How To Prepare Yourself For Life's Troubles

MOM’S SECRET
When Bob was a soon-to-be college graduate his mom shared with him the greatest advice he has ever received.  She told him of a “secret” that was passed on to her. She said, “There is nothing that you could do or think of in life that would be more important than setting up your two chairs right now and doing it every day of your life.” The secret that his mom was talking about is this: “God wants to spend time with each of us every morning, before we begin the day. He wants to talk to us; be friends. He already knows everything about us, and He wants you to know everything about Him.” Bob’s mom asked him, “If there was a one percent chance that God would meet you, would you set up the 2 Chairs?” Bob thought about it and decided he had nothing to lose. So he told her he would. His mom thought that was a good decision because she believed there was a 100 percent chance God would meet  with Boband have some things to tell him.

Bob’s first 2 Chairs moment only lasted ten minutes but it changed his life forever. He woke up at 5:00 a.m. and made himself a cup of coffee. He says, “The moment I sat down at 2 Chairs I felt Him.” Bob felt peace and love as he heard God say, “I’m so excited you’re here!” Since 1976, Bob has been putting his mom’s advice into action. Each morning he has the same meeting for mentoring, advice, and daily guidance.

In life, Bob says we all have troubles that is why it is important to be prepared. There are some problems you can handle yourself like a broken garage door or a flooded bathroom. Other problems bring so much trouble you don’t know what to do or where to turn: an accident, a job loss or a bad health prognosis. Bob says instead of isolating yourself and feeling hopeless, you need to turn to something bigger than who you are – bigger than your thoughts, your ways by asking yourself three simple, but disruptive questions: (1) Does God know your situation?; (2) Is it too hard for Him to handle?; and (3) Does He have a good plan for you? Once you realize the answer to the third question in “yes,” the next step is to hear from God on that plan.

OVERCOME CHALLENGES
Bob says God has steps that He wants you to follow to help bring you through the challenges and over the obstacles that are a part of daily life:
•    Step 1: Discover the Secret of 2 Chairs – Dedicate two chairs in your home for real conversation with God. Even though He knows it all, He still wants you to share the worries, pain, hurt, and shame, whatever is going on with you.
•    Step 2: Call Your WHO Friend – One of the greatest mistakes people make in times of trouble is that they don’t reach out for help and lean on their friends in times of need. God has given you specific people who will speak truth about your value and worth. You are not alone in your crisis.
•    Step 3: See the Field – Bob’s dad had to have part of his ear removed because of cancer. He could not imagine how he would continue doing business as a national business executive with only three-fourths of the ear remaining. Bob’s six year old niece spoke up and said, “Why don’t you just grow your hair a little longer on the side?” It’s not easy to always see solutions. Learn to get things from God’s perspective on your situation.
•    Step 4: Change Will Do You Good – When Bob’s girls were growing up, he always made time to play catch or kick the soccer ball with them when he got home from work. He also made time for “download moments” where he would take the time to just listen to his girls’ day and help build their self-esteem. God loves to have moments with us like that too. God shares thoughts and ideas that are easy to put into action – changes that bring immediate results when you make them.
•    Step 5: Put On Your Armor – When Bob joined his dad’s company, Eastman & Beaudine he was given something others weren’t because of the price his dad paid forward to him – unmerited favor. Over the years, Bob has learned how to submit to God, allowing His strength and courage to be transmitted to him at 2 Chairs. When this happens, he has the confidence of a favored son and is able to confront any obstacle.
•    Step 6: Order Yourself; Eyes Forward –When Bob joined the Carnation Company after graduating from college. His faith was tested when a crisis at work arose. He trusted God and his fears were diminished. Believe that God is able to handle any problem you give Him at 2 Chairs.
•    Step 7: Do the Done – When Bob was growing up, his mom returned to spending time with God after being away several years caught up in the business of life.  As a result, the atmosphere in their home changed. Before long, Bob’s dad began doing 2 Chairs. With the two of them united, their example to the family was beyond impactful. Let go and believe that if you do your part, trust and believe God, He will do His part.
