What We Can Take Away from Ridley Scott's New "Exodus: Gods and Kings" Trailer

"When men ruled as gods...one was chosen...to change the world."

There's such power in these first words seen on the new trailer for Ridley Scott's upcoming movie, Exodus: Gods and Kings. And it gives me hope, as a Bible-believing Christian, for what we'll see on screen when this new movie from 20th Century Fox releases on December 12, 2014.

Hindsight is 20/20. And those familiar with the biblical account found in the Book of Exodus know exactly what happens to Moses. We know that his bold faith leads to a glorious conclusion that displays the power and faithfulness of God.

What's so great about this story getting more big screen time is that a generation of moviegoers who don't know who Moses was and what God accomplished through him will experience it for the first time. For those who do know, this release gives us a chance to watch this history unfold in a new way.

Starring Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Ben Kingsley and Sigourney Weaver, Exodus: Gods and Kings will transport us all back to the opulence and grisliness of ancient Egypt at a time when men, women and children broke their backs under the whips of their enslavers. Moses, the most unlikely of men, becomes God's messenger to Pharaoh, relaying the demand to let His people go. It is one of the most beautifully dramatic and complex stories detailed in the Bible.

So, what can we learn from this new trailer for Exodus: Gods and Kings? One thing is abundantly clear. Scott's movie is going to be epic, and rightfully so. What can't we know yet? How accurate it's going to be.

Some are calling into question how closely the movie will line up with what is explained in the biblical account of Moses and the plagues that besieged Pharaoh's lands and people. One point of discussion centers on Scott, an avowed agnostic. How could he adequately portray one of the greatest moments in Bible history? Well...at this point, God only knows.

In the same vein as "Don't judge a book by its cover", let's not judge a movie by its filmmaker (or what we think we know about him). God will use what God will use. Let's go in with eyes open, but let's not have our hearts closed to what God could do through a retelling of the history He orchestrated.

Far be it from me to prejudge a film based on what I imagine it might be. Come December, I will be one of the many sitting in a darkened movie theater watching this very true story as it projects onto the big screen. I suspect it will have me on the edge of my seat as I witness the work of these talented storytellers as they unveil the humanity and divinity found in Moses' story. A response to the movie's biblical accuracy and entertainment quality will post on CBN.com after that viewing.
