Man: Some people use tears. I didn’t trust tears. GORDON ROBERTSON: A seminary student with a double life. Man: I had my private world and my real world. GORDON ROBERTSON: Hear his secret. Man: I felt like “I'm only one step away from being found out.” GORDON ROBERTSON: And his shame. Man: I would actually carve those words into my body: “Loser,” “Failure,” “Rejected.” * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, welcome to The 700 Club. The Muslim brotherhood appears to be on its way to power in Egypt. Egyptians are voting this week in their latest round of elections for a new government. TERRY MEEUWSEN: And so far the Islamic groups have been gaining the most votes. That may not be good news for Israel. Mark Martin has the story. MARK MARTIN: The Muslim brotherhood is yet to be seated in a new parliament, and already it is giving the world a hint at how it may govern. Like Israel's enemy in Gaza, Hamas, the brotherhood says it will never recognize Israel's right to exist. The deputy chairman of the Muslim brotherhood, Rashad al-Bayoumi, reportedly said Sunday, that his organization will not recognize Israel under any circumstances. He called Israel an “occupying criminal entity.” Bayoumi also said the brotherhood will take legal steps to cancel the 1979 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. But the State Department says the Muslim brotherhood has told it privately that it won't break Egypt's treaty with Israel. Bayoumi’s statement came just two days before Egyptians began the third round of voting to elect members of a new parliament. The brotherhood won about 36 percent of the vote in the first two rounds of voting. The extreme Islamist al-Nour Party received about 29 percent. This Egyptians says he won't be voting for secularists. Tarek Shawki (Egyptian voter): Why don't we try Islamists? We have tried seculars, liberals, and communists before, and they ruined the country. So we should try Islamists this time. And if it doesn't work well, it's not a problem. We can change them. MARK MARTIN: But Middle East analyst Walid Phares says once the Muslim brotherhood establishes control of a new government, Egyptians may find it difficult to change course. Walid Phares (Middle East analyst): Their plan is basically to move into government, into those ministries, into bureaucracies, and eventually into the armed forces, and seize power as much as they can. The Muslim brotherhood’s aim, final goal, is to establish an Islamic state like Iran, or like Sudan, or ultimately like the Taliban. MARK MARTIN: And what’s next? The struggle who will draft a new constitution. Muslim brotherhood once the new Parliament to appoint the people assigned to write the document, but the ruling military council says it will decide. It wants the new constitution to be written by non-Islamists as well, including Christians. Mark Martin, CBN News. GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, it’s a difficult time particularly for Israel when you look at the nations surrounding her, they all appear to be bent on her destruction now, and what was an Arab spring is now turning into a Muslim theocracy coming. And if you think they are going to honor that treaty, if you believe our government saying, “Well, we’ve had private conversations with them and they want to honor their international obligations,” well, they are saying that just to maintain the US support which is in the billions of dollars for military aid to Egypt. And what are they going to do with that? Well, exactly what they did to Anwar Sadat. He recognized the state of Israel. He established the peace treaty, the Camp David Accords, and as a result the Muslim Brotherhood assassinated him. And when they say “we will not recognize Israel,” they mean it. And when they say they're going to cancel that treaty, they mean it as well. Lee Webb has the rest of our top stories from the CBN Newsroom. Lee. UNEMPLOYMENT REPORT LEE WEBB: Gordon, the unemployment rate fell slightly last month. Dropping by a 10th of a point to 8.5 Percent. That is the lowest level in nearly 3 years, and better than most analysts expected. But economists of don't look for the jobs picture to improve significantly in the months ahead. FUNDRAISING BOOST LEE WEBB: Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum raised $2 million in just two days after his strong showing in Iowa. Santorum's campaign is taking in money faster than ever, and he's moving up in the national polls. Mitt Romney remains number-one in the latest Rasmussen poll with 29 Percent. Santorum is second at 21. Newt Gingrich is third at 16 percent, and Ron Paul fourth at 12. Romney still has a commanding lead, though, in New Hampshire, but Santorum has moved up to third, there, behind Ron Paul. MILITARY STRATEGY LEE WEBB: President Obama says the US will no longer have the capability of fighting two major wars at the same time, at least while he's Commander-in-Chief. Mr. Obama announced his new defense strategy at the Pentagon yesterday. It is a plan triggered by budget cuts. It will reduce the military focus on Afghanistan and Iraq and place a new emphasis on Asia. The administration says it doesn't anticipate military conflict in Asia, but Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says, the US has been so involved in Iraq and Afghanistan that it did not strengthen its position in other parts of the world like Asia. The new plan also identifies India is a long-term economic insecurity partner in that region. DEADLY FLOODING LEE WEBB: Doctors in the Philippines are fighting a deadly disease carried by water. The outbreak comes in areas swamped by flash floods after the worst tropical storm in that nation in three years. The storm hit in mid-December, and survivors are still dealing with the aftermath, the death toll, well over 1000 and rising. But as Charlene Israel reports, CBN is on the scene to help. CHARLENE ISRAEL: Schoolteacher Erwin Abad is grieving for the many elementary school students who died in the powerful flash floods in northern Mindanao, but she's also concerned for the survivors. She turned to the Christian Disaster Relief teams to comfort the traumatized students who escaped the tragedy. Erwin Abad (Teacher of Survivors): I don't know how to comfort them, because I am also a victim of the flood. So I wasn’t able to respond immediately to their side. That's why I asked for some program just to give my students a hug. CHARLENE ISRAEL: Fifteen-year-old Jessa Mae Molion said she could still hear her father shouting instructions to her and other family members as the floodwaters swept them away. Jessa Mae Molion: He said, “Child hang on to the piece of wood and don't let go. Just cling to each other.” My father was trying to help a paralyzed man, but the water was already high, and the current was very strong. Until now he is still missing. I want to see my father again. Jessa Mae barely made it. She was found floating in the open sea, clinging to a piece of wood when a boat rescued her the next morning. Seventeen-year-old Herlyn still complains of pain in her stomach, because rescuers had to pump a lot of water from her body. She claims she was already dead when rescuers found her and brought her back to life. Herlyn Catampatan (Flashflood Survivor): Our house was being swept by the flood water, and I was trapped inside and was rescued after an hour. I woke up and found myself lying on the street. I wanted to go back and look for my family. But I learned they are all safe. Thank God we are all alive. CHARLENE ISRAEL: CBN served lunch to Jessa Mae, Herlyn and other students from Erwin’s school. CBN staff and volunteers listened to their stories and followed up with counseling, prayers and much-needed hugs. Herlyn Catampatan: Thank you very, very much! It is only once in a while that we can eat this kind of food. Most of the time we eat spoiled food. But today we were able to eat delicious food. Molion: Thank you to all of you. My brother and I are so full. We are happy to be able to eat even if we don't have money. CHARLENE ISRAEL: The survivors were also given mats, fresh clothes and slippers. Perhaps most importantly they received comfort and hope to overcome difficulties in the days ahead. CBN has doubled relief efforts in the devastated areas, distributing food and other relief goods to thousands of affected families. Medical missions are also being conducted in evacuation centers. And to address the severe shortage of potable water, CBN has set up water purifiers throughout the area. In the months ahead, CBN will be there to provide for their physical, emotional and spiritual rehabilitation. Charlene Israel, CBN News. LEE WEBB: Our hearts go out to them. Gordon, I know you have a great love for the people of the Philippines. What are you hearing from our ministry team there? GORDON ROBERTSON: I’m hearing that we are on the ground, and we're helping people in need in very unusual ways, because the teams are going out at night. GRAPHIC: CBN DISASTER RELIEF FUND 1-800-759-0700 CBN.COM That’s when the families have the greatest need. They're trying to find shelter. They're trying to find food, they're trying to find water. During the day they're trying to clean up, but at night they gather together, and that's the time that our teams are reaching out. And we're doing it in your name. If you're part of the 700 Club, you're part of that relief effort. If you want to give a special gift to help the disaster relief teams, not just in the Philippines, but around the world, we have a CBN Disaster Relief Fund. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Boy, we are a spoiled people; when you hear a child say we usually have to eat spoiled food, but today “we get this hamburger!” Amazing. Well, we have an opportunity to make a difference, and we hope you'll join us in that. Well, one year ago a gunman shot down congresswoman Gabriel Giffords. She lived, but six other people died including nine-year-old Christina Taylor Green. President Obama: Christina was an “A” student. She was a dancer. She was a gymnast. She was a swimmer. I want our democracy to be as good as Christina imagined it. TERRY MEEUWSEN: The mother of Christina Taylor Green talks about their daughter and the tragedy that claimed her life. That's next. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 1: SWISS AMERICA Pat Boone (Entertainer): Have you ever heard the expression “good as gold?” Well, gold is on everybody’s minds these days, and rightfully so, having risen in value dramatically since 2001. For years now, I’ve been singing the praises of one of the most recognized and trusted names in gold, Swiss America. They believe, like I do, that people need to know what’s good about gold. Gold has withstood the test of time, and so has Swiss America. Now is the time to rediscover gold, because gold offers diversification, profit, potential, and best of all, privacy. Call or visit online now and ask for the Pat Boone DVD, and they will gladly rush out a copy along with other information about getting gold into your nest egg. If you’re going to buy gold, buy it from a company you can trust. I did. And I’ve been a satisfied Swiss America customer for over 15 years. They are as good as gold. Call or log on right now. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NEXT DAY PROMO GORDON ROBERTSON: Monday . . . . GRAPHIC: WIPEOUT Young Man: The next thing I know, I was upside down. GORDON ROBERTSON: A top skateboarder hits rock-bottom. Young Man: Bolted that thing on my head, and it was like pretty gnarly. GORDON ROBERTSON: And then . . . . GRAPHIC: CAMPING ACCIDENT Young Man: I knew something was wrong and I looked up, and Carter wasn't to be seen. GORDON ROBERTSON: A camper falls 60 feet into waters below. Young Man: It didn't even look like Carter. From that moment on, I thought he was dead. GORDON ROBERTSON: How he survived on Monday’s 700 Club. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: One year ago this Sunday, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot during a political rally in her home state of Arizona. Six people were killed that day including nine-year-old Christina Taylor Green. This is her story. SET UP ANDREA GARRETT: Her young life was cut short on a day Americans will not soon forget. TV Newsman: We are following a developing story, and it comes to us out of Tucson, Arizona. TV Newswoman: The victim of this shooting was just nine years old. ANDREA GARRETT: Her life started on a another dark day for America: September 11, 2001. President Obama: Christina was an A student. She was a dancer, she was a gymnast, she was a swimmer. She showed an appreciation for life. ANDREA GARRETT: Christina Green, now known as “the little angel of Tucson,” is a symbol of innocence in the midst of evil, gunned down at an Arizona rallied for Congresswoman Gabriele Giffords. Now her mother recounts Christina's life and her daughter’s dream for an America that embodied freedom, liberty, and opportunity. In her book, As Good As She Imagined, The Redeeming Story of the Angel of Tucson, Roxanna Green writes about the precious little girl who loved politics and loved her country even more. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FOCUS GUEST: ROXANNA GREEN GORDON ROBERTSON: Well, joining us now is the author of that book, Roxanna Green, As Good a She Imagined, and welcome to The 700 Club. Roxanna Green: Thank you very much. GORDON ROBERTSON: I can't imagine losing a child. It just seems unimaginable, and then in the process of dealing with it, you’re writing this book. Why? Roxanna Green: Well, we just wanted to make sure America and the nation in the entire world knows how exceptional our child was. She was an amazing little girl. She was a really good Christian. She was an “A” student, and she did an amazing things in the nine years she was on earth. She did many things that people don't get accomplished in their whole lifetime. GORDON ROBERTSON: Not too many make it on the Little League team. Roxanna Green: No, they don't. GORDON ROBERTSON: And she was the only girl that did it. But one of the more touching parts of this book for me was looking through the pictures, and particularly the picture of her and her First Communion. She's just beaming, and you can just see the love coming out of her. When you first heard that she was gone, what happened with you? How did you start just dealing with that? Roxanna Green: Well, the power of prayer. My family and friends, they all came around and gathered around us. We've are overwhelmed by love and prayer, and we just all prayed really, really hard, and our faith got us through it, because it was a horrific, horrible time, probably the worst time of our lives. And we just thank God for helping us through it. GORDON ROBERTSON: Have you come to any kind of understanding of the shooter or how anybody could have 37 bullets in a gun, how could this have happened? Have you come to any kind of, “Lord, I can forgive him. I can set him free?” Roxanna Green: I had to do that the very beginning. I don't even think about him, and I don't waste any energy thinking about him. I just think he was a very sick individual, mentally ill, and unfortunately he didn't have treatment, or people around him didn't see the red flags, so I had to forgive him for myself very much in the beginning, so I could go on and concentrate on positive things, and be a good mom and wife to my family. GORDON ROBERTSON: You had a very special thing happen to you in the middle of the night, and you've got a whole chapter in the book on it. I just found it fascinating that your daughter would come visit you in a dream. Tell us about that. Roxanna Green: Well, she usually comes to visit me about three o'clock in the morning, a little bit after three o'clock in the morning, and what I write about in the book is one particular time that she came to visit me, and told me that she was very, very happy in Heaven, and that she was with the Angels and with God, and with my mother, her grandmother. And she didn't want me to cry anymore or be sad, just to be happy, because she was in a better place, and that she was having a great time. GORDON ROBERTSON: Did that help you through it? Roxanna Green: Oh, yes. We've always believed in Heaven, but it was just like a confirmation. It just seemed so real, and the bright light in her face. We know that we are going to see her again. We believe in Heaven; were good Christians, but just to have that dream, or I don't know what it was; it was just so real. It was like she was there in the room with me. GORDON ROBERTSON: What was her sort of dream, if you will, for America? I mean, the title is, As Good As She Imagined. What was her dream? Roxanna Green: Her dream was to be a doctor, a politician, to give back in some way or another, and she did that her entire life. She was a giver. She was always concerned about less fortunate people, especially children, so we're making her dreams come true through our foundation, The Christina Tyler Greene Memorial Foundation. So we've always done that is a little family, but now we're doing a much larger scale and hope to take the foundation nationwide. GRAPHIC: LOG ON TO CBN.COM So I'm going to try to make all her dreams come true as best as I can. GORDON ROBERTSON: Okay, what of the first projects for the foundation? Roxanna Green: Well, so far we've built a brand-new playground at her school, and we've given away $150,000 dollars to various schools for school supplies and computers, and smart boards, and things like that. We've had clothing, food drives. We just had a big toy drive for Salvation Army, for Christmas; and we've given away funds to help teachers with school supplies, and we've had backpack drives, various things like that. GORDON ROBERTSON: What would you say to the people that lost loved ones that day? And maybe they haven't had some of the experiences you've had to help you get through it. What would you tell them? Roxanna Green: I would just tell them to pray, to gather your friends and family and pray hard, and stick together, and that your faith will get you through it. Because it certainly has helped us so much in our family. GORDON ROBERTSON: Okay, all right. The book, As Good As She Imagined. It's available nationwide. You can find out more on the foundation by just going to CBN.com. We'll have a link over to the wonderful foundation, the work they're doing. Thank you for being with us. Roxanna Green: Thank you for having me. GORDON ROBERTSON: All right. Well Terry, over to you. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Still ahead, on Sundays he was a preacher. On Mondays, he was a cutter. Man: “I'm only one step away from being found out.” I felt like “God wants perfection, and I can't be perfect therefore I'm evil and wicked.” Self injury was a way for me to be authentic. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Hear why he lived a double life when we come back. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 2A: CANCER TREATMENT CENTERS Woman: Something inside of me just told me I need to get checked out. Well, for Kary Oberbrunner it was the only pain he felt he could control. Kary Oberbrunner: I felt horrible. I felt like an imposter. I felt like I'm only one step away from being found out. I was a very highly functioning individual that had a secret story. ANDREW KNOX: Kary Oberbrunner had just met the woman of his dreams. He was a seminary student, a pastor. But he had a secret addiction. The secret started early when Kary was just a boy. Kary Oberbrunner: I just remember as a young kid being made fun of a lot. I had a girl's name; I hated it. I had a stuttering problem. For me words were very important. If some friend called me a name, it really affected me. ANDREW KNOX: Kary’s family was deeply involved in church. But Kary didn't think he could be honest with God about his feelings. Kary Oberbrunner: I kind of believed the lie that when you go to God, you go to Him all cleaned up. You don't come to Him upset, angry, frustrated; you just put on the smile and you serve Him with your performance. That was kind of the way that I went through life. I remember I had an AWANA leader who committed suicide. A classmate died of brain cancer. My mom had had two strokes right before that. These were examples that just kept piling up more and more. ANDREW KNOX: Kary didn't know how to express the pain that he was feeling. Kary Oberbrunner: The normal ways that people cope, some people use tears. I didn't trust tears. When I cut off emotion. I think emotion for me was unsafe. It meant weakness. And so I was just going to suck it up, deal with it and move on. I remember I would be alone, and I felt a lot of pain inside. I would actually bite my arm. There was just something about seeing the pain that made me feel better. ANDREW KNOX: Kary’s stoicism finally crumbled in his last year of high school. Kary Oberbrunner: I was a state qualifier for the wrestling team. And this was my dream, wrestling. This is what I was good at. And right before the wrestling state tournament, I had gotten injured, had a concussion, and had to drop the team, drop the tournament. ANDREW KNOX: All that was left was the school play. Kary Oberbrunner: It's my turn to give my lines, and I stand up to speak; and everyone thought I was joking, because I couldn't get my lines out. And then the whole cast starts laughing at me. And right there, I said, “Forget it God; I'm done.” ANDREW KNOX: And then Kary’s dad had a massive heart attack. God seemed more distant than ever. Kary Oberbrunner: I felt like God could do anything, anytime. And let's face it; God let His own son, Jesus, be killed. So I didn't feel very safe with God. That was really a time where I first remember using a knife to self injure. It was this emotional overload. So I didn't pursue the paths of drugs or sex or those types of things. I knew where all of that would lead: into more pain. And so here I am trapped. Suicide is wrong; it's out of the question. Sex, drugs, all of that’s wrong, and yet I have intense anger. Where do I go with that? And I went to myself. At least with self injury, I could control how deep, how long the cut was, how often; and I didn't really have to deal with God. I kind of describe it as a spiritual Heisman, where if you know the Heisman pose like that. I kept God pushed away with my hands. I would serve Him, and I had a hand over my heart. And I said, “No way are You coming into my heart, Lord.” ANDREW KNOX: Kary graduated from high school and decided to attend seminary with a definite goal in mind. Kary Oberbrunner: I felt like rather than run from God, I'll go into the profession where I can control God. I'll appease Him with my actions. I'll get on His good side with ministry, but I will completely be absent from Him with my heart. So it was a very tough, dual world that I had. I had my private world and my real world, and as a result I was really in torment. ANDREW KNOX: The dual world Kary was living in took its toll, and he retreated even further into self injury. Kary Oberbrunner: I felt horrible. I felt like an imposter. I felt like I'm only one step away from being found out. Another thing was punishment. I did not feel okay with being imperfect. I felt like God wants perfection, and I can't be perfect; therefore I'm evil and wicked. And self injury was a way for me to be authentic. But there were deep times where I felt so intense with my anger at God and myself that I would actually carve those words into my body: “Loser,” “Failure,” “Rejected.” ANDREW KNOX: Seminary got even tougher when Kary learned that he would have to take a counseling class. Kary Oberbrunner: I would never have chosen counseling. I do not want to get close to my issues at all, but because I wanted to be an Air Force chaplain, my mentor, Dr. David Plaster said, “Man, if you're going to be with soldiers, if you're going to be in wartime situation, you need to go and do an M.Div. in counseling.” ANDREW KNOX: About that time he met Kelly, a fellow counseling student. Kary Oberbrunner: I was the poster child for conformity at the seminary, and she was a nonconformist. I was drawn to her, but I was also scared. Pursuing love meant pursuing the potential for pain. ANDREW KNOX: In spite of his insecurity, Kary and Kelly got engaged. But then Kary was forced to take off the mask completely. The professors are saying, “Look, when you're counseling other people in your lab situations, you’re not going to their places of pain. Why not?” And they began to really get into my issues, and now I'm caught. I knew to enter that world would be to release control, and that was so scary for me. That was the breaking point where I said I no longer am I going to wear this mask. And so I did go to my professor after self injuring one time, and I remember showing him the marks. Rather than acceptance, this professor told me I wasn't fit to be a counselor. ANDREW KNOX: When Kary received his grade, he was devastated. Kary Oberbrunner: I had failed the class. I was so angry, because I had trusted God. I had trusted this new world. I had stepped out and taken off the mask. And by doing that, I felt my God had let me down. The breaking point with God was when I moved from displaying anger at myself, and instead I displayed at upon God. And I remember just pouring out words, yelling, shaking my fist at God, and that was the moment of breakthrough. When I felt like finally it's not me carrying this anymore. ANDREW KNOX: Kary started being honest about his feelings. Kary Oberbrunner: What I really began to find was a language for my pain. I had people like David Plaster, like Kelly, that modeled to me love and acceptance, even though I was imperfect. That really propelled me forward. ANDREW KNOX: Kary went to counseling, and his healing has taken time, but today he is walking in the freedom that he can trust God with his pain. Kary Oberbrunner: Before that, I viewed God as distant. “He’s separate from my pain. He's removed. He's watching it from a distance.” All of this changed when I had an experience with my first son. We were at the pediatrician at the office when he was only one month old, and it was time for his shots, and in walks the nurse. The nurse has four honkin’ needles. My son, and I'm holding him, and he's looking at me, and I'm looking at him, and we’re having this moment like nothing’s wrong. The world's right, and everything is cool. And she stuck him with the first needle. And my son looks at me and just screams, just yells. And I'm holding him, and the nurse says I've got to hold him tighter, because he's squirming. And the second needle, the third needle, the fourth needle, and now my heart is breaking. And I realized in that moment, this is the way God feels when we experience pain. He's not over there saying to the Angels, “Stick him again.” He's actually the father who's holding us tight. I couldn't get on my knees and explain to my son the reason for the pain, because he can't understand it. It's the same thing in our lives. God can't get on his knees and explain to us why he's allowing the pain. He can only hold us tighter, and that's how I see God now. I see God as this loving Father who holds us tight, holds us close, and every time we experience pain, He says I wish I could take it for them, but I can't. So also I can do is hold them close. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TERRY MINISTER TERRY MEEUWSEN: You know, perfect people don't need a Savior. Jesus came because we're not perfect people, because we have wounds that need healing, because we have sin that needs forgiving, because we are weak and imperfect, and we need His strength, His wisdom. We need His grace and his mercy. All of that, all of that, God who loves you so much as your Father, made provision for, when He sent His son. You know, the lie of the enemy is, that God's not there, that He doesn't care, that you are worthless, not worth fighting for, and there's no way out of your situation. It is a lie. But sometimes before we know the Father, before we understand the immense immeasurable love that He has for us, we allow the lie to identify as. We received that as who we are. We receive it, that we are unworthy, that we are not capable, that we are doomed, that we are desolate, we are deserted, we’re unforgiven, we are filled with sin, we can’t—there's no hope, that there's no future. But Jesus came to set the captive free. He wasn't talking about someone in a physical cage. He was talking about the captivity that we wind up having in our own hearts, and in our own minds because of our own failures and shortcomings, because we don't see or understand the pain, or the big picture. But God knows, and He loves us even in our weakness, even in our sinfulness. The Bible says while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. You don't have to get cleaned up. You don't have to get good enough. Jesus came to heal our imperfection, to forgive our sin, to open the door to wholeness in Him and a whole new beginning, not a patched up past that's just good enough to get by. This is also what His Word says, this is a promise for you. If any man is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things pass away, and all things become new. And you can have that beginning in your life. I love Kary’s honesty. If I'm in a hurting place, I want a Kary Oberbrunner to be the counselor for me, because he's walked through it. And you know what, the Bible says there's nothing that you or I walk-through, experience, feel, that Jesus hasn't experienced and doesn't understand. You have not just a brother and a Savior and the Lord in Him, but an advocate who understands and knows your every need. It's scary, when you've been hurt, to trust somebody. We tend to do what Kary talked about. Okay, God, I'm going to hold you over here, and cover my heart. I’ll give you this much of my life but don't come any further. Because we're afraid to trust. Today I hope in Kary’s story you heard the truth, the reality that no one will ever be more trustworthy in your life than Jesus Christ. He's the Rock upon which we can stand and know we will always have a firm foundation. He said I will never leave you or forsake you. Not ever. Always there with us. Always holding us even when the pain is coming. Even when the fear is there. Even when we don't know He's doing it, He's our comfort. I love the Scripture in Isaiah 62 that says He gives us a new name. It says no longer are we called desolate or deserted. You know, that's how Kary felt in his story. But God gives us a new name, and the new name is “My delight is in her.” “My delight is in him.” God delights in you, and He wants to come into your heart. He wants to heal the broken places. Give you His name. You're going to become his child. How do you do that? You receive it. And you let go of your control. You let go of the shame of your past. You let go of the things that keep Him from being able to come in and do the healing He wants to do. Let's pray together right now. Let's ask him for that for your life at this moment. Pray with me. “Jesus, I've heard your name before. I even know a little bit of the story of your life. But I have never really given you my life. I've never really understood that I need you. I need you not just to heal me, I need you to forgive me, that I am a sinner separated from you, and that you don't look at me with disdain because of that, you look at me with love and mercy and grace, inviting me to wholeness in you, and today I'm saying, ‘Jesus, forgive my sins. Be the savior of my soul.’ But I want more. I want all of you, and I want to give you all of me. Take my past. Take my pain. Take my shortcomings, my failures. my fear, my anger, my addictions. I'm just laying it all at your feet, and I'm saying, I can't do this anymore. I don't want to do this without you. Will you be the Lord of my life? I give you everything that I've got. All that I am, and I know that it's nothing. But will you take it and make something that matters out of my life? Will you take the ruins of my poor choices, the ruins of what's left of me, and make something that's eternally significant? I want to know your love, and I want to give you my love in return. So fill me with your Holy Spirit now. Teach me your ways. Change the way I think. Make me honest before you. Thank you for waiting for me. Thank you for loving me. Teach me how to receive it, and how to give it in return. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.” You have begun an amazing journey of living your life in and through, and for the Lord Jesus Christ who loves you tremendously. THIS WEEK IN OPERATION BLESSING LEE WEBB: Operation Blessing International is supplying shoes to children in Peru. Children in many poor communities run around barefoot, because their families cannot afford new shoes. So stepping on things like rusty nails is always a concern. Operation Blessing, though, teamed with Tom Shoes. Tom’s is a company that donates a pair of shoes for every pair purchased. Teams measured each child’s feet, then distributed a pair of shoes to every child in the community. In 10 Commandments, Moses starts walking out of Egypt, in the wrong direction. These are just examples of Hollywood not doing its homework. As you're about to see, you don't have to worry about those blunders when the new Superbook series. Take a look. SUPERBOOK HISTORICAL ACCURACY Superbook: I am taking you to meet a man who stood up for what he believed was right. WES RICKARDS: When you’re watching Superbook, you’re not just watching animated Bible stories. You’re also watching one of the most accurate portrayals of the ancient Middle East ever put into a cartoon. Gizmo: It appears we are in ancient Babylon, approximately 500 BC. WES RICKARDS: Every detail and every shot has been checked for historical accuracy from the clothes to the armor, even down to the tapestries in the background. If they didn’t have it back then, they’re not going to have it in Superbook. Darius the Great: What could possibly be so important? WES RICKARDS: Here’s an example. Take a look at this shot. It’s only up there for a few seconds, so if you blink, you might miss it. But that massive blue structure is called the “Ishtar Gate.” It was built by King Nebuchadnezzar in 575 BC and faithfully reconstructed by our Superbook animators 2500 years later. Now believe it or not, that gate is still around, only it’s not in Babylon anymore. It’s now standing in a museum in Germany. Our producer saw the gate and made sure that when we drew it, we had the right colors, the right size, and all those lions on the wall facing in the right direction. GORDON ROBERTSON: And the reason is we want to let children know that this is a real place and a real time, and this is an historical event that happened. WES RICKARDS: And it’s not just the backgrounds. Darius the Great: What is the meaning of this outrage? WES RICKARDS: Take this handsome fellow. His name is Darius the Great. He was the reigning monarch of the Persian empire between 522 and 486 BC. He’s believed to be the guy in charge of Babylon in the years after the Jewish exile, and he’s also thought to be the “Darius” referred to in the Book of Daniel. Darius the Great: You are wise above all men in my kingdom. WES RICKARDS: Well, we didn’t just draw him to sport the ZZ Topp beard, because it was cool. That’s actually the way he looked. Darius the Great: Even a king can be uncertain about what is right. GORDON ROBERTSON: The more historically accurate we can make them, the longer the series will last. WES RICKARDS: But it’s not just the look that’s important. The foundation of any Superbook episode is the Bible story, whether it’s “Daniel in the Lions Den” or “Moses” or “Creation.” We want to be sure that the story that’s being told by us matches up with the story being told in the Bible, even down to the dialogue which comes directly from the Scriptures. Male Character (Bowing down): Long live the king! GRAPHIC: DANIEL 6:22 (NLT) GORDON ROBERTSON and Daniel Character: My God sent His angel to shut the lion’s mouth so they would not hurt me, for I have been found innocent in His sight. Wes Rickards: Ultimately, the goal of Superbook is to teach kids around the world about the Bible. That’s why this series will be translated into 18 languages. We hope that in the next few years, 300 million children will hear stories from Genesis to Revelation from Superbook, and many of those kids will be hearing about the Bible for the first and only time through this program. That’s why we’re such a stickler for accuracy. We just added the talking Robot. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GORDON ROBERTSON: I love the latest episode, “Daniel.” It's being released today. TERRY MEEUWSEN: I want that one. Well, we've got time for some questions. Are you ready? GORDON ROBERTSON: Go ahead. TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is from our chat room. Evelyn says, “The Superbook trading card for Joseph, the father of Jesus, identifies him, or stepfather of Jesus, identifies him as a descendent of King David. In the book of Luke, it appears that Mary was also a descendent of King David. Do both sides of Jesus’ family have royal bloodlines, or is this a misprint on the trading card?” GORDON ROBERTSON: It’s not a misprint. Both sides. Mary and Joseph were probably distant cousins. But if you look in the book of Matthew in the first chapter, you'll find the genealogy that takes it to Joseph. Joseph was also a descendent of David. So you get them both, and that's one of the beautiful things about Superbook is it starts these kinds of questions. We're going to be coming up with family guides. We're working on a church curriculum. TERRY MEEUWSEN: The website is awesome, can I just say? GORDON ROBERTSON: Glad you like it. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Do you like to play games? No it is. GORDON ROBERTSON: Yeah, the website of Superbook.TV, if you want to go to that. Don't go to Superbook.com; that's a gambling site out of Vegas. But go to Superbook.TV, and there you'll find all the wonderful games, and there's a devotional. And we’re going to be posting the episode guides there as well. So, we're working on what I will call the “print side” of Superbook, and that will be ready by this summer. TERRY MEEUWSEN: God has a sense of humor. Jane says, “Gordon, I tried your soufflé recipe. It was beautiful, but a few minutes later, it started deflating. Did I do something wrong? It was still good, by the way.” GORDON ROBERTSON: Jane, you didn't do anything wrong. I like to say, soufflés wait for no man. There's a reason that you need to have everybody at the table and time it so that everyone is already sitting down waiting, and then you come out with the soufflé in the presentation. That way it doesn't have time to deflate before you stick a fork into it and start serving it. If it deflated, that just naturally happens. As soon as it starts coming out of the oven, and the heat’s no longer there, the hot air within it starts to escape. TERRY MEEUWSEN: She’s right, though. It doesn't change the flavor. GORDON ROBERTSON: Oh, no, it's still great. TERRY MEEUWSEN: It's delicious even after its deflated. GORDON ROBERTSON: I’ve even had reheated soufflé, which the French would say, “Oh you're barbarian.” TERRY MEEUWSEN: Oh, well. GORDON ROBERTSON: It was good. TERRY MEEUWSEN: It’s not the first time an American has been called a barbarian. Okay, Katie says, “I have a friend who is blind. I have faith that God can heal her, but she has lost hope. Ken got heal her through my faith, or does she have to believe God can heal her?” GORDON ROBERTSON: Katie, she can be healed through your faith. Here are a couple of examples. When Lazarus was raised from the dead, did he have faith? And the answer is no. Did anyone around have faith? His sister said, “But, Lord, he stinketh.” They were wondering, “you're being a little crazy here.” So, I think too often we say, is a faith of the individual who needs healing that makes the difference. No, it's a faith of people around. James Chapter 5, “Gather the elders. The prayer of faith will raise up the sick.” When you start getting that and start understanding that, that God can do all things, and with Him you can have all things, the sooner you get to that, the better. TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Emily who says, “After my parents died, he stopped going to church. Last month, his job forced him to move to the other side of the country. His boss isn't a Christian, and I doubt that he's going to find a brand-new church in a brand-new locale. I'm worried that he's going to fall away from the faith. I just don't know what I should do.” GORDON ROBERTSON: Emily, are you going with him? TERRY MEEUWSEN: It doesn't say. GORDON ROBERTSON: That would be the main question I've got. Are you going to do with them? If you're going to go with him, let your quiet influence, influence him to start attending church. I find specifically with men, one of the best things to do is to see if there is an activity the church is doing that he can participate in and be a part of. That's the best way to get men involved. If you expect people to show up in a pew on Sunday morning and sit there and listen to a sermon, men tend to want to do stuff and be active. TERRY MEEUWSEN: And also they tend to not want to go into that environment alone. So if you're married and you're going out there, if you're going bicoastal, and you're going to go out and visit him, you find the church and go with him, and it might open a door. GORDON ROBERTSON: Hold a hand. All right, we leave you with these words from Psalms 146 . . . . GRAPHIC: Psalm 146:9 “The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works.” (NKJV) “The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all his works.” For Terry, for me, for Lee, for all of us, God bless you. We'll see you again next week.
