LEE WEBB: From the fattest city in America, one pastor challenges his church . . . . Pastor: What we do with our bodies matters to God. LEE WEBB: . . . . and gets them to lose a ton of weight. Plus: Woman: They don’t really like us. LEE WEBB: And she didn’t like them. Woman: It’s “us” and “them.” LEE WEBB: One former racist gets a lesson in diversity. Woman: All things are possible. * * * PAT ROBERTSON: Well, welcome to The 700 Club. It surprised nobody, certainly not me, that Mitt Romney was double-digit lead yesterday in New Hampshire, and that means two for two. He won Iowa and he won New Hampshire, and that frankly is a big deal. If he goes into South Carolina, and we’ll talk more about his opponents, what's been happening. KRISTI WATTS: We will, Pat. In fact, our reporter David Brody has this look at Romney's victory, and what's ahead in the presidential race. NEW HAMPSHIRE Woman: I want to introduce the man who we all believe should be the next president of the United States, Mitt Romney. DAVID BRODY: After a widely expected victory, Mitt Romney preached his message of a better America to a cheering audience. Mitt Romney (R-Presidential Candidate): We are one nation under God. Make no mistake. In this campaign, I will offer the American ideals of economic freedom, a clear and unapologetic defense, and we’re going to win with that message. DAVID BRODY: Exit polling showed electability and experience as the most important factors for New Hampshire voters. That played to Romney's strength. The Obama reelection campaign is also aware that his reputation as an economic "Mr. Fix It" would present a huge challenge in a general election. Romney Supporter: He's a very smart businessman. He knows what he's doing. I'm a manufacturing guy, and he's going to bring back manufacturing in America. Romney Supporter: The country really needs experience. Problems are large and he has done some of it. DAVID BRODY: While Romney's first place finish wasn't really in doubt, the rest of the order was. Ron Paul claimed the coveted second place spot. Ron Paul (R-Presidential Candidate): The intellectual revolution that’s going on now to restore liberty in this country is well on its way, and there's no way they are going to stop the momentum that we have started. DAVID BRODY: Jon Huntsman, who spent nearly all his time in New Hampshire, placed a disappointing third. Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich battled to a tight finish for fourth and fifth place, but both of them say they'll do much better in more conservative South Carolina, where evangelicals will play a bigger role. Rick Santorum told CBN News that this race won't end even if Romney also wins South Carolina. Rick Santorum (R-Presidential Candidate): Obviously the sooner this could be a two-person race, the better. But there's plenty of time. I mean, this race isn't going to be over in South Carolina, as much as the media would like to have you believe that, “Oh, he'll be unstoppable.” They've said he was unstoppable before the first vote was cast. PAT & DAVID BRODY PAT ROBERTSON: Well, we have David Brody with us. I think he’s on a telephone line. GRAPHIC: AFTER NEW HAMPSHIRE David, what do you think? It’s surprising Gingrich and Santorum were locked in a tie for fourth and fifth. That isn't too swift. What do you think? DAVID BRODY: Well, first of all Pat, I feel like it's 1970s. I’m talking to you in the phone here. I enjoy this, but at least we are talking, and I can see you and you can see me. But, look, I mean, Santorum and Gingrich are going to play for another day in South Carolina, and, Pat, you know this, it's all going to come down to South Carolina. They’ve picked every Republican president since 1980, and it's probably going to happen again. So this is what you are going to have going on in South Carolina where Gingrich and Santorum, the odds are already up. Gingrich is out with a nasty, I shouldn't say nasty, but a real hard-hitting ad on abortion that was in Romneycare. Planned Parenthood was put on a board that was part of Romneycare. That's already going on in South Carolina where Perry is hitting him already hard. So Romney, the way I like to tell you about this, Pat, is that it's more like road game for Romney, not a home game. New Hampshire was home turf; now he goes to South Carolina. Just basketball team, he’s going on the road. It's going to be tough. PAT ROBERTSON: David, Newt Gingrich has come through as the wise avuncular elder statesman, and as that he was leading the polls. Now is coming through as kind of a mean-spirited little fat man, and how is that going to play? DAVID BRODY: Well, he has realized that his reputation has been, the way he sees it, smeared by Mitt Romney. He's angry about it, Pat. So he's now going to get him back, and what a shock, presidential politics getting pretty nasty. Newt Gingrich made the calculation in Iowa, in December, when he started to rise, that he was going to stay positive, and that he was going to be the debate truth teller, the soothsayer, and it was working for him in Iowa. The problem was, Romney's super PAC went up. He got bombarded with negative ads, and it hurt him. It hurt him bad. And he's frustrated. He's angry. You're going to see all of this play out in South Carolina. It's going to be absolutely nasty. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, that's not going to win him anything. All it will do, but it's all over with, it'll make him go into irrelevancy, whereas before if you stay positive he was the wise men, the elder statesman. That's a terrible role to give up. DAVID BRODY: Pat, here's the problem. He was staying positive with no money. And Mitt Romney was going negative if you will, against Gingrich you tons of money. GRAPHIC: ON THE PHONE DAVID BRODY MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE And as you have been saying all along, it's all about the money Pat. And Gingrich may have done well in the debates, but he didn't have any money to compete. So he has to do something now, and at least they feel like he has a shot here. Newt Gingrich, I was on his bus two days ago when he said, “I'm going to be in this to prolong the nomination,” because he wants to expose Mitt Romney. He may be doing the party a great disservice, but at this point he hopes to be the conservative alternative to Romney, make it a two-man race. Of course, everybody wants to make it a two-man race. They believe the Gingrich campaign and, quite frankly, the Romney campaign believes that Gingrich is his toughest competitor out there. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, he has been, and of course politics is a contact sport. They block and tackle, and they hit hard; and they hit him hard now. He should have just rolled with it and acted like it didn't happen. It isn't your attacks that get you, it's your answer to the attacks they get you. What about Santorum? He's a good guy, but I knew he wasn't going to do anything in New Hampshire. The message that he's given, the conservative pro-life message just doesn't resonate too much in New Hampshire. It might in South Carolina. What you think? He's going to get tarred as being a fourth or fifth place loser in New Hampshire. DAVID BRODY: It's always tough sledding up here for Santorum, and he knew that. He did very well, actually, in exit polls with the evangelicals up here. The problem is, not too many of them. But down in South Carolina, it's a much different story. This is all about who can come out of South Carolina. The truth of the matter is, Pat, after South Carolina one of these guys, Perry, Gingrich, Santorum, one of them is going to drop out. The one that is far behind in the polls. Then we'll see what happens after that. Because let's just say, for example, Perry doesn't do well, and the train may have left the station on Perry to degree because of some of the “oops” moments and some of the other things going on earlier in the campaign. If Perry drops out, that's going to leave, let's say Santorum, and a Gingrich, or two others. One of them obviously will continue on to Florida. The question is that middle guy, what does he do? Does he coalesce behind the guy that did well in South Carolina and get out, and make a run in Florida for the guy who did well in South Carolina to take on Romney? You know, this is tough sledding for all of these so-called “more conservative” candidates. PAT ROBERTSON: You know David, they're not going to coalesce. They just won't do it. Each one will think he's going to win, and not going to give up for the other one. As far as Perry, he was with the Fox News last night, and it was unbelievable how mean he was. I mean, he looked mean. He looked nasty. The American people don't want somebody mean and nasty. They want, “It’s morning in America.” They want hope. He's talking about a factory that got shut down. You know any of the facts on those, what Bain did with some of those companies? There were a couple of companies that they took over. I guess they had to liquidate them. What's the story, do you know? DAVID BRODY: Well, the way the Romney campaign explains it, at least from their point of view, it is that the net gain was 100,000 jobs. Now some people have taken, not just the Democrats, but even some Republicans take issue with, do you really create 100,000 jobs or not? But the issue for Romney isn't so much the hundred thousand jobs, it's how this went down, how they went about it. In other words, a lot of people were fired as they went in and restructured. Now that's part of business, but the problem is that Gingrich, here we go again, Gingrich is coming out a 30-minute, this is a super PAC, a super PAC that supports Gingrich, coming in with a 30 minute campaign ad talking about that went down at Bain Capital, and now we're going to start to see stations of people actually fired. It's going to be nasty, Pat. As for Rick Perry, he talked about not venture capitalism that Mitt Romney was doing, but vulture, capitalism. My goodness, he’s even put this, they've taken it down now, but even put out a ring tone, the campaign, the Perry campaign put out a ring tone which says, “I like to fire people.” That's the new ring tone that the Perry campaign put out, and then they said, you know we're going to take that down. And we're just beginning, Pat. We've got 10 days of South Carolina. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, let's hope it doesn't get much worse. But David, thank you for being with us. Ladies and gentlemen, I am appalled. I came from the old school which said, as far as Republicans, “Thall shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican.” This thing is ridiculous, and so what do Perry, and what do Newt Gingrich gain? They gain nothing except weakening the eventual nominee of their party, and their goal should be to defeat the opposite party, not to defeat one of their own. This stuff, they're attacking Romney from the left. They are coming against Romney from the right. They're coming from the left. This is the word from the labor unions. This is the word from the so-called progressives. This would be what you’d find from occupy Wall Street. They're not coming at it as standard Republicans. I'm sure that Republican voters are going to say “we don't really want this.” But at the same time, all they're doing is weakening their nominee. Well, I want to say something about Romney. I thought his speech in New Hampshire was magnificent. It was a ringing call to rebuild America and to lift us up, and it was the kind of stirring presidential address that you look for a future president. It sounded very Reaganesque, and I congratulate him for that. Well, Lee Webb has the rest of our top stories from the CBN newsroom. What else is happening? TEXAS ABORTION LAW UPHELD LEE WEBB: Pat, a federal appeals court says Texas can enforce it’s new abortion law while it’s being challenged in court. That law requires doctors to show sonograms to women who want abortions. Doctors will describe images seen in the sonogram, including the fetal heartbeat. The law passed last year, but a judge issued a temporary order preventing its enforcement. Jonathan Saenz of the Liberty Institute provided the main legal testimony for the bill. He calls the ruling “one of the most important victories in the past 10 years.” He says, "Women and unborn children in Texas are no longer subject to the abuse of abortion doctors who deny women critical, medical information.” Texas Gov. Rick Perry applauded the ruling while he was on the campaign trail yesterday. N.C. EUGENICS RULING LEE WEBB: A North Carolina task force recommends that victims of forced sterilization should receive $50,000 in compensation. A eugenics program in that state decades ago forced about 7,600 sterilizations. The program was meant to weed out people who were described as "feeble-minded" or "undesirable." About 2,000 of those victims are still alive and could be eligible for the compensation. The payout still needs to be approved by the North Carolina legislature. But the governor and House speaker have already come out in favor of the proposal. SCIENTIST KILLED LEE WEBB: An Iranian scientist working at a key nuclear facility was assassinated in Tehran. Thirty-two-year-old Mostafa Ahmadi-Roshan was killed when two people on a motorcycle attached a magnetic bomb to his car. Iran’s vice president is blaming Zionists for the attack. It comes as Iran says it will begin enriching uranium at a new underground facility. Chris Mitchell has that story, now, from Jerusalem. CHRIS MITCHELL: This satellite image shows the Fordo facility near the Iranian city of Qom. It’s built into the side of a mountain. That makes it a difficult military target. Yaakov Katz (Military Correspondent, Jerusalem Post): Even Israel's Defense Minister Ehud Barak has said it is immune to conventional military strikes. CHRIS MITCHELL: Yaakov Katz, military correspondent to the Jerusalem Post Katz says the Fordo facility should alarm the West. Yaakov Katz: Because that would mean a further fortification of their uranium enrichment capability, something that's possibly immune to conventional military strike. Maybe there's another way to attack it, but it would make it all the more difficult, and that means that time is closing, that the window of opportunity is closing. CHRIS MITCHELL: The European Union will meet later this month when it’s expected to they impose a ban on buying Iranian crude oil. This follows a US law signed by President Obama on New Year's Eve to stop payments for Iranian oil. The new sanctions seem to be having an impact on Iran's economy. It’s currency lost 20 percent of its value in the past week alone. Mean while, Iranian media reported one of its nuclear scientists was killed by a bomb on Wednesday. An Iranian official blamed Israel for the bombing. Several Iranian nuclear scientists have been assassinated in recent years. Chris Mitchell, CBN News, Jerusalem. LEE WEBB: Pat, do you believe that those assassination, the covert operations that are going on in Tehran, and all over Iran, are an indication that Israel and the US believe they don't have a military solution to the problem? PAT ROBERTSON: No, I just think Israel wants to take the easy way, and easy ways to kill off a few scientists. It will put terror in the rest of them. They won't know who's going to be next, and Israel has got a very strong presence in Iran. There isn't any doubt about it, and it's just a question of how it's going to be exercised. I think the next thing it will be, they'll wrap up the military option, but they'd rather not. We all would rather not. But the best way to overcome this is to foment a strike among the students and the workers to do a regime change. Those mullahs have got to go. Israel knows that, and Israel's going to try to do something. How they're going to do it, we don't know. If the currencies losing value, and inflation is going up, and the people are beginning to have shortages, they will rise up against the regime. They don't like it. They could overthrow it, and that's what Israel would hope for. Lee. BINGE DRINKING LEE WEBB: A new report by the Centers for Disease Control Prevention highlights the dangers of binge drinking. College-age drinkers average about nine drinks a night when they binge. Nearly one in six adults in this country over indulge at least once a month. Men are most likely to binge drink; so are people who’ve been to college and those with incomes of $75,000 or more. Health officials say binge drinking accounts for more than 40,000 deaths a year, Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, more than that, the brain of a young person isn't fully formed. All of the processes that are needed don't all come together until they get to be 25, 26, 27, something like that. And so, if somebody's 18, 19, and they start blasting away alcohol, they're going to permanently destroy cells in their brain that they're going to need for critical thinking. I don't think people tell them that. So they take a few belly shots or whatever they have, and they have a big party. Well, 10 years down the road, they're going to be stumbling around stupid. Kristi. KRISTI WATTS: I agree Pat. Well, up next, growing hostility against Christians in the United Kingdom. Man: They are a campaign groups that want to push Christianity out of public life. Woman: When people stand up, they find themselves talkative. They find themselves misrepresented in the public sphere. KRISTI WATTS: Let’s see how one church is fighting back, after this. It's time that the People's voice be heard. Spokesman: Americans have spoken in record numbers to repeal Obamacare. On October 5th we delivered 1.6 million petitions to the Senate making it the largest citizen petition drive in US history. Now we urgently ask all previous Repeal Obamacare petition signers. and a million more concerned Americans to pick up the phone within the next 10 minutes. We must convince these senators to honor the will of the American people. Add your voice to immediately bring Obamacare to the floor of the Senate for a new vote. We are asking all original petition signers, plus one million more concerned Americans, to call now to send massive waves of phone demands into the Senate. Plus: * * * GRAPHIC: DOWNHILL SKIER Man: When I saw these guys doing tricks and flips. LEE WEBB: A skier about to go pro . . . . Man: I learned this new trick the week earlier. LEE WEBB: What got him back on the slopes, tomorrow on The 700 Club. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: Well, it’s probably no surprise that you learn that Christians in the United Kingdom, that’s Great Britain, are facing hostility on many fronts, the top levels of government to local city councils in secular organizations. But, as Mark Martin reports, these attacks are waking up a sleeping giant. FOCUS: CHRISTIANITY MARK MARTIN: More than 400 years ago, English explorers brought Christianity to the New World. Spreading the Gospel was a mandate in the England of old. Street Preacher: I want to tell you that the same Jesus that radically transformed . . . . MARK MARTIN: Today in the United Kingdom, sharing that Christian faith could land you behind bars. Under current law, using "insulting words or behavior" is a criminal offense. As a result, police have arrested a number of Christians, including street preachers, because listeners considered the message insulting. Shepherd Masango (Christian Street Preacher): I think that personally there is a decline in just the knowledge of God and in the love of God. There's a lot of people that we speak to on the streets, 16-year-olds or below, people that have never grown up going to church; and people have just radically turned away from God and are just following different kinds of things. Mike Judge (The Christian Institute): There are campaign groups that want to push Christianity out of public life. They regard religion, and particularly Christianity, as something of a private affair and should have no role to play in public life. MARK MARTIN: Mike Judge works for The Christian Institute which is defending the Bideford Town Council against a lawsuit by the National Secular Society. That group, which is similar to the ACLU, claims praying at council meetings, a practice that started in the days of Queen Elizabeth I, discriminates against people of no religion. The NSS posted this photo of smiling staff members outside the high court on its website. But for Mike Judge and The Christian Institute, the matter is nothing to smile about. Mike Judge: This is a very serious hearing. It's the first time that the saying of prayers at civic events has been challenged in the high courts. Now the saying of prayers is entirely voluntary. No one's compelled to attend; and, yet, it was taken to court. MARK MARTIN: If the judge rules against prayer, it could affect councils across England and Wales, since most pray during their meetings. Other councils are already reconsidering their policies in light of the lawsuit. (Liverpool, England): While there's a push to ban prayer in city council meetings, other local councils have banned Christian words and phrases from advertisements. On the other hand, homosexual activists appear to be gaining favor with government groups. For example, here in Liverpool, the city became the first in the UK to put homosexual rainbow emblems on some of its street signs. Europe’s largest gay news service, Pink News, quoted Liverpool city councilor Nick Small as saying, "The new signs clearly show that we are recognizing where the LGBT scene is based in the city, and that it is a very important part of our city life. The Liverpool council has also spoken out against Frontline Church, a local evangelical non-denominational church. The church published a resource online which labeled homosexuality “a sin” and suggested ways to help people wanting out of that lifestyle. Frontline Church told CBN News that, while it removed the material because it did not adequately address the complexity of the issue, the church has not changed its stance on homosexuality. John Harding (Frontline Church, Liverpool): We believe that the Bible teaches that heterosexual marriage is the only context for sexual relationship. All people—we're all sinners. We're all saved by grace, those that know the Lord Jesus. So we don't see it as any different to any other issue, but what we're very clear on is that we don't judge people; we don't condemn people. MARK MARTIN: Other organizations have distanced themselves from Frontline Church, including a city housing association that funds a food bank at the church and the police department, which has been recognized as the second most gay-friendly force in the UK. Andrea Williams (Christian Concern): When people stand up, they find themselves targeted. They find themselves misrepresented in the public sphere, and that's the sort of thing that is happening. But Frontline Church is a church that loves, that wants to reach out to the community, that will stand no matter what it takes. MARK MARTIN: A new government-sponsored survey shows the number of people in England and Wales who consider themselves Christians dropped 10 percent in five years. During that same period, those who say they have no religion increased from 15 to 21 percent. (London, England): Although Christians in the UK are in the middle of an intense spiritual battle, they say they are witnessing encouraging signs of the healing power of Jesus Christ. The prayer rally behind me in front of St. Paul's Cathedral in London is one example. Pat Allerton (7:14 Prayer Rally Coordinator): It's cold; it's wet, but still we saw, whatever it was, 500-600 people to pray and worship Jesus. Woman: Where the economy is struggling, Father God, we pray and ask for a solution, and may it be rapid, Father God. MARK MARTIN: The 2nd Chronicles 7:14 prayer rally followed a Not Ashamed Day gathering, both events held adjacent to the Occupy London tent city. Andrew Marsh (Christian Concern): There's a deeper problem. These things are not actually the root cause; they’re symptoms. But actually Jesus has answers for these issues, for individuals, for communities, for nations, for our world, because He transforms lives. Rob Joy (Evangelist, www.notashamed.org.uk): The thing that stops me from taking crack cocaine every day is that Jesus Christ took the root out of addiction in my heart. MARK MARTIN: In spite of the attacks on Christianity, many UK believers have not lost hope that revival will return, battling one challenge at a time while embracing hurting souls. Mark Martin, CBN News, England. PAT ROBERTSON: The Bible says that he who sits in the heavens shall laugh them to scorn. The time is going to come when those who have been shaking their fists at God have the measure of his judgment poured upon them. Right now is the day of his salvation, and God is offering salvation to people who will listen. But if people want to fight him, they want to curse him, they want to ban him, He says okay. You can have your way, but the time will come that I'm going to close your store up. It's just a question of how soon before He says it's closing time. It's all over. And now, you're going to have to pay the price. Let's hope not, anytime soon. Let's hope God will still keep the door of salvation open, and those who are railing against him in Britain will say yes, we really realize that God loves us. Kristi. KRISTI WATTS: Pat, up next, his town was named America's fattest city, so this preacher set out to change that. You may recognize him from his role on reality TV, take a look. SET-UP PIECE RENELLE ROBERTS: Long before Huntington, West Virginia, was featured on the reality show, Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, pastor Steve Willis saw a growing problem among his congregation, and statistics backed it up. The Center for Disease Control named his town America's fattest. And he knew it was time to address the issue. Pastor Steve Willis: What we do with our bodies matters to God. How we treat our bodies matters to God. RENELLE ROBERTS: Under his leadership members of his church lost a ton of weight, literally, more than 2000 pounds in one year. And then Jamie Oliver's food revolution helped further transform the unhealthy city, a transformation that continued after the cameras stopped rolling. Now in his new book, Winning the Food Fight, Pastor Stephen inspires readers to begin their own journey towards spiritual wellness and physical health using a practical, biblical plan. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GUEST: STEVE WILLIS PAT ROBERTSON: Please welcome to The 700 Club, this amazing pastor who's written a book called, Winning the Food Fight. Pastor Steve Willis. Hey Steve, good to have you. Steve Willis: Nice meeting you Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Now, what's your town? STEVE WILLIS: Kenova, West Virginia, Huntington, West Virginia. PAT ROBERTSON: It is a suburb of Huntington. STEVE WILLIS: Right, right. PAT ROBERTSON: All right. And it was the fattest city in America? STEVE WILLIS: Yeah. The Center for Disease Control released a report that said that we were the most obese city in America. About 46 percent of our adults were obese. PAT ROBERTSON: So you hired this guy, Jamie Oliver; he came in and just tore everything to pieces. He is really insulted folks. STEVE WILLIS: You know, it was really a God thing. My wife and I prayed. We knew the problem we were having. We were trying to lose some weight already. And one night I told my wife we need someone to come in and teach us good nutrition. And the next day, Jamie Oliver's producers called and said, “We want to come to West Virginia and partner with you and make it a healthier city.” I mean it was just an answer to prayer. PAT ROBERTSON: An answer to prayer. STEVE WILLIS: So we didn't have to hire him, he came for free. I mean, that's the Lord. PAT ROBERTSON: We've got a clip of Jamie Oliver taking over that city and tearing things up. So let's take a look. STEVE WILLIS: When wintertime comes, every other week I've got a funeral. Let me tell you what, here’s our church directory. JAMIE OLIVER: Right. STEVE WILLIS: I can just go through here. This guy died an early death. I mean, I can go page after page, just had major surgery on his heart, passed away due to complications due to obesity. I mean, they're done before their time. I believe God has you guys here right now. This is what we've been praying for a year. This is a major problem in our community, man. And I just believe that God is opening up doors so we can see change, not only in Huntington, but all over the world. PAT ROBERTSON: Steve, people were dying every day or every week in your community or in congregation? STEVE WILLIS (Pastor / Author, Winning the Food Fight): When I went from doing youth ministry to adult ministry, I thought it would be easy, because all you have to do is preach one day a week. But I was just spending literally a third of my time driving back and forth to hospitals, doing hospital visits. And a lot of times it was diet related diseases. And that's when it hit me I've got to do something about this. Another aspect was just seeing it in my own child's life. You know, Pat, this is a moral issue when our kids can't learn the way that they need to learn, when we're not giving them the nutrition they need. I saw it in my own son's life how much his life changed when we changed the way he ate. PAT ROBERTSON: Give me an example. What were they eating? I mean this is West Virginia. I mean, mountains state, rugged America, and all that kind of stuff. STEVE WILLIS: You know, we eat those greasy, fried foods just like our grandparents ate, but we don't work like they worked. And you know, the foods that we eat now, as you well know, and I've heard you talk about it on the show, they're not as nutritious as they used to be. PAT ROBERTSON: That's right. STEVE WILLIS: And you know we've changed our food system. So we're really conditioning ourselves to be addicted to the foods that kill us. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, you had all those fast foods with all the greasy stuff? STEVE WILLIS: Yeah, we have more fast food and pizza chains than just about anybody. You know, it's not that a little bit of that once a while, will kill you. But it's a national statistic. It's not just in West Virginia. One out of three kids are eating fast foods every single day. Now Pat, that's a problem and that's something we need to address in the church. PAT ROBERTSON: Now McDonald's has something called a “Happy Meal,” and little kids say I want a happy meal. Well, happy meals full of that greasy stuff. STEVE WILLIS: Right and there's enough calories in that for an adult for a full dinner. So it doesn't really make us happy. I watched a commercial last night that said come buy your happiness here or find your happiness here. At a buffet and that's what we're teaching people is you can find happiness in food. And that's what the book is about food doesn't make you happy. We need to eat to live, not live to eat. PAT ROBERTSON: You stood up in front of your congregation, I mean, did they get mad at you? I mean, “Don't say I'm fat!” I mean don't like to be told they're fat. STEVE WILLIS: Well, our congregation was so gracious. We were concerned about that. Our leaders were concerned about that. One of our elder statesmen said do it with a feather not with a hammer. So I came at it very lightly. But at the end of the service when we talked about that, we had 60 people come forward and sign up, saying, you know what, you're exactly right. I know God would want me to take care of my body, so I can love Him with all my strength. And we started some programs and lives started changing. PAT ROBERTSON: And you lost a ton, how many? STEVE WILLIS: Yeah. It was a big celebration point when the people who had signed up, literally together as a congregation we lost a ton of weight. When we hit that 2-000 pound mark that was a great time. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, how about you personally? STEVE WILLIS: Personally, that's what started the whole thing. I was walking up a mountainside in California and just realized I was out of breath and out of shape. A friend of mine was making fun of me because of the spare tire around my belly. And I had been a fairly athletic person. But it just gets away from you so quickly. And you don't notice it. So yeah, I myself lost 20 pounds in the process. PAT ROBERTSON: Did you have stuff at the church like nutritious salads and greens and vegetables and fruits and things like that? STEVE WILLIS: We always have Wednesday evening potluck dinners; and, unfortunately, those can be the most unhealthy meals that you can have as a church. And so we just started changing the way we think about food and the way we relate to food. And our Wednesday evening cooks started making healthy meals. And we had fantastic meal last Wednesday night. And it was just healthy and the calorie count was low. But everybody loved it. And when the evening was over, I said hey here's how many calories were in this meal. And people were like you've got to be kidding me. But you can cook good food, and it can be healthy. PAT ROBERTSON: My weight started getting out of control when I was assistant pastor in a Baptist church, and we had Wednesday night suppers. And what do you have? You have a hunk of beef or pork or something and then you have gravy and you have white potatoes, and you have rolls with white bread and then you have a slab of apple pie. And you're hungry, because none of that stuff satisfies. STEVE WILLIS: That’s right. And your body is saying I need nutrition, I need nutrition. And when we don't eat nutritious foods, so then you're hungry again two hours later. And that's part of what the books about. I'm excited about it. We're starting our own Food Fight boot camps . . . . PAT ROBERTSON: Really? STEVE WILLIS: . . . . where People would take 60 days, and it's kind of like the TV programs, except we add the spiritual element. And whenever you separate the Gospel from any social cause, there's always recidivism rate; people are going to go back to the same old habits if you don't address the spiritual habits. We set up a web site WinningFoodFight.com, and it gives people tips and it educates them about food and the way we relate to food. We're excited about that. A lot of great things are happening. PAT ROBERTSON: That is wonderful. Well, you know the thing of it is that Christians are not supposed to smoke, not supposed to drink, not supposed to dance, not supposed to gamble, but they can gorge themselves. GRAPHIC: LOG ON TO CBN.COM STEVE WILLIS: And, Pat, here's one of the things, I was doing an interview with Entertainment Tonight, and one of the guys went to a college where the leader of the college was really over weight. And he said it was a stumbling block to him when the gentleman would talk about how we need to have self control, don't drink, don't smoke. But yet he clearly had problem with gluttony. And that's the thing of the Church, we'll talk about all of the other seven deadly sins, but we don't talk about gluttony. But you do hear it on The 700 Club, and I appreciate the ministry you have here. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I appreciate you. Well, folks this book is called Winning the Food Fight. And they won, I mean, they won so much they've been on national television. What a change! By the way, Steve, has this changed your city, or just your church? STEVE WILLLIS: No, the city's changing, we just had a big celebration this past weekend. We teamed with a group called Ebenezer Medical Outreach. We’ve got a kitchen right downtown, right by the main restaurant area where we give free cooking lessons to people who need them. We've got thousands of people go through that. We partnered and this is the good thing in the church, when you get involved in a with social issue and you bring God's grace to that issue, people recognize, hey, this is what churches need to be doing. We partner that with the Gospel, we're really seeing the city of Huntington change. I'm looking forward to seeing some CDC reports in the future, because our momentum is slowing down, and we're getting healthier. PAT ROBERTSON: What is your denomination, by the way? STEVE WILLIS: I'm Baptist. PAT ROBERTHSON: You're a Baptist. STEVE WILLIS: That's right. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, okay. STEVE WILLIS: Amen. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, all those Baptist stop all those greasy, Wednesday night suppers. I know what it's like; it can ruin you. Well, Steve God bless. Where can they get it? Amazon? STEVE WILLIS: Amazon, Christian books, Barnes and Nobles, it's all over the nation. Again, it’s on our website, WinningFoodFight.com. PAT ROBERTSON: It's a fun thing, you've got to get the book and read about how this church changed itself and changed the city. Steve Willis, God bless you. Thank you so much. STEVE WILLIS: Thank you, so much. God bless you. PAT ROBERTSON: Well Christie, you don't need this you're so svelte. KRISTI WATTS: Praise God, cause I'm sucking it in, and I'm not lying. Well still ahead a self confessed racist with a big ax to grind. Woman: My decision making, my opinions, my attitudes they were rooted in who I was as a black woman. I don't really like white people. I don't like what they did. KRISTI WATTS: But see how a prayer and a friend completely transformed this woman. The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld an injunction against the amendment until a legal challenge can be heard. Kim Cash Tate: I've formulated feelings of, you know, I just don't really like white people. I don't like really like what they did. And if they could get away with it, they'd probably do it again. There was prejudice there, definitely. Mia Evans-Saracual: Kim Cash Tate was born during the height of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR: I have a dream. TV Reporter: Rosa parks was told to move to the back of a city bus and give her seat . . . . Mia Evans-Saracual: Of everything she witnessed, the television mini series Roots had the most profound effect on her views about race. Kim Cash Tate: That affected me deeply, to be able to see the history of oppression and racism live and in color on that television set. It was one thing to hear about it, to read about it, but to see it depicted on television. Mia Evans-Saracual: What exactly did you internalize after watching that TV series? Kim Cash Tate: To see Kunta Kinte being whipped, that's when I really got a strong sense of, okay, it's us and them. And we are the ones who are oppressed. We're the ones who are looked upon as inferior, and they're the ones with the advantages, and they don't really like us. My decision-making, my opinions, my attitudes, they were all rooted in who I was as a black woman. I know I have to work twice as hard, because they will prefer their own. Mia Evans-Saracual: Kim did work hard and earned her law degree from George Washington University. She lived in Prince George's County, a suburb of Washington, DC, known as the wealthiest African-American community in the nation. Kim thrived on being a successful black woman. Then her husband Bill received a great job offer, and the couple moved to the Midwest, a move that changed the course of Kim's life. Kim Cash Tate: I hated Madison, Wisconsin. I went there kicking and screaming. I had never been in a place that was that white. All the things that I was used to, all the diversity, and the familiarity, not there. Mia Evans-Saracual: Kim had trouble making friends and desperately wanted to move back home. She turned to God for help. Kim Cash Tate: I didn't even realize how empty I had been feeling. I thought it was just because I was in Madison, instead of DC. I felt like there was this big hole, this void, that I had been walking around with, and there was something there that I needed so desperately, and I didn't have it. I didn't know God, but I knew of God from the Catholic schools I went to as a child. So I knew He could do miracles, and I said if God can do miracles, He can get me out of Madison. Mia Evans-Saracual: One Sunday Kim and her husband decided to go to church. She was moved by the preacher's words. Kim Cash Tate: I knew about Jesus. I knew and really in my head thought that He was the son of God. I didn't know I could have a relationship with Him. By the end of that sermon, I was just in tears. You just know that something has changed. I'm not going to leave this place the same way I came in. Mia Evans-Saracual: That day Kim gave her life to Jesus Christ. Kim Cash Tate: I just had a hunger now to know the Lord, to know what is this Bible about. I had never read the Bible. Mia Evans-Saracual: She joined a woman's Bible study where a white woman named Bridget tried to befriend her. Kim Cash Tate: We would have a great time. We would share testimonies. We would pray together, but that was it. I didn't really contact her outside of that. At the same time, I'm praying to have a friend in Madison, and this black woman joined our church, and I started making a beeline to her after church, calling her up, invited her to dinner. I said as my testimony for the week, I'm so thankful that God gave me a friend in Madison finally. Mia Evans-Saracual: Kim says she was approached by the Bible study leader who saw her overlooking the white woman who tried to be her friend. Kim Cash Tate: I didn't even realize I was doing that. To have hurt Bridget that way, and God was showing me my heart which was grievous to me. I was in tears at night as God just really pierced my heart with that. I started looking up Scriptures and writing them down, and about the fact that we are one in Christ, and that there is unity in the body. It was definitely a process of studying, of praying, a growing with Bridget, because we were still going to the Bible study every Wednesday. She was able to love me regardless and understand where I was, and then we were able to grow together in friendship. Mia Evans-Saracual: How do you balance where you are now, seeing life through the perspective of Jesus, and accepting who you are as a black woman. Kim Cash Tate: I love the color of my skin. I love my culture still. It's just that I have a proper perspective now, that I don't live, move, and have my being in it. I live, move, and have my being in Christ. I know now after studying the Word of God, after getting to know who the Lord is, that I'm far from inferior. In Christ, all things are possible. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * KRISTI MINISTER SALVATION KRISTI WATTS: You know, it's interesting, I was watching that story, and I was thinking, there may be some of you who say, “I can't relate to that.” But you know, the real story is that we all relate to her. We all do. Even as Christians, I think if we're honest with ourselves, we all have maybe that one hang-up about a certain person who's offended us, or a race who has offended us, or an ethnic group, or religion, or a community, that has offended us. And because of that there is an area in our heart, where we are hardened towards them. But you see, the Bible says, God says, that he does not look at the outward appearance, but that he looks at the heart. Why does God look at the heart? Because the heart is literally a treasure box of who we are. The heart reveals what our motives are. The heart reveals why we behave the way that we behave. Why we do what we do. Why we think the way that we think. But see the heart is what God wants to envelop. That's the place that God wants to come into. Listen, they are a lot of us who think that because we are Christians, once you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and all of a sudden we will see the world with rose colored glasses, and we'll love everybody, and everybody will be nice to us, and accept us and receive us. But really, that's not the case. Think about it, if people persecuted Jesus, don't you think they're going to persecute us, and if that is the case, isn't it easy for us as Christians to sometimes want to defend ourselves, and hate people, and pushed them aside. It's easy to do that, but that's not the heart of God. The heart of God is to love. It is to forgive. It is to embrace, and to walk in a place of hope. And that same heart that God has is the same heart that God wants us to have. All right, so you're saying, “okay Kristi, that sounds really good, but how do I do it?” I did it. I understand that question. You know how you do it? You humbly go before the Lord and you say, “Lord, I have an issue with this person. I have an issue with this race. I have an issue with this religion, this community, this town, this whatever it is, fill in the blank.” You come humbly before the Lord in a place of truth, and honesty, and sincerity, and you say Lord, here's my issue, I give it to you. I'm so sorry. Will you take it, and will you change it? And will you transform my heart, and will you teach me and show me how to love those who may be it's hard to love.” God can do that for you right now. In fact, let's together you and I, let's just pray. Let's pray together because you know, the word of God says that when two or more come together agreeing on anything, it's going to be done. So if you bow your head, and closure eyes right now and pray with me, that thing you're praying for, it's going to be done, because that really is a promise of the Lord. So let's pray right now for the Lord to transform your heart, and remove that hate or issue that's been in there for so long. “Lord Jesus, we just love you. We thank you so much for transforming power of your love. Father that area that's in our hearts, whether it's racism or hate or just a resentment toward a particular person or group of people, Father, we lay that at the altar. We come to you in a place of humility and Lord we repent. Lord we are so sorry for judging people and hating people and treating them unjustly. Father, forgive us. Now Lord, will you give us a new heart? Will you transform us? Renew our minds. We knew our spirits, and even the words that we speak, let the words of our mouth, and the meditations of our heart be pleasing unto you. Lord. You are an amazing God. So Lord, come into our heart and make us new. Transform us. I thank you, Lord, for what you're doing and what you continue to do, in Jesus’ name, amen.” You see, it's as simple as in ask, because God loves you so much, He wants to do that very thing that you've asked for. It's your segment. This is your opportunity to log on to CBN.com and ask Pat whatever you want. That's what Karen did, in fact this is what she said. She says, “Is it okay to use subliminal messages in CDs or videos to change your mindset in order to achieve goals like losing weight or making money?” What do you think, Pat? PAT ROBERTSON: I don't see anything wrong with it. I really don't. If you can gain yourself through some message that's hidden, but you've got to be careful. Some of the stuff that's on those CDs, you play them backwards, there are some really bad things in there that have been hidden. But if something says, “Don't eat, don't eat, don't eat.” KRISTI WATTS: Right? Then maybe you shouldn’t eat. All right. Next one. Kathy writes, “If a spouse has viewed porn several times, and then lied about why he did it, is it the same as adultery, and does it warrant divorce?” PAT ROBERTSON: Of course not. No it doesn't. Openness in a marriage is a very important thing, but it's like a child, if you want to teach a child to lie, keep hammering away, why did you do that? Why did you go here? Why did you go there? They'll lie to you every time. So, that's not the way to treat a child. It's not the way to treat a spouse. Give them an opportunity. “I love you. So you've been watching porn. I'll forgive you, you've been watching porn. Don't lie to me, just tell me the truth.” But no, it's not the same thing as adultery. Okay. KRISTI WATTS: Sheila writes, “I just had a baby, and I'm battling with fear over everything. Reading the Bible and prayer doesn't seem to help all the time. Is there anything else that can help me in this battle?” PAT ROBERTSON: There is such a thing as postpartum depression, and after having a baby is a tremendous shock to a woman's system, and rather than try look for all kinds of answers, I would build yourself up with the standard stuff. You need vitamins. You need nutrients. You need exercise. You need fresh air. You need plenty of sleep, and don't stress yourself, and before long this thing will get better. It's a condition, that's a tremendous shock to a woman's body, to give birth to a child. And postpartum depression is something that, you know, that one woman down in Texas, she was dressed out of her mind, and she ended up killing her children, and it's because of that. So I just say, kind of get it together. Rest and realize that you'll come out of it physically if you give your body the chance to recover. KRISTI WATTS: Okay, I'm going to jump in on this one, ready? All right. She was talking about having fear when she had a baby, and it's interesting, because when I first had my son, there's something about a mother, you become so protective. You don't want anybody to hurt, or to harm, and you just get kind of really freaked out. I did the same thing, but you know what I did? I said, “Lord, I'm freaked out. I'm scared, but you told me to trust you. And even though I love this child, I know you love this child even more than I do, which tells me, that you're going to place a hedge of protection over this child. That you are going to command your Angels over this child, and that you were going to give me the wisdom on how to rear this child.” When I thought about each of those promises from the Lord, then that fear subsided. And you do the same thing. PAT ROBERTSON: That’s great. Well, was she talking about here before having a child, or afterward? KRISTI WATTS: She was saying that she just had a baby and was scared. PAT ROBERTSON: It was afterwards. KRISTI WATTS: Yeah. PAT ROBERTSON: Yours was before? KRISTI WATTS: No, mine was as soon as I had this baby, holding his baby in my hands. PAT ROBERTSON: Oh I thought it was before she was born. Okay, well, good word. KRISTI WATTS: Next question. Michelle writes, “Sometimes when I pray, negative thoughts, unkind thoughts pop into my head. Are these from the devil? I don't want to thank them, especially during prayer. What can I do to stop them? PAT ROBERTSON: I think, just focus on Jesus. Get your mind on Jesus, and let the Bible come to you. Recite the Scripture, over and over again, you know, over and over again. Get something about the glory of the Lord, and say it over, and over, and over again. Well folks, I think that's all the time. Thank you for your questions. Tomorrow, what is this? KRISTI WATTS: 49ers. Patrick Willis. PAT ROBERTSON: Is that it? I'm not familiar with him. KRISTI WATTS: I'm not either, but he's a leader of San Francisco's top ranked defense. PAT ROBERTSON: We’ve had another Willis earlier, and now we have a second one. KRISTI WATTS: I know. PAT ROBERTSON: And today, we leave you with these words from 1st Corinthians . . . . GRAPHIC: 1 Corinthians 10:31 “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (NIV) . . . . “So whether we eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Thanks so much, we'll see you tomorrow.
