Some of the greatest expressions of love come in ways we never expect.

I’ll never forget when my best friend from childhood surprised me with what I assumed would be a girls’ spa day—but transformed into something far more meaningful. As my friend knelt before me and gently washed my feet, I was beyond touched by her humble heart.

While reflecting on that tender moment, I find myself wondering: Can such a selfless act of love ever exist between two enemies?

One of my favorite television shows explores this question in a powerful way. In The Rebel (1959), the late Nick Adams stars as Johnny Yuma—a Civil War veteran who wanders the Western frontier searching for purpose.

One episode begins with Johnny standing up to a town bully and drawing the attention of a female writer. Inspired by Johnny’s seemingly rugged persona, she begins to portray him as a larger-than-life hero in order to impress her employer. As each scene unfolds, her embellished stories cause the townspeople to ridicule Johnny rather than admire him.

When Johnny realizes his reputation is nothing short of a farce, he goes looking for the same man he had confronted earlier—and does something no one expects. Rather than asserting dominance, Johnny kneels down and shines the man’s boots—refusing to accept such false glory.

That scene will always stay with me, as it paints a stunning picture of grace in the face of hostility. But even that moment pales in comparison to the example Jesus gives us in John 13. Here we see the King of Kings washing the feet of His disciples. Among them is Judas, the one who would soon betray Him.

And still, Jesus says, “Since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.” (John 13:14-15 NLT)

It’s natural to love those who treat us well. Yet Jesus calls us to something greater; He calls us to love our enemies. Because that is the heart of the Gospel: to love others, even when it’s undeserved.

Is there someone in your life who has hurt you, misunderstood you, or wronged you? What would it look like to “wash the feet” of that person? What if we chose kindness instead of retaliation or offered forgiveness instead of holding on to bitterness?

Johnny Yuma didn’t set out to bless his enemy—but when the opportunity came, he chose humility. Jesus didn’t just teach His disciples about humility—He embodied it, even as He served the one who would betray Him. And He invites us to do the same.

Who is God asking you to serve today—even if he or she doesn’t deserve it?

Dear Lord, today I humble myself before You. Teach me to love like You—and serve others with humility, even when it’s difficult. Give me the strength to forgive, the courage to show kindness, and the grace to love my enemies. Help me to reflect Your compassion toward others in every situation. In Your precious name, I pray. Amen.
