faith prepared her for those moments. She uses the biblical story of Esther to take a deeper look into how you can be ready for times in life that make you, challenge you, and change you. She wants to help readers navigate the complex realities of living in this social media age with such confusing standards. She says that God’s timing is no mistake – you were made for such a time as this!
