Book Review: Seeing Through the Lies by Vonda Skelton

Seeing Through the Lies; Unmasking the Myths Women Believe
Vonda Skelton
Regal Books, February 2008
ISBN: 978-0830745012, 194 pages

In 'Seeing Through the Lies,' author and speaker Vonda Skelton humorously addresses the disappointments women experience as they search for truth while believing a lie. Each chapter opens with amusing anecdotes from real life and ends with answers and guidance straight from God s Word.

The opening chapter of this book is so winsome that within the first four pages I was hooked. Skelton discusses such topics as busyness, materialism, motherhood, and true beauty. She handles these issues with humility and grace, offering sage advice and biblical instruction.

The day I began reading Seeing Through the Lies just happened to be my daughter’s first day of public high school. I was struggling with feelings of inadequacy, and I found myself wondering if I had done all I could to prepare her for what was ahead. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect for me to read this book! It helped me to identify the lies I had been believing about my “mothering abilities,” and helped me to put my confidence firmly in God’s adequacy—not my own. Seeing Through the Lies reminds readers of the absolute worth and importance of motherhood.

In Chapter 8 Skelton writes, "The world tries to rob us of the joy of motherhood by questioning its worth. Feminists tell us we can change the world, but they say we can’t change it if we’re bogged down in changing diapers. The culture glorifies the satisfaction in outside employment and diminishes the significance of mothering."

Another favorite part of Seeing Through the Lies is the laugh-out-loud chapter called “Beauty and the Book.” Written in Skelton’s self effacing style, she teaches women the Biblical standard for “inward beauty.”

Seeing Through the Lies is a delightfully encouraging read, and a useful tool to help women unmask the myths that may be holding them back from living a fulfilling, Christ-centered life.
