Several of my friends had gathered for an evening of food and fellowship at a local historical venue. We exchanged warm greetings before taking our seats in the elegant dining room. Dinner was about to commence when we learned that there was an issue with our caterer. Other than a couple of side dishes, there was only one small container of lasagna to feed the many hungry people in attendance.

A similar occasion came to mind as I thought about how Jesus had provided so lovingly for His people as told in the book of Mark. The disciples wondered how they were going to feed 5,000 people with just five loaves of bread and two fish. Little did they know, it was all Jesus needed to help them.

Jesus took the simple fare and looked up to heaven and said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all. And they all ate and were satisfied. (Mark 6:41-42 ESV)

As our hostess portioned out the food, she was amazed at how each plate carried an ample serving of lasagna, garlic bread, and salad that truly satisfied us. It was as if Jesus had blessed us just like He did for others all those years ago.

Unexpectedly, the caterer showed up later with a second container of lasagna. Although the first was sufficient, I later recognized the plentifulness as another similarity to Jesus’ provision. Mark 6:43 says there were 12 baskets of leftovers in the Lord’s miracle with the loaves and fish! When God sees an opportunity to provide for His children, you can be certain He doesn’t do it by half-measure (see Philippians 4:19).

Is there an area in your life where you need God’s provision? Is it in a pile of unpaid bills? A crumbling marriage? An empty pantry? Whatever the case may be, believe that Jesus can provide the same way for you today as He did centuries before. All you have to do is give Him the little you have, so He can do wonders.

Pray with me: Dear Jesus, help us to never underestimate Your almighty power—no matter the circumstances. We proclaim here and now that You can take even a mustard seed of faith and multiply it by a hundredfold. Thank You for Your unchanging love and abundant provision that never cease to amaze us. We place our hope and trust in Your name. Amen.
