UnderWing Transcripts PO Box 16282 Clearwater, Florida 33766 540 455-2333 / UnderWing@underwingtranscripts.com ________________________________________ The 700 Club Daily Broadcast Wednesday, October 14, 2009 PAT ROBERTSON: Well, welcome, ladies and gentlemen, and today is . . . . KRISTI WATTS: Your favorite day, which is Skinny Wednesday. PAT ROBERTSON: . . . . Skinny Wednesday. And we’re going to count down to a slimmer you with a workout called “4-3-2-1 Training.” That’s easy to remember. KRISTI WATTS: Exactly. And check this out, Pat. If you do the math, that actually adds up to ten. Ten minutes a day. That’s all it takes to get fit. That’s what our one guest says today. Sound too good to be true? Well, we’re going to find out for ourselves, and we’re going to ask him. PAT ROBERTSON: If it’s too good to be true, it is. But first, Rifqa Bary has been ordered back to Ohio by a Florida judge. Bary is the teenager who ran away from her Muslim family after she converted to Christianity. We have two reports, beginning in Florida, where Bary’s missing immigration papers could keep her there a little longer. Here is Wendy Griffith. BARY 1 WENDY GRIFFITH: A dramatic day in the case of the teenage runaway Rifqa Bary. Orlando Judge Daniel Dawson agreed with an Ohio judge that Bary should be sent back to Ohio almost immediately. But then it was discovered that her immigration papers still had not been sent by her parents. That brought into question whether she was actually in the US legally. Her attorney argued that if she is here illegally, that could put her in imminent danger of being sent back to her home country of Sri Lanka. John Stemberger (Rifqa Bary’s Attorney): The reason that Rifqa left is because her parents threatened to send her back to Sri Lanka. And this is the issue that nobody wants to talk about, but apostate killing is a very real thing. And she is most . . . . GRAPHIC: VOICE OF Shayan Elahi (Parents Attorney): Objection, Judge. At this point we are going into the anti-Muslim bias that's been basically dragging this through the last three months already. Judge Daniel Dawson: I’ll note your objection. Shayan Elahi: Judge . . . . Judge Daniel Dawson: Hold it. I’ll note your objection. Let him finish. John Stemberger: Judge, it's a very real thing. If she's sent back to Sri Lanka, it's probably the place she's most at risk of being killed or harmed or put in an insane asylum. And so this immigration issue is very, very critical. WENDY GRIFFITH: Judge Dawson agreed, saying he had grave concerns as to why those documents, including passports, visas and other information, had not been supplied to the court when they'd been ordered months ago. And when the attorney for the parents offered excuses, the judge wasn’t buying. Shayan Elahi: You listened to an oration about apostasy. Judge Daniel Dawson: Wait. Stop. Unless you want to be held in contempt and go out the other door, you need to just stop and listen to the court. All I want to know is how soon can you get the immigration paperwork to the court and to the GL, period. WENDY GRIFFITH: The judge ordered the immigration documents be sent within ten working days, or the parents will be held in contempt of court. He also ordered that the virtual schooling Rifqa has been receiving in Florida continue in Ohio. Friends and supporters of Rifqa say they are thrilled that she'll be staying in Florida a little longer than expected. Many believe she is safer here than in Ohio. And some who have talked to her say whatever her fate, she’s ready. Jamal Jivanjee (Rifqa Bary’s Friend): Right before Rifqa fled Ohio, she said, “Pray for me that I would not deny Jesus Christ in the face of death.” That was her heart. Now many of us have had to face that. She's one of the few in this country that have had to look death in the face, and she's prepared for it. WENDY GRIFFITH: So for now, Judge Dawson says Rifqa Bary is not going anywhere until those important immigration papers are presented to the court. And that makes many of her supporters very happy. Wendy Griffith, CBN News, Orlando. BARY 2 EFREM GRAHAM: This is Efrem Graham in Columbus, Ohio, where attorneys are under a gag order, but Rifqa Bary's friends are talking, and they aren't happy. Robert Ng (Rifqa’s Friend): Not really good. It would be best if she stayed in Florida. EFREM GRAHAM: Robert Ng lives about a mile from Rifqa Bary's suburban Columbus home. The young Christians met less than a year ago, attended prayer meetings together and talked nearly every day until she ran away more than two months ago. Robert Ng: I have Skyped her while she is in Florida. She is still on Facebook under her name. And I message her on there. EFREM GRAHAM: Ng also prayed with Rifqa and talked about the possibility of her return to Columbus, even before Tuesday’s court ruling. Robert Ng; With talking to her before today, she kind of knew that she would have to. She prayed that she didn't, but she got the feeling that she would be coming back. EFREM GRAHAM (Interviewing): Do you think she is worried about coming back? Robert Ng: I wouldn't use the word “worry,” but I think she knows that coming back here is more dangerous than her staying Florida. EFREM GRAHAM (Reporting): That is a fear members of this Columbus mosque, the Noor Islamic Center, have called unwarranted. Adnan Mirza (Noor Islamic Center): On YouTube, when you see the stuff, the excerpts with her about the interview and how she claims things, she is very passionate. And you can definitely sense that she is scared. But the reasons for this, those are the things that we are completely just dumbfounded on. We have no idea where those things are coming from. EFREM GRAHAM: For now, the courts are siding with members of the Islamic community and Rifqa’s parents, with an order for her to return to Ohio, where she’ll be temporarily in foster care. Though a Florida judge ordered Rifqa Bary return here to Columbus, Ohio, that move will not happen overnight. There are still a number issues that must be settled. A hearing is now set here at Franklin County Juvenile Court October 27th. In Columbus, Ohio, Efrem Graham, CBN News. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * KRISTI WATTS: Just watching some of those different reports, it’s disconcerting. And it’s disconcerting on so many different areas. And even when they were sitting there talking about if she does get to go to Ohio, she’s got to go into foster care. Yes. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, what is her crime? She accepted Jesus as her Savior and became a Christian. And so we have got to uphold the Muslim thought that somebody who does that is a, quote, “apostate,” and should be killed. That’s the feeling. Well, anyhow, it’s going to work out. Pray for Rifqa. Well, Lee Webb has the rest of our top stories from the CBN Newsroom. Lee. HEALTH LEE WEBB: Pat, Senate and House negotiators are sitting behind closed doors now to come up with a compromise health care bill. Both chambers have passed their versions of the bill with only one Republican vote. But putting together a bill that will gain enough Democrat votes won’t be easy. Erick Stakelbeck looks at the vote on the Senate version and the roadblocks ahead. ERICK STAKELBECK: The Senate Finance Committee approved the bill by a 14 to nine vote. Only one of those 14, however, was a Republican: Olympia Snowe of Maine. Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine): Is this bill all that I would want? Far from it. Is it all that it can be? No. But when history calls, history calls. ERICK STAKELBECK: Snowe is the only Republican in either the House or Senate to support the bill, which was written by Democratic Senator Max Baucus. Despite the lack of bipartisan support, President Obama called the Senate Finance Committee vote an historic milestone. President Barack Obama: Now is not the time to offer ourselves congratulations, now is the time to dig in and work even harder to get this done. ERICK STAKELBECK: The bill would require Americans without health insurance to pay up to 1,900 dollars per family. It would prohibit denial of coverage due to pre-existing conditions and provide subsidies to families with incomes under 88,000 dollars. It would also slash an estimated 400 billion dollars from Medicare spending and raise taxes by another 400 billion. The bill would cost 829 billion dollars over ten years. It does not include a government-run health care option. Labor unions have said they'll oppose it unless the public option is added, and leading Democrats are voicing their concerns as well. Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-West Virginia): We are not doing what we set out to do. It is a step in the right direction, but it is not enough. ERICK STAKELBECK: Now the bill moves behind closed doors for intense negotiations. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid plans to combine it with another more liberal bill and put it before the House floor for a very tough fight in the next two weeks. And Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell says those closed door negotiations will produce a bill that will be, quote, “another 1,000 page, trillion dollar Washington takeover. We know it will slash a half trillion dollars from seniors’ Medicare, add new taxes and raise premiums. That’s not reform.” The major battle over the final bill is likely to be the public option. The Democrats are deeply divided on that issue now, and crossing that divide may be the key to passing any health care reform. Erick Stakelbeck, CBN News, Washington. LEE WEBB: Pat, what do you think about Olympia Snowe’s yes vote? She seems pretty intent that she’s not going to go along with a public option at the end of the day. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, Olympia Snowe is on the left. She’s been on the left. She is a Republican in name only, and her voting record has pretty much been with the Democrats. So this is no surprise that she’s moved over. But this is anything but bipartisan. This is not bipartisan at all. It is 100 percent a Democratic bill. It is a taxing bill. And can you imagine knocking 400 billion dollars out of Medicare and making that stick? Not on your life will the seniors and the people who receive Medicare go along with that. Plus, they’re going to add 400 billion in new taxes. And the truth is that this thing is not going to cost a trillion dollars. It’s going to cost closer to 2.5 trillion over ten years, and it’s going to add to our ballooning deficit. But the people in Washington don’t seem to care. They don’t seem to care about fiscal sanity. They don’t seem to care about the integrity of the United States dollar. And they’re allowing us to become like a Banana Republic. And other nations around the world are saying the United States can’t get its act together. It’s profligate and wasteful, and there is no discipline. And Heaven help us down the road when the other nations of the world turn against us. Lee. CHINA SAVINGS LEE WEBB: China's Foreign Exchange Reserves have a hit a new record. China's government says it has nearly 2.3 trillion dollars in foreign assets. That's the largest in the world. The news comes as the US keeps building up its own debt. One analyst tells Bloomberg News, “It's the old bargain: the US financing its spending by borrowing from China.” China owns more than 800 billion dollars of US Treasury debt. Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: China is extraordinary. But, ladies and gentlemen, what happened, I was reading yesterday about what happened right after World War II to Great Britain, which was the greatest power on earth. It was the global leader. And the British were overextended. They were going broke. And so they came to the US, and they said, “We want to borrow five billion dollars at zero percent interest for 50 years.” And they assumed the US would say, “Sure, you’re our buddies, and here’s a check.” Instead of that, the United States said, “No way. We’ll loan you about three billion dollars, and it’s going to have conditions on it that in your empire you change the way you do business with the members of your alliance of nations, the British Empire.” And in doing that, we, the United States, forced Great Britain into a second class status. And the United States became number one. Well, the time will come when the Chinese can do exactly the same thing to us. They are friendly. They’re not trying to hurt us. But from economics, they can do what we did to the Brits. They can say, “You want money? You want to borrow money? We hold all of your dollars, and we insist on the following: A, B, C and D.” And the next thing you know, they’re running our country. Lee. FOX V WHITE HOUSE LEE WEBB: Pat, members of the news media, including liberal commentators, are blasting the White House for its decision to treat Fox News as, quote, “an opponent.” CNN political analyst David Gergen call it “a risky strategy, and it's not one that I would advocate.” Some liberals support the White House, but John Nichols of the left-wing opinion magazine The Nation writes, “As for the Obama Administration, there is a word for what the President and his aides are doing. That word is ‘whining.’ And nothing does more damage to Obama's credibility or authority than the sense that a popular President is becoming the Whiner-in-Chief.” Baltimore Sun columnist David Zurawik is not a fan of Fox News, but he writes, “This campaign by the Obama Administration is dangerous to press freedom, and it should concern everyone in the press, not just Fox. You have to wonder who else is on the administration's enemies list.” Yes, you do have to wonder that, Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. Obama has gotten a pass from the media. And they say the media has been in the tank for Obama since the election. He’s been considered like a messiah, almost like God. And now all of a sudden, God has feet of clay. And once the media turns against you, it’s “Katy, bar the door.” They’re going to be on his case all the time. This was one of the most stupid moves they could possibly have made, and they made it. But there are some other things stupid they’re doing, so this is going to compound it. But they won’t have the press in their corner like they have in the past, it seems like to me, because regardless of whether the people of the press agree with conservative news or not, they still can agree with news. They don’t want a politician attacking a news organization. Lee. OBESITY AND DAY CARE LEE WEBB: Daycare could be the next frontier in the fight against childhood obesity. A new Harvard study finds that only a few states require specific nutrition and physical activity for children under the age of five in daycare. Now health specialists are recommending that other states need to follow those states’ leads before children form bad eating habits. One report last spring found that 20 percent of four-year-olds in this country are already obese. And those rates are highest among American Indian, Hispanic and black children. Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Children are under the control of their parents when they’re one, two, three, four years old. They can’t just go to the grocery store or some fast food place and buy food. They can’t do it. They’ve got to eat what their parents give them. KRISTI WATTS: Exactly. But then, look, the kids are reflective of the parents. Go to a mall, Pat. If you walk in a mall, it’s like, “People, you need to start walking and running outside.” I’m starting to sound like you. PAT ROBERTSON: No, you wouldn’t want to do that. Well, it’s an epidemic, ladies and gentlemen. Something has got to be done about it. We’re going to talk today about the 1-2-3-4-5, whatever the plan is. KRISTI WATTS: I know. Working out. That’s the whole key. PAT ROBERTSON: Working out. All right. KRISTI WATTS: It’s all about a balance. Well, we’ve had enough stories and many stories about health care. Why? Because that’s what we’re concerned about. Well, up next, a shortage of doctors and a surplus of patients. Doctor: People are going to have to wait. That’s the simple fact, that people are going to have to wait to even get in to see me. I’m backlogged already. KRISTI WATTS: See what’s behind this demand for doctors and how it could affect your health, after this. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 1: GOLDLINE Jay Johnson (Former Director US Mint): All you have to do is read a newspaper or watch TV to know our investments and our savings have lost value in this tough economy. And no one knows how long this will last. Hi, I’m Jay Johnson, former director of the US Mint. I supervised our nation’s gold supply, and I’m often asked why I buy gold. I buy gold because it helps protect against inflation and huge government spending. Gold offers diversity in a bad economy, and it’s a safe haven asset that has never dropped to zero. In fact, did you know gold prices have tripled since 2001 and may reach new record highs because of inflation and the falling dollar? Make gold part of your portfolio. Woman: We could have a relationship, and they’d have to go home. LEE WEBB: . . . . except her own. Woman: No one was going to tell me what to do. LEE WEBB: How one fight nearly cost this home-wrecker her life . . . . Woman: And I tried to put my foot in the trigger. I had both barrels in my mouth. LEE WEBB: . . . . and how another saved it. * * * GRAPHIC: DIAMOND RIO LEE WEBB: Plus, a live performance from country music sensation Diamond Rio. Tomorrow on The 700 Club. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: Well, in the United States, we’re facing a frightening shortage of doctors. They’re leaving the field at a time when Americans are getting older and need more health care. Millions of uninsured people may soon flood the system. The new healthcare bill will only exacerbate the problem. Lori Johnson has this story. FOCUS: DOCTOR SHORTAGE LORIE JOHNSON: In the ‘60s, America’s 80 million baby boomers wanted change. Now that they’re older, they want medical care. But as the song goes, you can’t always get what you want. Why? As boomers get older and retire, so do their doctors. An estimated 250,000 will turn in their stethoscopes in the next decade. And there aren’t enough new doctors to take their place. The doctor shortage began in the 1970s when the Institute of Medicine and other national advisory groups incorrectly predicted a doctor surplus. So medical schools capped enrollments, which remained flat through 2005. Meanwhile, however, the American population grew by 70 million people. Medicine's gatekeepers, the family doctors, are fighting a losing battle. As their numbers shrink, the number of future patients is exploding. Dr. Phillip Snider (Family Practice): If we continue the way we're doing now, definitely we'll have longer wait times in the waiting room, shorter times with the doctor, because we're constantly being told, “You need to see more patients in the same amount of time,” and yet we have more paperwork to do that pulls us away. LORIE JOHNSON: Medical schools striving to admit more students are reporting their largest freshman class ever, nearly 18,000. That is a good start, but they won't be finished with training for another ten years. And even then, don’t expect to see them becoming family doctors. The number of med students going into family practice is down more than 51 percent, mainly because of pay. Jason Wagner (Medical School): Medical school tuition is relatively expensive compared to college. And the average income now for a family practitioner is between 120,000 and 170,000 dollars a year, which might seem like a lot in the general mindset of a career in the United States, but when you’re looking at all the debt that you've taken up, and you owe a quarter million dollars by the time you're said and done with college and medical school, it's kind of hard to try and figure out a way to pay that back. LORIE JOHNSON: Family doctors make less because they are mostly decision-makers. The real money is in procedures. One solution is to rely more on physician assistants or nurse practitioners who can handle routine visits. Tom Hare (Physician Assistant): Patients come in and they've always only seen the physician, and they're a little bit confused sometimes. And that's a trust issue. But as they gain familiarity and trust with the PA, those issues go away. LORIE JOHNSON: Primary care physicians are increasingly difficult to find anywhere, but the doctor shortage is most critical here in rural America, where all types of doctors are in short supply. Virginia's Eastern Shore is made up mainly of people who earn a modest living harvesting crab, fish and oysters from the Chesapeake Bay, as well as tomatoes, corn and soybeans from the fertile farmland. There is also only one orthopedic surgeon servicing the entire area. Dr. Bradley Burkovich (Orthopedic Surgeon): Most orthopedic surgeons aren't going into rural areas. There is a shortage of orthopedic surgeons right now in the United States of America. LORIE JOHNSON: Those who do stay usually do so because they like the environment. Their patients appreciate not having to drive long distances for lifesaving care. Arlene Frisch (Patient): It's very important to me, because I have a lot of health problems, that I have someplace that I’ve got to get to immediately. LORIE JOHNSON: But if she must visit a hospital, she may face a long wait. That’s because rural hospitals struggle to attract doctors, because there is less money than in the cities. Joseph Zager (Administrator, Riverside Shore Mem. Hosp.): The government, when they instituted the current payment system for Medicare patients back in '84, they paid rural communities significantly less than urban communities, and that caused rural communities to fall behind a little bit. LORIE JOHNSON: The last part of this perfect storm is the current health care reform movement. It could add millions of uninsured to a system already bursting at the seams. Dr. Bradley Burkovich: I'm already seeing 60 patients a day. Where are we going to put these patients? The family practice doctors who also have a shortage, that refer to me, it's going to be a bottleneck. And so these people are going have to wait. That’s the simple fact, that people are going have to wait to even get in to see me. I'm backlogged already. LORIE JOHNSON: Clear evidence that any final prescription for the country's healthcare system must address the nation's demand for doctors. Lorie Johnson, CBN News. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: Thanks, Lorie. A great report. And ladies and gentlemen, a frightening thought. But Congress can say, “Well, we’re going to force people into these various HMOs and into these various insurance plans.” Well, that’s cool, but if there are no doctors at the other end, woo-wee. KRISTI WATTS: Exactly. And especially the doctors are feeling like their hands are tied behind their backs because of what they can give to the patient. PAT ROBERTSON: That’s right. And so Congress is going to say, “We want to double your caseload,” and there are not enough doctors. And they’re not planning that the law of unintended consequences is getting ready to reach up and bite us in the rear. Kristi. KRISTI WATTS: I don’t know what to say after that, so I’m going to throw to the next thing. PAT ROBERTSON: Thank you very much. Go on. KRISTI WATTS: Up next on Skinny Wednesday, well, we’ve got your e-mail questions. Martha says, “I recently saw an article claiming that canola oil is a toxic substance that can actually cause everything from asthma to heart disease. Is that true?” KRISTI WATTS: Well, Martha, we’re going to Bring It On with your questions and so much more, after this, so don’t go away. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOT 2A: AMMED NICOLE Nicole Johnson: Hi, I’m Nicole Johnson, Miss America 1999. It’s time for your e-mail questions. This is your opportunity to either log on to CBN.com or call in, whatever you want, and just ask Pat a question. You ready? PAT ROBERTSON: I’ll let you know after you ask me the question. What do we have? KRISTI WATTS: Okay, here we go. Martha writes in, and she says, “I recently saw an article claiming that canola oil is a toxic substance that can cause everything from asthma to heart disease. Is that true?” PAT ROBERTSON: Well, Martha, they make canola oil out of something called rapeseed. It just sounds horrible to think you’re getting raped when you’re drinking some canola oil, so people stay away from it. But the truth is, the oil that is used in canola oil, the rapeseed, is processed so it has just a little fraction of the bad things that are in normal rape seed. But they do have some substances in normal rapeseed oil that could cause some of these things that you talk about. But the stuff that you get in the store under the label canola oil, as far as I can tell, is okay. KRISTI WATTS: I tell you, but you know what kind of gets on my nerves? PAT ROBERTSON: What’s that? KRISTI WATTS: You can’t really have canola oil. You can’t really have butter. You can have a little bit of olive oil, but not too much. Good Lord, what can we have? PAT ROBERTSON: Well, you can have a lot of olive oil. It’s good for your heart. Go ahead. What else? KRISTI WATTS: All right. I’m not going to complain today. PAT ROBERTSON: Okay. KRISTI WATTS: Mona writes in and Mona says, “I’m a physically active and perfectly healthy woman, but I’m two inches shorter than I used to be. Is it normal to shrink with age?” PAT ROBERTSON: Mona, I hate to tell you, dear, but it’s true. Yes. We get older, we shrink. The bones shrink a little bit and the connections between the bones shrink just a little bit. So for every ten years, you’ll lose a couple of inches. So one of the ways to stop that is to do vigorous exercise, weight bearing exercise, stretching exercises and so forth. KRISTI WATTS: And build up the muscle around the bones. That could kind of . . . . PAT ROBERTSON: All that. But you have women particularly with osteoporosis. And my goodness, the bones begin to crumble and you’ve got the hunchback, the widow’s hump, and all that. But it’s very, very painful. So you’ve got to work on that. Don’t let that happen to you. KRISTI WATTS: Yes. Okay, I just recently did something where I went into my cabinets and my pantry, and I through out everything that had high fructose corn syrup, MSG, other stuff that I can’t think of right now. PAT ROBERTSON: You didn’t have anything left, did you? KRISTI WATTS: Didn’t have Ella who? PAT ROBERTSON: You didn’t have anything left. KRISTI WATTS: Oh, anything left. PAT ROBERTSON: Ella who? KRISTI WATTS: I thought that was a new thing. No, I really didn’t. PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. You threw it all away. KRISTI WATTS: I threw it all away. Well, I ended up—I don’t know if I should say this, but I ended up putting it in bags and giving it to my local church. Not that I wanted the church to . . . . PAT ROBERTSON: Oh, that’s good. KRISTI WATTS: Well, I didn’t want to throw it away. PAT ROBERTSON: You’ll make the poor sick. All right. KRISTI WATTS: Anyway, I’m leading into my next question from Dot, who says, “We checked our pantry recently and found 12 different types of food containing high fructose corn syrup, everything from cereal to soups. Now I’m seeing commercials that say all sugars are the same. Is this true or is high fructose corn syrup really not good for you?” PAT ROBERTSON: No, it’s not good for you. And the reason is the composition. It has a longer shelf life than sugar. That’s why people go for it. But high fructose corn syrup stays in your body a little longer than sugar, because it can’t be burned that fast. It will go to fat. So you’ll build up fat because of it. It will affect your insulin levels, and it can have devastating effects on your whole being. And what’s happened is we have corrupted a whole nation with high fructose corn syrup, because you can get it in bread, get it in cereals. You can get it in probably . . . . KRISTI WATTS: Ketchup. That’s what I was looking at, ketchup and soup. PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. Ketchup. Loaded. KRISTI WATTS: Yes. PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. And all kinds of barbecue sauce. KRISTI WATTS: Everything. Yes. And my normal syrup, my Aunt Jemima. Or not my Aunt Jemima, my Mrs. Butterworth. I love that syrup. It was in that. I said, “I can’t give up my Butterworth.” PAT ROBERTSON: Yes, you can. KRISTI WATTS: My Aunt Jemima. PAT ROBERTSON: Get what’s up in Vermont. Get some pure maple syrup. But it’s dangerous, and yet it’s in everything. And it’s one of those things the Food and Drug Administration hasn’t done anything about. But that’s one of the reasons we’ve got this obesity epidemic. It’s because of high fructose corn syrup. KRISTI WATTS: Exactly. PAT ROBERTSON: So read the labels carefully. All right. KRISTI WATTS: Exactly. All right, here’s one from Jerry. Jerry writes in and says, “My blood pressure seems to be very low, but it doesn’t appear to be causing any symptoms. Is it possible that I have low blood pressure that’s too low?” PAT ROBERTSON: Jerry, it will only be too low if you find yourself fatigued and listless and you don’t have anything much going on, and you’re having a hard time concentrating. If that’s the case, then you need to pick up your blood pressure. The normal is 120 over 80. But the big danger is high blood pressure, not low blood pressure. So you can get away with something that is a little bit lower than that. My blood pressure, when I had that operation . . . . KRISTI WATTS: Yes. What was it? PAT ROBERTSON: I lost five units of blood, and they didn’t know where it went. And a day or two later, I was doing something, and the blood pressure, my wife said it was 80 over 30. And that’s like death. KRISTI WATTS: Oh, my goodness! PAT ROBERTSON: And she was quite alarmed. But thank goodness they got it all back again. But your blood pressure . . . . KRISTI WATTS: Wow. PAT ROBERTSON: . . . . . low blood pressure, when you’re a few points off, it’s not going to hurt you. As a matter of fact, it’s probably a good thing to have lower rather than high, unless you begin to affect the way you live and the way you feel about life. Then you’ve got to do something about it. KRISTI WATTS: Absolutely. Oh, my goodness, Pat. Did you see the white light? Did you run away from the white light? PAT ROBERTSON: I embraced the white light. It’s time. I’m ready. KRISTI WATTS: Don’t go toward the white light. Come back. All right. PAT ROBERTSON: No, I didn’t see any light or anything, but I wasn’t aware of what was going on. But it was a touch and go situation. KRISTI WATTS: Well, praise God you’re back. PAT ROBERTSON: That’s why I’m back so healthy. KRISTI WATTS: You are. PAT ROBERTSON: And ready to go. KRISTI WATTS: And just as spicy as ever. PAT ROBERTSON: Every one. KRISTI WATTS: All right. Here we have a question. This is interesting: “I often have problems sleeping at night. Sometimes I’ll have to get some sleep during the day just to feel normal. Some of my friends say you can’t catch up on lost sleep and trying does more damage than good. Can you really catch up on sleep?” PAT ROBERTSON: Yes, you can really catch up on sleep. You can do it. There is no mystery about sleeping at night. If you can sleep in the afternoon, good for you. But it really, I recommend that you take melatonin. Start two or three milligrams of melatonin. See what it does for you. It’s a perfectly natural health substance to induce sleep. The other thing is magnesium. You want magnesium and you want calcium. And if you can have a mix of magnesium and calcium, it will help you to sleep. But don’t worry about the fact that, hey, you’re sleeping from three to five. How many people in Spain and in the tropics have a siesta? KRISTI WATTS: A siesta. PAT ROBERTSON: Yes. That’s part of their life. KRISTI WATTS: Listen, brother, I’m all about the siesta. I wish we had it here. I will adopt it here. I will become Spanish for the siesta. PAT ROBERTSON: Si, senorita. Okay. But the siesta is okay. They sleep, and they sit up partying until 12 or one o’clock. Then they sleep for a few hours, get up and do a little bit of work. KRISTI WATTS: I’m with you. PAT ROBERTSON: Okay. KRISTI WATTS: Okay. Well, speaking of being with you, we’re going to transition real quick. We have something really fun for you. Coming up, fitness at the speed of life. A federal judge in California will consider whether to throw out a trial on Proposition 8. The trial is scheduled for January. Last November, California voters approved the proposition, which defines marriage as between one man and one woman. But opponents have challenged that vote. They argue that Prop 8 denies gay couples equal protection. In court today, Prop 8 supporters will try to argue that there is no need for a trial, based on Supreme Court precedent and the historical definition of marriage. WILDERS VICTORY LEE WEBB: A victory in British court for Dutch politician Geert Wilders. A British tribunal has ruled that the British government was wrong to deny Wilders entry into the UK. Wilders made a movie about Islamic violence and was invited to show it to the British House of Lords in February. But the government refused to allow him in, claiming he was a threat to public order. Wilders went ahead with the trip and was turned back by immigration officials at Heathrow Airport. Wilders now says he plans to travel to Britain soon. Well, what if you could get fit in just ten minutes a day and never have to repeat the same workout ever? Well, watch, and we’ll see. SET-UP PIECE KRISTI WATTS: Between work, grocery shopping and cooking dinner, most people are just too busy to squeeze in a daily workout in their schedule. Fitness trainer Sean Foy came up with the Ten Minute Total Body Workout. Sean Foy: 4-3-2-1 Body Training is designed for the busy, on-the-go person who has minimal time, but wants to maximize their weight loss. KRISTI WATTS: Sean’s program combines interval training with a balanced no-diet diet. So you can take ten minutes a day to develop a new you. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GUEST: SEAN FOY KRISTI WATTS: So please welcome to The 700 Club Sean Foy. Thank you so much for being here, Sean. Sean Foy: Hi, Kristi. Thank you. KRISTI WATTS: Good to see you. Sean Foy: Thanks for having me. KRISTI WATTS: Okay, so let me just ask you. Ten minutes a day. For real? Sean Foy: Absolutely. Yes. The challenges trainers, typically we’re telling people longer duration, stay in your fat burning zone. The problem is none of us are moving. Most Americans are not exercising. Motion affects emotion. So we began to put this fast fitness formula together, just ten minutes. And the results have been absolutely dramatic. KRISTI WATTS: Now, one of the keys to your ten minutes is like, what, short bursts of energy? What is it? Sean Foy: Yes. What we’re going to talk about is interval training. And we’re finding that interval training actually accelerates our metabolic rate. In fact, you can lose nine times more body fat performing interval training compared to slow aerobic exercise. Yes. KRISTI WATTS: Listen, I’m all about that, brother. So tell me. Now, you have something called, what, 4-3-2-1? Sean Foy: Yes. Yes, it’s a circuit. It’s a ten minute circuit. So the first part of it is four minutes of interval training. We call it HEAT, high energy aerobic training. Then three minutes of resistance training, which is for upper and lower body. Two minutes for core, which is your abdominals, your hip and your lower back. And then one minute of deep breathing and stretching, and you’re done. KRISTI WATTS: A day. Sean Foy: A day. KRISTI WATTS: And that totals up to be ten minutes. Sean Foy: That’s correct. Exactly. KRISTI WATTS: All right, Sean. Prove it, brother. Prove it. Sean Foy: Okay, okay. KRISTI WATTS: Let’s do this. Sean Foy: So you can do this at home. And what I’m going to show you is an office workout. This is something you can do in the office. So we’re going to actually sit down at the end of our chair. And if you’re at home, you can do this with us. We’re going to do a motion called chair jogging. Okay, so what I’d like you to do is just simulate your arms moving. Now, you could do this on a treadmill. You can do this on an elliptical machine or a bike. The idea is to move your body slowly for about 30 seconds. And then we’re going to race. You and I are going to race for 30 seconds. KRISTI WATTS: So I’m competing against you, Sean. Sean Foy: You ready? KRISTI WATTS: Brother, I will win. Sean Foy: Okay. Set and go. Pump those arms. Go, go, go, go. Good, good, good. I like the face. Good job. Go, Kristi, go. There we go, there we go, there we go. Good job. And relax. Now, now keep moving. Don’t stop now. Now, we’re going to bring our feet into it. KRISTI WATTS: All right. I’m all about it. Sean Foy: So the idea is 30 seconds slow, 30 seconds fast, for four minutes. Okay, you ready now? KRISTI WATTS: Once again, I’m going to beat you, Sean. Sean Foy: Now, when we get to the finish line, I want to see you lean forward. Okay, you ready? KRISTI WATTS: No problem. Here we go. Sean Foy: Set and go. Pump those arms and those feet. Come on. Go, go, go, Kristi. That’s good. Good, good. Now, you can do this anywhere, right? You can do this at home. Good job. KRISTI WATTS: This is like a lot of eye-hand coordination. Sean Foy: It may look funny, but that movement is more movement than most Americans get in a daytime. KRISTI WATTS: Because, what, is it the short burst of energy? It gets your heart rate up? Sean Foy: Yes. The interval training has been shown to not only affect your metabolic rate during the exercise, but long after the exercise. That’s the key, really is the key. KRISTI WATTS: Well, I’ve got to tell you, that kind of got me out of breath for a second. Sean Foy: Yes. You feel it? KRISTI WATTS: For a second. Sean Foy: Okay, so then without rest, you’re going to go to your resistance training. We’re going to use resistance tubing first. I’m going to show you an exercise that uses upper and lower body. Go ahead and take the tubing, place it underneath your feet. Go ahead and spread your feet a little bit wider than shoulder width. We’re going to do an arm curl first, then we’re going to sit down into a squat. We’re going to stand up and then into a press. KRISTI WATTS: Cool. Sean Foy: This is a great exercise. Go ahead and lower down. You could do this with dumbbells if you wanted to. KRISTI WATTS: And it’s about constant moving, so you never want to . . . . Sean Foy: Exactly. Yes. Remember that squat, that squat? That a girl. Up into a press. KRISTI WATTS: And the thing that’s great is it’s like you guys are working . . . . Sean Foy: One more time. There you go. Curl. I mean, down. That a girl. And then up and press. KRISTI WATTS: I think you’ve got to talk, because I don’t think I can talk and do that at the same time. Sean Foy: You’re doing great. Now, that’s an example of an upper and lower body movement. Very efficient. And we’re going to do now, let’s do a movement with dumbbells that works the upper and lower body. We’re going to do a side shoulder raise lunge. So I’m going to have you place your left foot forward, right foot back. KRISTI WATTS: So how many of these are we doing, since the whole total workout . . . . Sean Foy: You’ll do it for one minute. So this exercise would be one minute. We’re going to raise our arms out to the side and then go down in a lunge. Very good. Excellent. Just like that. We’ve got two legs, so let’s go to the other side. KRISTI WATTS: All right. Here we go. Sean Foy: Other way, same thing, lowering down. Perfect. Just like that. KRISTI WATTS: Got the form. Sean Foy: Now, this helps the lower body as well as the upper body. KRISTI WATTS: Yes. And the one thing that everyone needs to remember is never to extend your knee over your toe, right? Sean Foy: That’s right. Exactly. You want to make sure the knee is midline of the foot. But it’s a simple movement, but you can feel your heart rate. KRISTI WATTS: Yes. That’s why I’m letting you talk, Sean. Sean Foy: Now, I want to show you another movement. This is something you can do in your office. All you need is a chair. We’re going to go ahead and put our chairs together here. Excellent. This is called a chair plank. So I’d like you to place your hands . . . . KRISTI WATTS: And this is going to work our core. Sean Foy: This works your core, your abdominal region. It also works the backside and the lower back. KRISTI WATTS: Now, why is it so important for our core to be tight as well as we do this? Sean Foy: Think about the movements we do throughout the day. We’re always twisting and moving. And, believe it or not, if you want to lose ten pounds, your appearance, your posture, the taller you are, the stronger you are, the better your appearance looks and your posture looks. So you can change your appearance dramatically by strengthening your core. KRISTI WATTS: I’m all about that. Okay. Sean Foy: So we’re going to lean into each other. Very good. Now, you can put your chair against a wall when you’re doing this. Now, engage your muscles. Tighten your abdominal muscles. KRISTI WATTS: They’re engaged. Sean Foy: Good. Now, what I want you to do is raise your left leg. KRISTI WATTS: My left. Okay. Sean Foy: And tighten your buttocks and just hold that position. Now, you would hold this for approximately 30 seconds. Okay, then we’re going to lower down. Same thing, other leg. KRISTI WATTS: And don’t forget to breathe. Sean Foy: Yes. Make sure you’re breathing comfortably. KRISTI WATTS: I am scared this chair is going to go flying, Sean. Sean Foy: No. I won’t let go. Now, we’re going to do a pushup. You want to try that pushup? KRISTI WATTS: Let’s do the pushup. Sean Foy: Okay, now, you can just lower yourself down and press. Good job. Now, again, simple movements that you can do. Then the next movement we’re going to do is for our core. So for one minute, you would do that plank. Now we’re going to do a side bend. What you want to do here, sit up, right, nice and tall, shoulders back, hands down at your side. What I want you to think of doing is lowering your right hand down to the ground. Good. KRISTI WATTS: And what is this doing? Sean Foy: This is stretching, but it’s also working the oblique muscles, right here on the side. KRISTI WATTS: Okay. Got you. Sean Foy: Come back to middle and over to the side. KRISTI WATTS: You hit that one little roll of fat. Sean Foy: No, no, you’re pretty tight there. KRISTI WATTS: Did you feel the muscle? Sean Foy: Yes, it felt pretty tight. KRISTI WATTS: You felt the muscle, Sean? Sean Foy: I did. KRISTI WATTS: Fabulous. Sean Foy: Again, go down. Very good. Now, you can feel your back stretching here. KRISTI WATTS: I do. Sean Foy: You could do this watching television. And with stretching, you do some stretches. Stretch your hamstring. And you’re done. KRISTI WATTS: Well, I’ve got to tell you, I’m absolutely loving this. I love sitting in the chair, because it makes it actually easier. Who knew? Who knew? Ten minutes a day. Sean, thank you so much. The book is called The 10-Minute Total Body Breakthrough. I might have to try it out. It’s available nationwide. And I think if you want some more information, you can also log on to CBN.com as well. Sean, thank you so much. Sean Foy: Thank you, Kristi. Good job. KRISTI WATTS: I’m digging it. Sean Foy: Good job. KRISTI WATTS: All right. I did my workout for the day. Sean Foy: There you go. KRISTI WATTS: Praise God. Sean Foy: Amen. KRISTI WATTS: Pat, over to you. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, it sure beats two hours in the gym. That’s fantastic. But his career didn’t take off right away. Then Monty found a way to improve his game by taking advice from his wife. MONTY WILLIAMS ANDREW KNOX: Portland Trailblazers’ assistant coach Monty Williams is a great mentor for young NBA players. He spent nearly a decade playing in the league. The 6’8” small forward was forced into retirement due to chronic knee problems and has been able to stay in the game he loves serving as a coach. But not all of his life lessons were learned on the basketball court. Monty says one of the biggest lessons he learned was from his wife, Ingrid. Monty Williams: I would say even before we were married, in college, I watched her tithe. And I would just look at her like, “You got to be kidding me.” Ingrid Williams: My father was a preacher. He would always say, “You give ten percent. You take out ten percent.” So I would calculate. If I had 20 dollars, I would give two. If I made 50 dollars, I would give five. And it was just something that was ingrained in my brothers and I from the beginning. Monty Williams: What I saw in my wife changed my life. And I started to realize I was missing out on a huge blessing. ANDREW KNOX: At the time, Monty was struggling with his game. Monty Williams: My career was just up and down, a lot of talent, really not consistent. I’d have a few weeks of playing well, and then I’d have a half a season where I was just really non-existent. ANDREW KNOX: Monty decided it was time to make giving a priority in his own life, and the Bible served as his guide. Monty Williams: I just began to dig in the scriptures and really trust God with not only my career, but my finances, my marriage, my relationships, and things started to change. ANDREW KNOX: His career started turning a new direction. Monty Williams: When I started tithing, my career started to be more consistent. I began to find my niche in the league. And before I knew it, the respect level for my game had risen. Doc Rivers had already started to see me as a coach. And I was in my fifth year in the league, and he was like, “Mont, you’re going to be a coach someday.” Ingrid Williams: Spiritually, he’s grown. As a father, he’s grown. God has just redeemed time for him. ANDREW KNOX: As the giving grew, Monty wanted to make sure they were giving to an organization that would use the money wisely. Monty Williams: We’re supposed to sow on fertile ground. And I told my wife, I said, “We’re going to be partners with CBN, because look at what they’re doing.” They’re bringing people to know Christ, discipling people, hooking them up with churches. They’re in areas of the world that most people won’t even think about going to. They’re on the cutting edge, but still simple in their approach, that Jesus Christ is Lord and master of the universe. Ingrid Williams: CBN is doing some awesome stuff. They’re spreading the Gospel, most importantly. It’s all about being an extension of Christ here on earth for the lost. Monty Williams: The blessing that comes from tithing, the Bible says He gives exceedingly and abundantly above all that we could ask or think. ANDREW KNOX: Monty encourages others to give to CBN. Monty Williams: This ministry has been on TV for many, many decades now, and it’s like the proof is in the pudding. Just be a part of it. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: God has given Monty some tremendous wisdom, and we are grateful that we can share that wisdom with those of you in the audience. KRISTI WATTS: Absolutely. PAT ROBERTSON: Did you like it? KRISTI WATTS: I liked it. PAT ROBERTSON: Did you? KRISTI WATTS: Yes. You know what I liked about it, Pat? PAT ROBERTSON: What did you like? KRISTI WATTS: Is because it not only talks about how you can take your current financial situation to the next level, but a lot of people are scared with the money that they currently have, how can they keep that money? And so you talk about both, which is great. Wonderful principles. PAT ROBERTSON: Principles make it easy. And I want you to prosper. So this is a way to prosper. I have some tips and secrets of prosperity in here: 1-800-759-0700. Kristi. KRISTI WATTS: Pat, we have a really cool story for you. Her name is Jo Weitz, and Jo just loved praying for people. But it became more and more difficult after a growth developed actually in her throat. She also had a hard time eating and even breathing, but that didn’t stop Jo from enjoy her favorite part of The 700 Club. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * JO WEITZ GRAPHIC: It Happened to Me Jo Weitz: Well, it was the beginning of 2008, and I just couldn’t get over a cold. I finally went to the doctor and found out that I had pneumonia and liquid in the lungs. And I was extremely ill. I could hardly stand or do anything. This went on for a couple of months, until I finally started feeling better. And toward the end of that time, it’s like a growth developed in my throat, very difficult to swallow, and I preferred the softer food, that type of thing. Hard eating, hard breathing. It was like always there. Even talking to people on the phone or praying with people on the phone, it was like my throat would hang up. Even the words would hang up. I had been to the doctor more than once about this. She didn’t know what was going to happen, and I might have it forever. She just didn’t know. I was on antibiotics. And I was also on a cream that I needed to put in my nose. I was, of course, praying and talking to the Lord. But even praising Him, my throat would hurt. And I thought, “This is so strange. This isn’t right.” So I sat down on my couch, watching The 700 Club. I was enjoying the program very much. And then they started to pray, and that’s my favorite part of the program, like it’s Gordon’s favorite part. And they described my condition to a T. TERRY MEEUWSEN: There’s someone else, when you swallow, it’s almost you have to swallow over something in your throat. And I don’t know what it is, but God is healing that condition for you and taking it away. Jo Weitz: I just couldn’t believe it. I said, “That sounds like me. I’m going to claim that. I know this works. I’m going to claim that in Jesus’ name.” And I put my hand up. And I said, “Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Lord.” And I heard this loud pop. And you know how you kind of check, like something is different. You know something is different. It was different. It was gone. It was gone. I couldn’t wait until my husband got home, so I could tell him. And I was just rejoicing all day in the fact that here I am just one little person, not an important person, and the Lord Jesus Christ, the Creator of everything, bends down to answer my prayer and cares that much for me. That is so incredible how He cares for us as individuals. One person out of how many billions of people and how many people that God cares about. Possibly there is somebody else on the planet, but that one was for me. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * HOSTS PRAY FOR NEEDS KRISTI WATTS: Our God is such a generous God. Sometimes we have this perception that God is stingy. He has like a treasure box of blessings that we have to beg Him to give out. No, God is just waiting to hand you those blessings, because they’re there for you. We want to encourage you. How cool is that, Pat? PAT ROBERTSON: Isn’t that wonderful? KRISTI WATTS: I love stuff like that. PAT ROBERTSON: God would stop a program and say, “You. You, right there.” KRISTI WATTS: Yes. PAT ROBERTSON: She said, “Well, I’m not important.” She is important. You’re all important. God loves you, every one of you. He loves you. Okay, here is Janice in Dupo, Illinois. She said as long as she can remember, she had sinus trouble and allergies. Last September, she had redness and puffiness around her eyes for several days. She was watching this program. Kristi, you had a word of knowledge, “You have an eye discharge. Your eyes get really watery and itchy and puffy. The Lord has healed you from whatever it is, a sinus infection, right now.” Janice said, “That’s me.” And two and a half hours later, all the redness and puffiness in her eyes were gone. She hasn’t had any problem since that. God healed her sinus condition. What do you have? KRISTI WATTS: I love that. God used you, too, Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Okay. I’m glad. KRISTI WATTS: There is a woman from Ohio who had weaknesses in her muscles in her left arm. Whenever she tried to stretch out that arm, she experienced pain. And this went on for about six weeks. Last August, Pat, she was watching The 700 Club. You had a word of knowledge, and you said, “There is a withered muscle in your arm. And right now, that muscle is gaining strength. Move and stretch out your hand. Stretch it out and receive the healing in your body. God is doing miracles right now. Immediately, she said immediately that pain and weakness went away. And Phyllis was able to stretch out her arm. Come on! PAT ROBERTSON: Praise God. KRISTI WATTS: Let’s praise the Lord, Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, let’s join together. KRISTI WATTS: Yes. PAT ROBERTSON: Folks, join with us. Let’s pray. Let’s believe God. God has a special blessing for you. “Father, in Jesus’ name, we thank you for these answers to prayer. But they’re just a couple out of thousands that have happened. Now, Lord, you love people.
