Breakfast of Champions

Every morning, I prepare breakfast for our three dogs. I rotate feeding them each morsel from a designated doggie fork. Occasionally, one dog will rise. If I say, “sit,” the dog assumes I’m speaking to one of the other dogs. But, if I say the dog’s name, she eagerly obeys. Our senior pooch looks forward to this time the most, so she stomps her feet the entire time to make sure I notice her. The youngest gal takes each morsel with gusto, and the youngest male snorts between bites. Theirs is a breakfast fit for champions.

While reflecting on my fur babies’ morning antics, I thought about how much God cares. He feeds me from His Word, and He brings about promise after promise as I digest these savory morsels. Psalm 37:3 reads,

“Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed." Psalm 37:3 (KJV)

This encourages me to trust Him to feed me, and know I can apply this truth to the spiritual realm as well as to the natural.

Sometimes I wonder if I trust God enough to receive the encouraging messages He says about me, like “I am with you always," (Matthew 28:20), or, that His good thoughts toward me outnumber the grains of sand on the beach (see Psalm 139:17-18), or the 26 times He reminds me His love endures in Psalm 136. I find myself thinking, Are You calling my name, Lord? Is that good promise applicable to me? I try to trust God, but when problems spill like cornflakes hitting the kitchen floor, and I’m scrambling to pick up the crumbs, I wonder if God’s blessings are really for me. I know I shouldn’t think this way, but the reality is, sometimes those doubts do creep in.

As I fixed coffee one morning, I decided it was time I had a breakfast fit for a champion. I chose one verse and nibbled on it all day. The verse was,

“Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart." Psalm 37:4 (KJV)

I wanted to digest this word slowly and allow God’s goodness to seep into every cell of my being. By the end of the day, I was ready for another morsel, so I digested the next two verses. On and on I nibbled, for days in a row, eating the Word as a champion’s breakfast God has prepared for me.

What about you, friend? Are you ready to receive the goodness of the Lord that He’s speaking about you? He loves you, and the banquet table the Lord prepares for you is filled with juicy morsels He has made for you to enjoy. Pull up a comfy chair, scooch up to the table, pick up your fork, and dine. You, my friend, are God’s champion.

Father God, help me to dine with delight at Your banquet table.
