McCain’s Second Thoughts on Pastor Hagee

04-21-2008

Maybe John McCain shouldn’t have sought and accepted Pastor John Hagee’s endorsement. Those aren’t my words. That is what John McCain is saying. Read below from ABC News:

Republican nominee Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., admitted this morning that it was a mistake to accept the endorsement of Evangelical pastor Rev. John Hagee. When asked in an exclusive "This Week" interview with George Stephanopoulos if it was "a mistake to solicit and accept his endorsement", McCain replied "oh, probably, sure." Despite admitting his error, McCain made clear he's still "glad to have his endorsement."

McCain spoke out against Hagee's "condemning of the Catholic church," but added that "I admire and respect Dr. Hagee's leadership...  I admire and appreciate his advocacy for the state of Israel, the independence of the state of Israel." McCain has previously admitted to soliciting Rev. Hagee's endorsement.

Watch the McCain interview here. The Hagee comments are about 16 minutes into the video.

This whole Hagee thing has been a problem from the start. McCain received criticism for accepting the endorsement in the first place. Now he admits he shouldn’t have gone after the endorsement so he’s going to get criticism from some Evangelicals on that as well. The Hagee endorsement is a good example of the high wire tight rope walk John McCain will have to perform throughout this campaign.
