Pray for America - Day 4
When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches. Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice. — Psalm 63:6-7
DAY 4: "Remembering God's Faithfulness"
President Lincoln began his Gettysburg Address by reminding his listeners that 87 years had passed since America’s forefathers brought forth a new nation. He concluded his address by stating that we are one nation under God, having a new birth of freedom, and that the government “of the people, by the people, and for the people” would never perish. A little over two minutes long, Lincoln’s address would become one of the most remembered speeches of all time.
God gave His command to Joshua to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. The priests bearing the Ark of the Covenant led the way. When they reached the Jordan River and their feet dipped in the water’s edge, the river parted. The priests with the Ark remained in the midst of the river until all the people had crossed. Joshua set up two memorials, each with 12 stones, as a remembrance of God’s faithfulness, one in the midst of the Jordan, and the other at Gilgal. The memorials would serve as a reminder of God’s faithfulness from generation to generation.
When the first settlers landed on the shores of Cape Henry in Virginia, their very first act was a prayer of dedication over America and the planting of an oak cross for God’s glory. We need to be reminded of America’s spiritual heritage and how our forefathers committed this land to God. Let each of us pray with thankful hearts—and may we rise up to be the unified voices of America, declaring God’s faithfulness both now and for future generations to come.
