Menchie and her husband were already raising their own children when they decided to take in their 2-year-old nephew, Joseph, who had become an orphan.   The toddler was thin and malnourished when he arrived at his new home.            
 
“I knew we had to take in—no matter what,” Menchie told CBN.  “We didn’t know how we would manage financially but we wanted to give them a home.”      
 
Right at the time they took Joseph in, CBN started a program in the community to help children like Joseph.  Each month we gave the family extra food to help the boy gain weight.    We provided free vitamins and medical check-ups for all the kids in the community.   And finally, to help Menchie relieve some of that financial stress at home, we gave her a grant to start a small business.  
 
“I’ve always wanted to have a small grocery store,” said Menchie with a smile.  “Now, we’re not just selling food we sell school supplies, clothes, even umbrellas!”
 
Today, Joseph is a healthy, active 5-year-old who likes playing with friends and going to school!  

We also learned that he no longer thinks of Menchie as his “auntie”—He now calls her mama.
