Man: I saw these guys doing tricks and flips. LEE WEBB: A skier about to go pro . . . . Man: I learned this new trick the week earlier. LEE WEBB: . . . . crashes and burns. Man: Unfortunately I went a little too fast, and I overshot the landing. LEE WEBB: What got him back on the slopes. Plus, married to the mob. Woman: They just went whoosh, right over my head. LEE WEBB: One mobster's wife becomes part of the family and changes the Mafia forever. * * * PAT ROBERTSON: Well, welcome to The 700 Club, and there’s sadness in Mudville today. You know why? TERRY MEEUWSEN: I'm not sure. PAT ROBERTSON: The Hostess company went bankrupt, the maker of Twinkies. TERRY MEEUWSEN: And I know you “wept” over that. PAT ROBERTSON: Oh, it was terrible! I have not eaten a Twinkie, I think, in my whole life. But nevertheless I'm sure that Twinkie eaters are stoking up. They say they won't keep more than several weeks, four weeks max. TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is the second time, right? PAT ROBERTSON: I don't know whether that company has gone in, but anyhow, whoo! TERRY MEEUWSEN: Interesting. PAT ROBERTSON: All right, I just thought I'd put that out there to get things going. TERRY MEEUWSEN: So the rest of you could mourn as well. PAT ROBERTSON: That’s it. You can mourn along with it. Well, this man is considered a top religious authority for Muslims around the world. His rulings call for the killing of American troops in Iraq, and the destruction of Israel. TERRY MEEUWSEN: And that's not all. What's even more frightening is that his influence reaches far beyond the Middle East. Erick Stakelbeck takes a look at the Muslim Brotherhood’s spiritual leader. SHEIKH AL AL-QARADAWI ERICK STAKELBECK: Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi has been called the most influential Islamic cleric in the world. Over the past year, he has used his clout to promote the so-called Arab spring. For Qaradawi the rise of radical Islamic governments across the Middle East and North Africa means a giant step towards his vision of a united Islamic super state, or caliphate governed by Sharia law. The 86-year-old Egyptian native pushes his agenda through his website, Islam online, and his top-rated Al Jazeera program, called Sharia and Life, which reaches tens of millions of Muslims each week. Walid Phares (Middle East Expert): Yousef al-Qaradawi is more than just an ideologue. He is also a strategist. ERICK STAKELBECK: Walid Phares is the author of, The Coming Revolution. He says Qaradawi sets the tone for the Muslim Brotherhood worldwide. Walid Phares: We are talking about a Lenin here, a jihadist Lenin who controls the flow of the ideology but also gives the nod with regard to general strategic direction. He's the mentor today of the Muslim Brotherhood, and the MBs are about to take over in at least three to four countries in the Middle East. ERICK STAKELBECK: Just one week after protests forced Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak out of power, Qaradawi returned to his homeland following a 30-year exile. He led Friday prayers for a crowd of over one million in Cairo's Tahrir square where he called for Muslims to reconquer Jerusalem. Phares compared it to the Ayatollah Khomeini’s return to Iran in 1979. Walid Phares: Qaradawi came to Egypt to change the Arab spring into a caliphate spring. ERICK STAKELBECK: Qaradawi’s fatwa’s, or religious rulings, have endorsed the killing of US troops in Iraq and suicide bombings against Israeli civilians. He is shown a special animosity towards Jews, and not just those living in Israel. During a 2009 sermon, he raged . . . . GRAPHIC: JIHAD ON JEWS “OH ALLAH, TAKE THIS OPPRESSIVE JEWISH, ZIONIST BAND OF PEOPLE...DO NOT SPARE A SINGLE ONE OF THEM...COUNT THEIR NUMBERS, AND KILL THEM, DOWN TO THE VERY LAST ONE.” -YUSUF AL QARADAWI SOURCE: MEMRI.ORG . . . . “Oh, Allah, take this oppressive, Jewish, Zionist band of people...Do not spare a single one of them...Count their numbers, and kill them, down to the very last one.” Cynthia Farhat: Genocide? That's the main message. Genocide. ERICK STAKELBECK: Egyptian dissident, Cynthia Farhat told CBN news, that Westerners who call Qaradawi “moderate,” ignore his words. Cynthia Farhat (Center for Security Policy): He went as far as saying that he wants to kill Jews with his own hands, with his own bare hands, while sitting on his wheelchair. ERICK STAKELBECK: Yet, according to a recent report in one of India's largest daily newspapers, the Obama Administration is using Qaradawi as a mediator in secret negotiations between the US and the Taliban. An Obama Administration official told CBN news the report is not accurate. The administration has acknowledged, however, that it is engaged in dialogue with the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist parties. (In studio): And Qaradawi has ambitions beyond the Middle East. He says Islam will conquer America and Europe as well, not overnight, but gradually through immigration and conversion, Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Erick, is the White House blind, deaf, dumb, blind? What is it? They are in contact with this man and some of his people. ERICK STAKELBECK: You know, Pat, they deny it. They denied this report. First of all, I wish I was a fly on the wall in the Middle East meetings at this White House to get inside their heads and see what exactly they’re thinking. They deny this report, Pat. But two things here. Number one, it appeared in one of the largest daily newspapers in India, a very credible source, The Hindu—they use Indian intelligence sources many times—is a very detailed report saying yes, the US is using Qaradawi as a mediator in talks with the Taliban. Number two, Pat, another interesting point here. The Taliban is apparently opening an office in Qatar. Now Qaradawi lives in Qatar. Very interesting. And the third thing, Pat, is look, the Obama Administration is engaged in dialogue with top Muslim brotherhood leaders throughout the Middle East and North Africa. So, if you're in their shoes, why not talk to Qaradawi. After all, he is the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, you know and I know, that the Muslim Brotherhood is intent on establishing a caliphate, putting Sharia law into effect, and of course obliterating Israel. And yet, the administration, think Hillary Clinton, and the president, and others, have indicated they are a group of moderates. Where do they get off with that? ERICK STAKELBECK: Well, Pat, great point, as we speak, the number-two man, the number-two highest ranking official at the State Department is in Egypt, and yesterday he met with leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood. Now, Pat, we have Muslim Brotherhood documents. You and I have discussed this on CBN News. We have Brotherhood documents that our own FBI uncovered just 10 minutes from where I'm sitting right now, outside of Washington, DC. In these documents it says clearly that the Muslim Brotherhood’s goal is world Islamic domination, and that they want to destroy the United States from within. This is their own words, Pat. Now, our government officials have these documents in their possessions. They know the Brotherhood's game. I don't know, Pat. Call me old-fashioned, but when someone says they want to destroy my civilization, I take them at their word. Apparently this White House does not. PAT ROBERTSON: Is it stupidity or is somebody deliberately trying to throw the game? ERICK STAKELBECK: It’s tough to say, Pat. Honestly, this administration has been so pro-Islamist, so anti-Israel, that you wonder what the thought process is. One thing that I have heard is that they believe that the Brotherhood has changed its spots. That they are now moderate. But they no longer support violence, and they actually believe they can use the Brotherhood, who are the so-called “moderate” Islamists, Pat, as a counterweight to Al Qaeda and the really bad guys. But, if you look at the Muslim Brotherhood's words, they're still calling for the destruction of Israel. They're talking about breaking the peace treaty with Israel. They will never have dialogue with Israel. And they're supporting the reestablishment, top Muslim Brotherhood leaders, Pat. In fact the Muslim Brotherhood's very top guy, not only Qaradawi who we are talking about, but another top Brotherhood leader just last week said, yes, we are very close to the return to her ultimate goal, the Islamic caliphate. The Islamic super state would stretch all across North Africa and Middle East, a union of all Islamic countries, militarily, politically, economically, to take on Israel and the West. They believe the wind is at their backs, Pat, and they're very close; and this White House, frankly, is not helping much. PAT ROBERTSON: Erick, I appreciate the work you are doing. You're bringing stories that you just don't hear on the news. You're hearing it on our news, ladies and gentlemen, because we bring it to you. He wrote a book that's been very popular called, The Terrorist Next Door. It's still available on Amazon and places where books are sold. It's Erick's book. Some shocking things, but factual. He gets his facts right. Well, you can get latest updates on terrorism by going to Erick's blog, Stakelbeck on Terror, on CBNNews.com. GRAPHIC: GO TO CBN.COM Well, Lee Webb has the rest of our top stories from the CBN newsroom. Lee. MINISTERIAL EXCEPTION LEE WEBB: Pat, the US Supreme Court has ruled that the government has no right to tell a religious organization what ministerial employees it can hire or fire. The case involved Cheryl Peters, the teacher fired by a Michigan church school. She sued claiming discrimination. But the justices backed up what's known as the “ministerial exemption,” which protects religious employers. In her decision was unanimous. Douglas Laycock represented the church. Douglas Laycock (Church’s Attorney): Disputes between ministers and their churches, if there's anything that's covered by separation of church and state, this is it. These cases do not belong in the civil courts. GRAPHIC: U.S. SUPREME COURT ON MINISTERIAL EXEMPTION “THE CHURCH MUST BE FREE TO CHOOSE THOSE WHO GUIDE IT ON IT’S WAY.” -JUSTICE JOHN ROBERTS LEE WEBB: In the ruling, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote, “The Church must be free to choose those who guide it on its way.” But Justice Roberts added that employees might be able to bring other types of lawsuits against religious employers. S. CAROLINA SHOWDOWN LEE WEBB: Mitt Romney is feeling the heat in South Carolina. After a big win in the New Hampshire primary, he's fighting off attacks portraying him as an elitist. Mark Martin has that story. MARK MARTIN: With the narrow victory in Iowa, and a sizable one in New Hampshire, Mitt Romney is in South Carolina with a lot of momentum. He wasted no time in speaking out against President Obama. Mitt Romney (R-Presidential Candidate): I think you have to say this has been a failed presidency. MARK MARTIN: And the former Massachusetts governor’s Republican competitors are wasting no time in bringing up controversial issues surrounding the GOP front runner. Texas Gov. Rick Perry had harsh words for the management firm Romney used to lead. Rick Perry (R-Presidential Candidate): Companies like Bain Capital could've come in and help these companies if they truly were venture capitalists. But they're not. They're vulture capitalists. MARK MARTIN: The other candidates, Ron Paul, Rick Santorum, Jon Huntsman, and Newt Gingrich, are also working hard to slow down Romney. GRAPHIC: POLITICAL AD Announcer: Romney signed mandated healthcare with taxpayer-funded abortions. MARK MARTIN: A super Pac, supporting Gingrich is spending nearly 3-1/2 million dollars on ads, and a documentary painting Romney as a rich elitist who buys up companies and lays off workers. Romney says, that's playing into President Obama's hands. Mitt Romney: We've understood for a long time that the Obama people would come after free enterprise. A little surprised to see Newt Gingrich as the first witness for the prosecution. MARK MARTIN: The former Speaker says Romney needs to address the eyebrow- raising issues head on. Newt Gingrich (R-Presidential Candidate): If they think they could get through the general election with Obama and Axelrod and not have to be capable of answering tough questions, that's a formula for guaranteed defeat this fall. MARK MARTIN: The South Carolina primary is January 21st, but the GOP hopefuls also have their eyes on Florida at the end of the month. At least 424,000 Republican absentee ballots have been mailed, and some 84,000 have already been returned. Mark Martin, CBN News. LEE WEBB: You know, Pat, for Gingrich at least, and maybe even Rick Perry, this fight against Romney seems to be personal. And if that's the case, you wonder how long they're going to stay in to try to bring him down. PAT ROBERTSON: You have to ask yourself what is their gain? What are they trying to do? I mean, they should be trying to win the nomination. But this campaign of hate and vilification isn't going to win than anything. It's not really going to hurt Romney. Romney is going to go ahead and do what he does, because he's got the overwhelming financial support, and support more, and more, and more, out of the so-called mainstream Republican Party. What are they doing? Newt was positioned, he could have come in and run a substantial close second; he might even have won South Carolina, if he'd done it on a positive basis. But if he's playing this negative card, it's not going to work. Lee, the whole idea about Bain Capital, it's very successful. I understand from an article yesterday, I think they have assets of something like $266 billion. They have investments from all kinds of nonprofits, university endowments, hospitals, and charities, and things like that, that invest with Bain. Bain has done a tremendous job. Staples is the number one show that they took a little company, and builds it up into a monster. I think that's true. But in truth, if you take a sick company, there's times you have to shut them down. There's nothing else you can do. And yes, that means people will lose their jobs, but that's just capitalism. Schumpeter called it “creative destruction.” You just can't leave the walking wounded around all day long. There has a time where you have to say okay guys, we put all the money into you were going to, and we have to shut you down. Well, any good VC, any good venture capitalist, will do that. That isn't vulture. That's just the way the game is played, and I'm shocked at Rick Perry. He knows better. Lee. PATRICK WILLIS LEE WEBB: Pat, after a ten-year drought, the San Francisco 49ers finally had a winning season and made it to the playoffs. Much of their success this season is thanks to a top-ranked defense led by linebacker Patrick Willis. But he doesn't buy into the hype. Here's sports reporter Shawn Brown. SHAWN BROWN: San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis is one of the most dominant defensive players in the NFL. When teams call a play, he's the guy they tried to avoid. As the Niners advance to the playoffs for the first time in a decade, Patrick says, he's not letting it go to his head. Patrick Willis: I still respect those who played the game before me, and I also know that I didn't get here by myself. I didn't do it on my own. I feel like this is a good Lord who put me here, there's a good Lord who blessed me to be able to do what I do. I don’t want to go and brag, and say oh yeah, it's me, Oh, look at me here I am now. Because just as He blessed you today, it could be gone tomorrow. SHAWN BROWN: Patrick's grandmother was a big influence on his life. And from her he learned about having a relationship with Jesus Christ. Patrick Willis: My grandmother, she always just told us about faith, and always put us in a church. I'll never forget it, my uncle, was a professional boxer. He would always tell me to, he would always be like, Patrick, he'd say, “No matter what you do,” and this was when I was young, he was say, “No matter what you do in life, no matter how good you do in sports,” he said, “always remember to give God all the praise, glory, and honor.” SHAWN BROWN: When Patrick joined the 49ers five seasons ago, they were losing team. But he never doubted that's where God wanted him to play. He remembers the prayer he prayed just before the draft. Patrick Willis: I said Lord, “I don't know where I'm going to go. I've done everything I could possibly do to put myself in the best situation. Where ever you blessed me to go, that's where I'm going to go, and that's where I'm going to make a home, and give everything I've got. I'm going to play the best football I can possibly play.” I said, “So whatever happens on this day is in your will.” SHAWN BROWN: The 49ers face their first playoff game this weekend. Patrick says, no matter what the outcome, his number one priority is to glorify God. Patrick Willis: I'll just go out there, and I always pray, I say, “Lord, I don't know what today's game is going to be like, but I just pray that you bless me and go off here and play for you. Be a soldier for it. If you want me to go out and lead this team the way you want me to lead it.” So each time I play, I don't want to go out there and say, tell the people, I’m playing for the Lord today. I just wanted to see and know what a good, good bad, that definitely playing for the Lord, and that's why I'm able to be like, “Today wasn't a good day, but thank you for blessing me to be able to play this game. Although this game wasn't I was hoping I would have, I'm just blessed to still be playing this game.” LEE WEBB: He’s a terrific player, too, Pat. Tim Tebow is getting a lot of attention, and deservedly so, but it's so encouraging to see so many players in the National Football League who love God and want to play for Him as well. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, the 49ers are coming up against Drew Brees and the Saints, and I think despite Patrick Willis, I think the 49ers are going to be struggling against Brees. He is so good. But here again, here's somebody who loves God. It's wonderful to see these as you point out, these professional athletes at the top of their game, and covered with adulation from fans saying, “I give the glory to God Almighty.” Terry. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Here, here. Well, coming up, how the nation of Haiti is recovering two years after it’s devastating earthquake. LEE WEBB: On tomorrow's 700 Club. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: Well, it was one of the world's greatest tragedies. Two years ago a deadly earthquake shook the nation of Haiti. Killed more than 300,000 people. Left more than a million homeless. It's not over yet. They haven't cleaned it all up, and survivors are still trying to recover from the massive tragedy. We understand from one story, I'm trying to think of the name that you would call them, but the independent organizations that are trying to do help, have run out of money, and has Efrem Graham reports, CBN's Operation Blessing is still working hard to help them restore their nation. FOCUS: OB HAITI EFREM GRAHAM: As signs of Haiti's earthquake slowly disappear, the Haitian people grow stronger, thanks to organizations like Operation Blessing David Darg (Operation Blessing International): The last two years have been just flat out. We have been working non-stop on relief projects and development projects, saving lives after the earthquake. I mean we have lost count of how many lives we have saved from the doctors we've brought in. EFREM GRAHAM: That includes bringing medical teams from the Mayo Clinic each month, administering anti-parasite medication every day and tackling the countries water crisis. David Darg: With the introduction of cholera in 2010, it became a crisis. Still today, Haiti is the world's largest cholera epidemic. So clean water is essential. It is probably the biggest need for the nation right now. EFREM GRAHAM: While water is an immediate need, Operation Blessing is also focused On the future. Workers have recently built a school here in this small village. David Darg: In a very remote village. It is one of the poorest villages that we've found in Haiti. So you have the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, the poorest village in that country lets say, it's just extreme poverty and need and Operation Blessing is moving beyond providing relief items. EFREM GRAHAM: The look on these kids faces when it comes to getting an education and being taught, I mean, there is no comparison anywhere I’ve seen, in terms of the excitement of being there. David Darg: Absolutely. When we first went to this village, it was very different story to what it is now. Extreme malnutrition. A lot of the children weren't even wearing clothes. I mean, it was just about as bad as you could get. And so to see now where they have come, just in the few years that we have been working there. It's amazing for us to see and of course, wonderful for all of them. EFREM GRAHAM: It is just one example of the community development projects Operation Blessing is working on throughout the country. Another, is these little guys that make the organizations aqua-culture project. David Darg: The tilapia that we are growing are a very resilient fish. Tilapia come from the Middle East. Some people say that they’re the loaves and fishes; it's the Biblical fish. And so it's a strong fish. It is very fast growing. It's perfect for Haiti. It's perfect for the Haitian environment, and so that is the fish of choice. EFREM GRAHAM: These 150-feet long, and 40-feet wide aqua cells are growing even more tilapia these days. But more importantly, they're producing much-needed jobs. David Darg: In the city of Port au Prince, we have aqua cells, which is essentially large fish ponds which have very high densities of tilapia fish in them, so we are growing high volumes, 25,000 fish in one of these aqua cells. And so that is one model of aqua-culture that we’re using as an example to show what's possible in Haiti. They need to see where they can be at, so we’re creating the aqua-cell project as model of development for Haitians, for the Haitian government, to see what is possible in the country. EFREM GRAHAM: Looking to the future, Operation Blessing is still in Haiti. Lots of organizations have left in those two years. Does that now increase the burden on Operation Blessing? David Darg: As different organizations pull out, it certainly increases the burden on the organizations that remain in Haiti. There is always work to do there. So the burden is tough anyway. EFREM GRAHAM (Croix Described Bouquets): The burden led to a partnership to build orphans a home in Croix-des-Bouquets. It's called Zanmi Beni. Zanmi Beni is Creole for "blessed friends, “ and this home is indeed a blessing for little guys like this one here, and some at 49 other children. And believe it or not, this facility started with just one building. David Darg: Orphanages are being shut down, because the conditions are terrible. And then there are more orphans in circulation. We are now being asked to absorb some of those children into our facility, just as an example. As money dries up for different organizations and they leave different areas, there are still needs that aren't being met. And so Operation Blessing is perfectly positioned to be able to respond to emergency needs and the development needs, the infrastructure development that is so essential to the nation. And so we are just calling on our supporters to back us to enable Operation Blessing to be a lasting impact in Haiti. EFREM GRAHAM: Efrem Graham, CBN News. PAT ROBERTSON: Thanks, Efrem. Incredible, Bill Horan the head of Operation Blessing, and I guess I'm chairman of it. But in any event, I'm very pleased with the work that Operation Blessing has done in Haiti, and they're making a lasting impact on the country. Bill Horan is very interested in fish and this aqua-culture project. It's just dramatic. These tilapia, they're good eating fish, and they just breed like crazy, so they’ve got all kinds of fish down there they can put on the market, so these people who have some protein in their diet. It's very wonderful. And folks by the way, if you want to participate, you might just send something on this one to Operation Blessing Haiti. GRAPHIC: 1-800-759-0700 CBN.COM You could say, “This is for Haiti. I have a burden for Haiti.” We've been able to give away through Operation Blessing, at least I don't want to overstate it, but it's a least $250 million, maybe more, to help all kinds of people do all kinds of things. GRAPHIC: OB DISASTER RELIEF FUND 1-800-759-0700 CBN.COM Operation Blessing just doesn't go into countries and get a few sound bites and some film clips and go away. It stays, and it stays and puts down some roots and does something good. Signs of the Times, we’ll give you this as our gift to you if you join the 700 Club, or if you make a gift to this Haiti project. Operation Blessing, Terry. They had something called “Growing up Gotti,” and a seemingly there is an incredible interest in people that are in what are called “organized crime,” or the Mob. Well Fortune magazine, called Michael Franzese one of the top 50 mob bosses. Life magazine called him quote, “Mob’s young genius.” But the woman you're about to meet new that mafioso in a much different way: as her husband. GUEST SET UP RENELLE ROBERTS: Cammy Franzese married into the Mafia without even knowing it. Camille Franzese: There were a few little innuendos, but they just flew, whoosh, right over my head. RENELLE ROBERTS: Her husband, Michael, was a member of the New York City crime family. He reportedly set up brilliant financial scams that netted him millions of dollars. After they were married, Michael went to jail for his crimes, twice. In her book, This Thing of Ours, Cammy shares how she unknowingly changed the face of organized crime in America and the key role she played in Michael's decision to walk away from his life of crime. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GUEST: CAMILLE FRANZESE PAT ROBERTSON: Well, you know, the La Cosa Nostra is our thing, and The Thing of Ours is what Cammy's book is. It's a pleasure to welcome the wife of a former mob boss, Cammy Franzese. Cammy, good to have you with us. Cammy Franzese: Thank you Pat, my pleasure. PAT ROBERTSON: Hey, listen. You married Michael. He's a good looking, attractive guy, and did you know about all that mob connection when you married him? Cammy Franzese (Author, This Thing of Ours): Oh no. Gosh, Pat, no. No, I had no idea. I didn't find out much about Michael's life until we well married and had a few children, and he was writing his first book. I stumbled upon a couple of the notes in our home and read a few things that frightened me. And then that was it. I sort of turned a blind eye and didn't want to read anymore. PAT ROBERTSON: You know, you think about monsters, a big jolly Italian, with a cigar, and eating pasta with a big glass of wine. Michael doesn't fit that picture. He's good-looking, smooth, and very articulate and very smart. Cammy Franzese: Yes, he definitely is. He definitely doesn't fit the typical mobster look when you see the guys. I know couple of the names. I mean, when I used to hear them. One that comes to mind is when you're saying “big guy,” I think his name was, like, Fat Tony Salerno. PAT ROBERTSON: Yeah. Right. Cammy Franzese: He’d have the big cigar. But I think that's why they called Michael the Yuppie Don, because he was a different kind of mobster. PAT ROBERTSON: He went to jail though. Was that after you . . . . Cammy Franzese: Yes, yes. We were married for not that long, and he went to jail for the first time, for about four years. And then he came home for—he wasn't even home quite two years, and then he went back for another almost four years. PAT ROBERTSON: Come on. It was four years? For what? What did they get them for? Cammy Franzese: The first time it was racketeering and all kinds of other things. The main one was racketeering which you can get up to 20 years for that. PAT ROBERTSON: What does that mean? Cammy Franzese: Racketeering, truthfully, I'm not really sure, but from what I know, it's just a bunch of crimes that were committed at the same time, and they kind of put them altogether, and call it “racketeering.” I'm not really sure what it all meant. PAT ROBERTSON: Did they get him twice for the same thing? Cammy Franzese: The second time was a violation of his parole when were living out in California, because he was under such a watchful eye, and any little thing that he did was not okay, and to be honest, the second time when he came home, he was sort of cutting corners here and there, which he shouldn't have been doing. PAT ROBERTSON: What does it mean to cut corners? Cammy Franzese: You know, exactly what he was doing, I don't know. But for instance, I know he was involved with a company who was doing loans and mortgages, and he shouldn't have been in that business in the first place. So things like that, things of that nature. PAT ROBERTSON: Is Michael a financial genius? Is that the deal, handling books and stock, and all that? Cammy Franzese: I think so. I definitely think he is a genius. Anything he does, he does well when he puts his mind to it. PAT ROBERTSON: He didn't like the rough stuff. Did he have to get involved? Cammy Franzese: When he was younger, he claims works construction for a lot of years as a young kid, and then he worked in a pizza place making pizzas. But no, he's a thinker. He's a smart guy. PAT ROBERTSON: How did you get afoul of the law? They got you to. Cammy Franzese: They did. Yes, that was heartbreaking and really a difficult process for me. But because I was his wife and because we were involved in things together, and some of the things that went on, and one of the things, like I said, he did was signing my name to something, and I was not aware of any of this. So when I did get arrested, I was completely overwhelmed. PAT ROBERTSON: Was it one of those confrontations where you're screaming and hitting him, or did you just say, “Okay he's my husband, and that’s the way it is.” Cammy Franzese: No, I was screaming. I was screaming. I was so distraught, Pat, that I couldn't go visit him, because I didn't even know what I would say to him. I was just so bewildered. I think it's then when God really spoke to me and said, “You didn't put Me first in your life, and you put Michael first.” My mother warned me that, “Michael loves you, and he's an amazing man, but Michael will fail you, because he is human. But God will never fail you, and you need to put God first and foremost all the time.” I think I did for a long time. I have Michael on this pedestal that he could do no wrong, no matter what he did. This was a game changer for me. I know, this would've never happened if it were in New York, but because it was LA, and the detective was looking to make a name for himself. Michael was the big fish in town. So he came after me to get Michael to do what they wanted Michael to do, which he said he wouldn't do. So they figured, “Let's go after Cammy.” And that was tough. That changed a lot of things for me. It really sort of changed our relationship, because I sort of lost trust, and it took time to gain that back. PAT ROBERTSON: That's terrible. Cammy Franzese: But it was terrible. PAT ROBERTSON: How long were you in the joint? Cammy Franzese: Well, I was only in there for a couple of days, but it was horrible. PAT ROBERTSON: Oh, is that right? Cammy Franzese: I mean, my children were at home; and, thank God, my nanny who never spends the night slept over that night, so she was able to keep the children. PAT ROBERTSON: Were you raised Catholic? Your grandmother was Catholic? Cammy Franzese: My grandmother was Catholic. My mother was Catholic, and then my mom became a believer when I was around 13. And then seeing how God had worked in my mom's life, through a difficult time that she was going through with my father at the time when he was an alcoholic, and seeing the peace that she had, I just felt like I wanted and needed some of that. PAT ROBERTSON: Did you’re turning to the Lord bring Michael along, or was he finding it on his own? Cammy Franzese: Michael was a Catholic, so he always, he was a believer, but he just didn't know about relationship. He never had a relationship with the Lord. When I met Michael, when he shared with me about being a Catholic, and he was the only one in his family who went to church, and I shared with him about my faith, he thought it was kind of funny how I would have conversations with God, or always talking about “just leave it in God's hands,” or “God will come through,” or “God will take care,” so . . . . PAT ROBERTSON: It’s incredible. I asked him when he was with me, “How do you get out of the mob?” You don't normally do it except it's in a pine box. How about you? How they let you go? Cammy Franzese: Yes, that's what they say, that's what I believe that Michael is a walking miracle. Only by the grace of God is he here, because God had a different plan for Michael. God's plan. Michael's verse is when he talked about walking away and what it would mean for him to walk away. And I said, “With God anything is possible. We can do this.” My mom was like, we will pray you through it. My church was praying for us. Really, we get asked that question all the time. So only, only by the grace of God is he here. PAT ROBERTSON: Are there people still after him, or did they let it go? Cammy Franzese: No, I don’t think they are. The sad thing, and the unfortunate thing is—I say this because I feel for all the families that have gone through this. The ones who would be after him, who didn't like him, are either serving life in prison or are dead. So I just think, well, he's protected in that way. There could always be someone who just, a nephew, a grandson who wants to make a name for themselves, maybe. But I don't really think so. I think they’ve sort of given up on Mike and know he serves a different master now. PAT ROBERTSON: You all are strong now, as in a marriage, it's good? Cammy Franzese: We have our struggles. We have the consequences of the past 25 years, and the choices that Mike made, and we made over the years. We deal with that still sometimes. Because it's the past, doesn't mean it doesn't show up in your house every now and then. PAT ROBERTSON: What do you do for a living? What does he do for a living? Cammy Franzese: He’s a motivational speaker. He's written about four books. He's sharing his story all over the country. His passion is to be in the ministry 100 percent if God will allow him to do that sometime soon. He's doing a couple of TV shows, so he's got a lot going on, but his priority is to just serve God. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, we thank God for you. Where can people get your book, by the way? Cammy Franzese: They can get it on Amazon, Barnes and Noble. PAT ROBERTSON: All right, This Thing of Ours, La Cosa Nostra. Cammy Franzese: This Thing of Ours. PAT ROBERTSON: Do you go into detail about how it was? Cammy Franzese: I do. I actually go into a lot of detail about life with Michael in the past 25 years and a little bit of my story growing up, which got sort of prepared me for this life with Michael, because my father was a little bit of a rebel as a young girl growing up. So I’ve had a little bit of schooling with that. But, yeah, it goes into when I first really, really got a good look at what Michael's life was really about and just the feelings of dealing with that, and children, and the repercussions of the life. My mother plays an important part in the book, because she was the prayer warrior from day one. PAT ROBERTSON: You're so young looking. You've got four kids? Cammy Franzese: I have four children, yes. PAT ROBERTSON: How did you stay so young? Cammy Franzese: Good genes maybe? PAT ROBERTSON: Cammy Franzese. Is it Franzese? Cammy Franzese: Franzese. Cammy Franzese. PAT ROBERTSON: Okay, well, there it is. This Thing of Ours, and you can get it where books are sold. Cammy, God bless you. Thank you so much. You're terrific. Cammy Franzese: Thank you, Pat. Thank you so much. PAT ROBERTSON: Terry, what's next? TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, still ahead, a world-class skier who hit the slopes and then hit his head. Man: I learned this new trick the week earlier. And it involved, 2 1/2, three rotations, and flipping, and I went off to jump, and unfortunately I went a little too fast. I overshot the landing, and I was knocked unconscious. TERRY MEEUWSEN: But that wasn't his last crash. Hear how he recovered when we return. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 3: PUBLISHERS CLEARING HOUSE Publishers Clearing House Rep: You won the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes! PRAYER MURAL JOHN JESSUP: A federal court has ordered a Rhode Island public high school to remove a prayer mural from its auditorium. And a few students sued Cranston city and school officials there. She claimed the mural promotes religion, and is offensive to non-Christians. City officials though say the mural is a historical artifact, and serves no religious purpose. But a federal judge ruled in favor of the student, ordering the immediate removal of the mural. PROPERTY BATTLES JOHN JESSUP: The Episcopal Church has won another property battle with breakaway churches. This time in Virginia. A judge has ruled that the denomination can take back several historic churches. The most famous buildings include Truro Church in Fairfax, and the Falls Church, for which the town of Falls Church was named. Both trace their roots all the way back to George Washington. The buildings are still occupied by breakaway congregations that left the denomination over its increasingly liberal theology. The conservative congregations are considering an appeal. Anaiah lived for the mountains and the ski slopes. It was the only place he felt free. ANDREW KNOX: Growing up Anaiah Kirk found his sanctuary in the great outdoors. Anaiah Kirk: I grew up in a small town in California by Yosemite. So naturally me and my brother, and my father, we spent a lot of time outdoors, backpacking, skiing, basically anything and everything you could do outdoors, I did. ANDREW KNOX: Church was also a centerpiece of the Kirk home. Anaiah Kirk: We went to church every Sunday, and every Wednesday. I always look forward to the summer's. We did youth retreats, and for me that was kind of where I discovered God. ANDREW KNOX: But when Anaiah was 14 years old, his parents divorced, and Anaiah’s faith in God was shattered. Anaiah Kirk: My mother didn't just get a divorce; she left the church that I had been brought up in. So when she left, to me wasn't just a divorce, and it was kind of like a religious split, right down the core of who I was. I started to doubt the things that had been instilled in me, as far as God, and love, and relationships. ANDREW KNOX: To escape the problems at home, Anaiah shut down emotionally and hit the ski slopes. Anaiah Kirk: It was just my outlet to get out of the house, to go up on the mountain, whether it was just with friends or just by myself. I saw a bunch of skiers going off jumps that snowboarders went off of, and to me it was a whole new concept when I saw these guys doing tricks and flips. ANDREW KNOX: During his teen years, Anaiah became one of California's top half-pipe skiers. His big break came during his senior year in high school when he placed 13th in the U.S. Open at Vail Colorado, against 200 of the nation's best skiers. Suddenly sponsors were at his door with the possibility of contracts, a professional skiing career and the chance to travel the world. Anaiah Kirk: In the back of my mind it was, if I go pro, I could do magazines, I could have girls galore, the party scene. So that became my focus, and a sense that was my idol. ANDREW KNOX: Anaiah eventually moved to Mammoth California, a bustling ski town where he pursued his professional career. He also had a serious girlfriend, and a carefree life off the slopes, but it wasn't long before Anaiah’s dreams came crashing down. Anaiah Kirk: I got up just like a normal day. I headed out to the slopes, and I learned this new trick the week earlier, and it involved 2 1/2, three rotations and flipping. I went off the jump, and unfortunately I went a little too fast. I was overshot the landing, and I was knocked unconscious. ANDREW KNOX: It was Anaiah’s sixth concussion. When his symptoms lasted longer than normal, doctors told Anaiah he couldn't ski for a month. Three days later Anaiah was drinking at a party and got involved in a fight. Anaiah Kirk: I was jumped by about three or four guys, punched in the head. I was knocked out, just blindsided and knocked out, kicked in the head and then thrown down some stairs. ANDREW KNOX: He was taken to the hospital where tests revealed a hemorrhage. Neurologists told Anaiah he couldn't risk another head injury, and that he could never ski again. Anaiah Kirk: And when I told one of my main sponsors what had happened, I was three weeks away, three or four weeks away from signing a contract, and they basically said well, it looks like the seasons over. So when they told me, we'll look at you next year, I basically knew right then and there, I lost my chance with this. ANDREW KNOX: Just days later Anaiah caught his girlfriend sleeping with another man. Anaiah Kirk: It was the very first time in my life that I have thought about suicide. I lost everything in one week, and I've never been so low in my life. It was worse than my parents’ divorce. I put my head down on the kitchen counter, and I just started bawling. ANDREW KNOX: Through his tears Anaiah saw a family Bible that he hadn't opened in years. Anaiah Kirk: When I saw the words “Holy Bible,” I basically had a word with God, and I said, “I'll give you one chance. I'll open up your Bible. I'll open up your Word, and if you talk to me, I'll consider you, but otherwise, if you don't talk to me right now, I'll never open this Word again.” ANDREW KNOX: When Anaiah opened the Bible, he felt the words were speaking directly to him. Anaiah Kirk: The Lord just basically told me in a nutshell, “Hey, I want you to come home. You’ve given your cares to this world, and you've given your life to things that don't really matter, and I love you and I want you to come home.” So I was able to get through that night. I woke up the next morning, and I thought it was pretty cool when I opened up the Bible, and he actually spoke directly to me, and it made sense to me. So I opened up the Bible again, and this time he talked about the prodigal son returning home. ANDREW KNOX: Anaiah felt God was calling him to return to his hometown. But he was still hesitant. Anaiah Kirk: For the first time in years I just spoke out loud to God. I said, “God, if you really want me home, the only reason I'm here is because I'm trying to save up money to get a better car.” And as soon as those words left my mouth, my aunt called. I don't want you living in Mammoth. If you come home, I'll give you the car that's in my garage. So I turned around. I didn't even go to church that day, and I packed my stuff, and I headed home. ANDREW KNOX: Anaiah went to church his first Sunday and started attending a men's Bible study. During that time a friend prayed with Anaiah. Anaiah Kirk: It wasn't what he said, but it was that overwhelming love that really started to take place. It felt like a blanket was thrown over me. I knew there was a God. I knew that He loved me. I knew He had a will for my life, and I wanted His will for my life. So when I walked away that night totally changed. ANDREW KNOX: In 2007 Anaiah married Amy, a longtime friend from his hometown. Today he is a counselor for Prison Inmates and still skis for fun. He's also written a book called, The Life I Always Wanted, telling the youth of this generation about his passion for seeking Christ. Anaiah Kirk: It’s just been overwhelming peace, and overwhelming fulfillment in my life. There's things that I'm doing now that I never thought I would be doing. My message to my generation is basically we pursue anything and everything trying to find fulfillment in life. I searched for everything, whether it was relationships, whether it was girls, skiing, being popular, and my messages no matter what you chase, no matter what you pursue, you will never be fulfilled until you open the door to Jesus Christ. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TERRY MINISTER TERRY MEEUWSEN: Anaiah is really right about that. You know, he did a very right thing in the midst of this chaos. Sometimes life is like that. You get to a point where everything is; it's easy to not consider God. It's easy to not take Him seriously when everything is going your way. But then you have those times where life just kind of seems to implode, and you're just almost stunned by the blow of it all, or the emptiness of it all, or the disappointment of it all. The right thing Anaiah did was, he turned to God. He might not have done it with all of his heart at that moment, because he wasn't ready, he did the first step. He said, “I'm going to open your Word. I'm going to turn away from bitterness, and anger. I'm going to turn to your Word, and I'm asking you God, to speak to me.” God wants to speak to you. He said, “I love you,” to Anaiah. “Come home.” That's what God is saying to you today. “I love you, your circumstances, your past, I'm not looking at that. I'm looking at you, and I want you to be my child. I want to be your dad. I want to be there for you, give you what you need, love you in your hurt places, fill you in the empty places, give your vision of who I am, and who you are in me.” Who wouldn't say yes to that? Today you have a chance to do that. God is saying, “I love you, come home.” So come, come, take the first step. This is what happened with Anaiah as he read the Word, he realized that everything he'd known about God, had gotten thrown away, because he was disillusioned or hurt, or didn't understand, was real. And that even though he had moved away from God, God had never moved away from him. God has not moved away from you either. This moment, this day, this story of what you have just saw, is God hand extended to you, saying, “I love you. Come home.” It begins with asking him, inviting him into your heart and your life. He doesn't come marching in. He's waiting for you to say, “I want you.” It's already a given that God wants you, but will you want him today? Ask Him. Ask Him to forgive you for your sins. Ask Him to cleanse you, to give you the new beginning his Word promises. Get into His Word. It's filled with wonderful promises of God for all of us, if we’ll receive them. Pat, this is Sarah, who says, “Pat, I know you started CBN from nothing, so you know something about starting a business. I feel God has given me an idea, and I really want to start my own business. I think I am able to get a business loan but what do I do first? How do I put together a business plan? And where do I go from there?” PAT ROBERTSON: Oh my, my, my. I can't tell you that in a couple of minutes. But the big thing is you have to have something that people want, and what do they say, “find a need and fill it.” You want to be able to satisfy a need at a profit. You have to sell something for more money than it costs you to make whatever it is you're doing, whether it's a service or whatever. I would recommend you start small, wherever you are, whatever it is you want to do, instead of going out for a business loan. Yes, you can do a business plan and you put down the resources you need, how you're going to deploy them, how many people are going to be working. You figure out how much profit's going to be. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Sort of the architectural rendering for a business. PAT ROBERTSON: Exactly. That's what a business plan is. It can be very simple. Okay, there are books on this, lots and lots of books. TERRY MEEUWSEN: And on line. I'm sure you can get all kinds of advice on it. PAT ROBERTSON: Sure. How to start a business. But I just say start small. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Would you say that's the biggest mistake most people make, if they go to big, too soon? PAT ROBERTSON: Absolutely. Absolutely. And they don't know what they're doing. All right, next. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Sarah, there you go. Cherrie says, “Pat, yesterday you said pornography is not adultery and is not grounds for divorce. Yet in the book Bring It On that you wrote, it is. Now I'm confused. Which one is it?” PAT ROBERTSON: It's a question of how much time I have to think when I write a book, and how little I have to think when I answer these questions. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, also, I think you were saying also that technically, I mean . . . . PAT ROBERTSON: Well, we’re talking about divorce, and if you catch your spouse watching pornography, is that reason to divorce him? And the answer is no. Is it a type of adultery? Yes, in a sense with your mind. You're lusting after a woman with your eyes, so Jesus said, that's adultery. So technically. But I think the question I had on this program was, “Was this grounds to go get a divorce?” And I just don't think it is. I don't think because your husband or wife is watching porn, that you ought to divorce him. TERRY MEEUWSEN: I think you also have to take that a little bit further with regard to the divorce question and say, “Does he eventually worked to getting out of it?” I don't think you stay in a scenario where that becomes the core. PAT ROBERTSON: If somebody is just totally given over to it, it's a type of addiction. All right. But you caught me. Thank you. TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Elaine who says, “I filed for divorce, because my husband left me and refused to reconcile. I never cheated or did anything terrible. Do I have to stay unmarried to be a Christian?” PAT ROBERTSON: I don't think so. Your husband deserted you. There's something called the “Pauline Privilege,” which says if the unbelieving spouse is pleased to depart, let them depart. The brother or sister is not bound in that case. So that's desertion. Your husband has deserted you, left you, and through no fault of your own, and you're not bound in that case according to the apostle Paul. Okay, have we got time? TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Lois who writes, “My daughter has a good career. Her husband doesn't. He won't work hard or help pay the bills. How can she be a submissive wife when he doesn't care about the home?” Wow. PAT ROBERTSON: It really breaks me up to see very capable women who are married to men who are instead of class A, they are class D, and they don't want to perform. The problem is that really isn't a ground for divorce. You married him. And so I would just counsel people to be more cautious before you take on a life partner. But, at the same time, your daughter can go her own way with her own career, the fact that her husband is not participating. That stuff will . . . . TERRY MEEUWSEN: She probably has to if there's a family. PAT ROBERTSON: Yeah. Well here’s a word for you . . . . GRAPHIC: Galatians 5:14 “For all the law is fulfilled on one word, even in this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (NKJV) “For all the law is fulfilled in one word, you should love your neighbor as yourself.” That's all the time we've got.
