Prove Yourself Worthy

A number of years ago when I was working at CBS, I hit a low point in my career. I didn't get either of two frontrunner positions I was seeking covering the NCAA. My sister and my wife (who was then my girlfriend) sat me down, and they both told me the same thing. One must prove himself worthy, faithful and obedient in whatever he's doing. You have to continue to prepare yourself for future opportunities so that when the time comes to take advantage of that opportunity, you'll be able to flourish in that position.

First Kings chapter two tells us to be strong and prove ourselves. Verse three commands us to keep the charge of the Lord your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn.

The disappointment of missing out on those positions also underscored the need for me to continue to grow as a Christian. I've found that the more visible you become, the more challenges you'll face that will test your walk, test your faith and test your strength. So, there was a two-fold thing happening: I wasn't only trying to become better and more grounded in my professional pursuit at that time, but was also trying to become a stronger Christian.

I can absolutely say I had no idea what would happen after I didn't get either of the jobs I wanted at CBS. But today, I'm on a major program (Fox NFL Sunday) that s the lead NFL pre-game show. And because of what happened I can handle whatever comes my way with confidence.

On the spiritual side, I know I'm a stronger Christian than previously and more capable of handling these types of situations if I stand firm on my Christian values. And I'm going to continue to stand on the tenants of my faith because I'm a stronger person as a result of that earlier disappointment. I also recognize where all promotions come from and from whom they come. Today, I have a stronger base to stand on that rock named Christ.
