Overcoming Debt When Things Go Wrong

Tucked into the Black Hills of South Dakota lies the historic Homestake Mansion, home of CBN partners Gary and Sandee Coe. The property is more than a home to the Coes. In 1990, their income dried up after Gary, a commercial pilot, became ill and couldn’t work. Sandee explains, "Suddenly he got out of bed and he couldn’t move. He was diagnosed with Sito Megala Virus. His immune system shut down.” Eventually Gary recovered, but he had been out of work so long, they lost their home. They cut back where they could, except their tithing and giving. “We’re partners with the lord, and we’ve got that really clear,” says Gary. “Everything we have belongs to Him.” “We made a commitment and kept that commitment and all I can say is, doors started opening for us that only God could open,” Sandee adds. By now the Coes had started a new business developing health supplements. They made two commitments, to run it debt-free, and give off the profits. The business grew steadily. In short time, they recovered from their financial crisis. “After years of struggle, things have become easy,” laughs Gary. They also became CBN partners. “I know when I give to a ministry like CBN they are feeding people, they are clothing people, they are going into every part of the world, if there’s a disaster, they’re teaching the Word of God,” says Sandee. When the Homestake Mansion came up for sale, the Coes were in a position to make an offer. They got the home for half the asking price! “To think that we’d even be here and God would entrust us with this property, it’s just the goodness of God,” says Sandee. Today the Coe’s businesses continue to grow. The couple is convinced it’s because of their faithfulness to give. Sandee emphasizes, “I have to say we never stopped giving through the hard times, we gave consistently, and God opened up a treasure only He could do.” The Coes took God at His word and He provided for their every need.
