The most common word for oil in the Bible is the Hebrew word shemen. The short definition is oil and it is used approximately 192 times in the Bible. When the word shemen is used, it is largely referring to olive oil.

Command the people of Israel to bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to keep the lamps burning continually. - Exodus 27:20 (NLT)

Olive Oil is considered holy and adored partly because of the amount of work that goes into harvesting enough olives to create it. Olive oil has been mentioned countless times in the Bible for sacred purposes: Kings of Israel and kings of Judea were anointed with olive oil while being enthroned.

Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it over Saul¹s head. He kissed Saul and said, "I am doing this because the Lord has appointed you to be the ruler over Israel, his special possession." - I Samuel 10:1 (NLT)
