CBN Helps Purify Water After Peru Floods

Almost constant rain has caused massive flooding in Lima and northern Peru.   9-year-old Rocio’s home was swept away in the swollen river.

“At first the river overflowed,” recalled Rocio. I was afraid that all my brothers and sisters were going to drown.”

Rocio, her mom and siblings are living here in temporary shelters assembled out of sticks and plastic.  About four hundred families are struggling to survive in this refugee camp on top of a hill.  A muddy pond below is their main source of water.  We heard that people have been without clean drinking water for up to three weeks.

“My mom walked to a road and asked a lot of people to give us water to drink,” said the youngster, who spoke of her hardship with a smile on her face.  “We were so thirsty.  after a few days, she came back with only one small bottle.  she gave it to me and my brothers and sisters.”

Meanwhile the rains continued to fall.  Mudslides and flooding made life miserable.  Rocio told CBN that she prayed.

“I asked God to keep the river from overflowing again.  And god listened to me because the river stopped rising!” she exclaimed.  “My brother Manuel and I were really thirsty and we also asked God to send water.”

Just one day after her prayer for water to drink, CBN came to her community.  Working with a local pastor, we set up water purifiers which cleaned hundreds of gallons of water per hour!  A grateful Rocio and her brother satisfied their thirst.

“God heard me and he sent me water to drink and to wash with,” declared Rocio.

The need for fresh drinking water continues in other hard hit communities in Peru, and CBN is trying to reach as many people, as quickly as possible in the coming weeks.
