Childlike Curiosity

My kids have always loved to ask questions. As toddlers, they asked, “What’s that?” and “How come?” As my kids have matured, their questions have also. “Mom, what does God look like? How does God feel about this? Mom, why do you tell me not to do something and then you do it?” That last question stung, but it was legit.

As a parent, I’ve always worked to keep the lines of communication open and flowing. Their father and I have encouraged them to ask us anything, which has been uncomfortable at times, but we believe it’s worth the connection. For the majority of my youth, I was scared of expressing my thoughts, so today, open communication is extremely important to me.

I was the kid who was always afraid to ask questions. Some days I still am. I feared that my questions would reveal my ignorance or sound stupid, or even worse, be annoying. Instead of speaking up, I consistently suffocated my curiosity, which spilled over into my relationship with God. I was fearful of asking Him the wrong thing because I didn’t know His heart.

Intimacy with God produces courage and curiosity.

Curiosity is a gift from God to draw our hearts closer to Him. You and I were designed to be curious, and our Creator deposited in us an appetite to know more.

“Call to Me and I will answer you, and tell you [and even show you] great and mighty things, [things which have been confined and hidden], which you do not know and understand and cannot distinguish.” (Jeremiah 33:3 AMP)

Jesus often exhorted His followers to become childlike so they could experience the Kingdom of Heaven in its fullest measure.

“ …For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” (Matthew 19:14 NLT)

This wasn’t a mandate limited to miracles but one to apply to all areas of our relationship with God.

Our father eagerly awaits our questions for a number of reasons:

• For intimacy and connection
• To learn and experience His heart and nature in the fullest measures
• To empower you to live in Christ
• And so you can experience Heaven’s Kingdom with wide-eyed wonder

At first, it was hard for me to even know what to ask God. I was concerned I would ask the wrong questions, but Holy Spirit spoke to me during that season. “Ask the questions that your children are asking you.” So, I started listening to my kids and asking those questions. They may have sounded foolish to some, but I grew to know a side of God I’d never before experienced.

Friend, you’ve received the same invitation to call unto God and He will answer you and tell you great and mighty things you do not know. It’s a promise! Don’t let fear keep you from knowing the God of wonders and miracles. Let your childlike curiosity lead you into new breadths and depths of His Kingdom.

Ask Him and then wait for his response:

• God, what part of Your nature do You want me to get to know in this season?
• God, what type of questions do you want me to start asking you?
• God, where do I need to become curious again?
• God, where do I need to become childlike again?
