The Awesome Power of our Omnipotent God

Dr. Paul J. Palma - Professor, Regent University Biblical Studies & Christian Ministries

“Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.” (Mark 11:23, NIV)

God’s power exceeds the boundaries of the human imagination. The world’s largest mountain is Mauna Loa, Hawaii. It is the most voluminous with a base of 2000 square miles—half of the entire Island of Hawaii. It is also one of the tallest mountains standing at 30,080 feet—imagine 25 Empire State Buildings stacked one on top of the other. If that’s not enough, Mauna Loa is also one of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes with a major eruption every 5 years. Our God, the creator of Mauna Loa and the world’s great wonders, “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” (Eph. 3:20, NIV).

Can God move a mountain the size of Mauna Loa? As sure as He designed it and brought it into being, He is able to pick Mauna Loa up and cast it into the Pacific Ocean. The reason our faith is capable of so much is because of the object of our faith. We serve a mighty God who is worthy of “mountain-moving” faith.

We all doubt God’s ability from time to time. It’s part of being human. This is precisely what Jesus had in mind as He taught the crowds of Judea, "Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God" (Mark 10:27, NLT). Because His awesome power exceeds our imagination and His wondrous ways stretch our ordinary ways of thinking, we don’t expect miracles in our day to day lives. We are preoccupied with the ordinary and fail to believe in the extraordinary. In anticipation of the teaching of Christ, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Isaiah declaring:

“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”  (Isa. 55:9, NIV)

God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, nor are His way our ways. Our God is Omnipotent. This word comes from the Latin term “omni” (all) and the word “potent” (power). Jesus wants us to replace thoughts of doubt and speculation with faith in the all-powerful God. Everyone has their own figurative mountains that need moving—circumstances in life that seem so daunting you think you’ll never overcome. You or your loved ones may face the pain of unemployment, debt, a failing marriage, or a debilitating illness. Jesus is reminding us that our “God can” move this mountain, whatever it may be.

The Bible is our guidebook to a “God can” mentality. The very first chapters of the Bible, Genesis 1 and 2, tell of the God who brought the heavens and earth into being and set the sun and moon into orbit. The same God who from darkness brought light, and from emptiness filled the earth with the sea, vegetation, and living creatures, is waiting to shine on your life today and fill it with new meaning and wonder.

The well-known Hymn Holy, Holy, Holy expresses the awesome power of the God who can do all things:

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity.

Our All-powerful, Almighty God, the God we love, cherish, and serve, is more than able. When you place your faith in the Omnipotent God, believing on His awesome power with all your heart, He will enable you to achieve the insurmountable and accomplish the unthinkable. The God who gave you life and breath, the God who made the Hawaiian Mountains, the Rockies, the Andes, and the Himalayas, is ready to move a mountain in your life today. The only question is, do you believe it?
