When I was a child, my siblings and I used to play a game of “trust-fall” with each other. The leader would ask, “Do you trust me?” and hesitantly, we would say “yes” and free-fall back, hoping that they would catch us. Ninety percent of the time, we would catch whoever was falling. But occasionally, we would play a trick on our sibling and let him or her fall to the ground, laughing hysterically as the child fell. I know, so very mean.

Sometimes our relationship with God feels like a trust-fall also, doesn’t it? Maybe you had a similar experience growing up where you participated in a trust-fall activity, or maybe, much deeper than that, you’ve put your trust and hope in someone, and they failed you. I have been there also. The gut-wrenching disappointment and pain that comes with a break of trust is truly heartbreaking. I sympathize with you if you have felt that pain before. If you’ve trusted someone in the past and been hurt, learning to trust again takes time and intentionality.

It's easy to view our relationship with God like our earthly relationships, but we must realize that He is faithful and will not change. Isaiah 55:8-9 tells us this: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (NIV) We can be confident when we put our trust in Jesus, He will never fail us. He is faithful and He remains the same and trustworthy yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

David understood this when he declared in Psalm 20:7, "Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God." There were many reasons David could have found to not trust in God. Some of which may sound like your story. David had been overlooked by his father and brothers as a child. David was in fear that King Saul would take his life multiple times. David spent many years of his life being hurt by others that shouldn’t have let him down. David also had his own sins and disappointments. But he knew the truth that God was faithful despite all of this. He knew that he could put his trust in his God.

Do you know today that you can put all your trust in God? Maybe you, too, have asked yourself, Who can I trust? The answer is you can trust in the Lord. Just as Psalm 145:13 says, The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does.

Pastors and churches will fail us. Presidents and governments will fail us. Even family members and those closest to us will fail us. But because of the blood of Jesus, we can rest assured that God never will. He remains good and He remains faithful.

Today, let’s take some time in prayer and allow ourselves to surrender our trust to the Lord. We can let down our guard, free-fall back into His arms, and know that He will catch us. He will hold our hands and walk with us (Isaiah 41:13)

Would you pray with me?

Lord, I surrender my life to you. Help me today, to trust You with everything I am. Thank You that because of the blood of Jesus, I can put my hope and all my trust in You. You are faithful and You are for me. Amen!
