Kirk Cameron Calls for a National Family Meeting
Actor Kirk Cameron is calling for a national family meeting live in cinemas across America.
Positioned to be one of the largest live theatrical events in recent memory, Cameron, best known to faith audiences for his roles in Fireproof and the Left Behind series, has assembled a notable group of Christian leaders, authors, and musical artists to provide their perspective on the future of our nation. Scheduled to appear are Dr. Ben Carson, Frances Chan, Dr. James MacDonald, Eric Metaxas, Jennifer Rothschild, and many others.
Set to air live on Tuesday, October 18th at 8:00 p.m. ET, Revive Us will be shown in more than 700 movie theaters across the country. Featuring a mix of praise and worship time, viewers will also hear from the aforementioned speakers on a host of topics that are paramount to our future. The two-hour event will conclude with a 15-minute question and answer period comprised of audience-submitted questions followed by an open time for attendees to gather in their respective theaters for prayer and discussion.
I recently spoke with Cameron about why he felt called to organize such an ambitious event, his advice for families battling an increasingly secularized culture in which we live, and why Revive Us can be a starting point for positive change in America.
Kirk, what was the genesis of the Revive Us one-night movie event in theaters around the country?
It came about because I have been in churches all over the country and as I talk with couples at marriage conferences I hear this all the time. Moms are concerned about the future for their children. Dads know that there is something broken in our country and they want to fix it. People wonder if we are truly in the last days of our great nation. I want to say to them that I believe there has never been a more exciting time in America to be a Christian. This could be our finest hour because it is when all hope seems lost that is when God parts the waters. That is when He splits the Red Sea. I believe this could be a “Red Sea” moment for us in our America story right now. So, that is why I created Revive Us. Revive Us is a national family meeting. I’m calling for a national family meeting. I’m bringing together some of my brightest, most humble, wisest, and faithful friends like Frances Chan, Ben Carson, James McDonald, Eric Metaxas, Jennifer Rothschild, we are even going to have the chance to pray with Karen Abercrombie, who played Miss Clara in the movie War Room. We will also have a question and answer time where we answer people’s questions from all over the country. It’s a time for the Church to gather as a family in a thousand movie theaters across the nation. We will worship together, pray together, and learn how to revive our nation from the inside out and from the bottom all the way up to the top.
Why did you make the decision to sound the clarion call for revival? Why did you feel called to do this?
I feel called to create Revive Us for three reasons. One, it’s my sacred duty and responsibility before God to be salt and light in the world. People say, ‘What about the darkness?’ Well, Jesus said, ‘You are the light of the world.’ They say, ‘What about all the corruption?’ Jesus said, ‘You are the salt of the earth.’ It is up to us to push back the darkness and to stop the corruption. Second of all, I love our country. I love this nation that we built on Christian principles. Our Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence; these are Christian documents of freedom and a great expression of Biblical principles. I don’t want to see it crumble and go away. And thirdly, I’m doing this because I have six children. I’ve got a lot of skin in the game. I want them to have a bright future. I want to do all I can to leave them with a healthy country.
Based on what you just said about your children, what advice do you have for families who are really struggling, battling right now if you will, with the secularized culture that surrounds them and is trying to permeate our homes?
This is the most exciting time to be a Christian in America. It’s an exciting time to be alive. This could be our finest hour for the Kingdom of God, politically, in our churches, in our families, in our nation, for people of faith to shine like the sun. Wouldn’t that be wonderful if people could gather together and come together as one? That’s what I’m hoping Revive Us will be. I’m hoping there will be hundreds of thousands of people all coming together on October 18th in movie theaters across the nation. When families get together, when this family gets together and the Spirit of God is moving, we are unstoppable. We become a force of good for everybody.
Several interesting folks that you have already mentioned will be taking part in the event including Dr. Ben Carson, Frances Chan, James McDonald, Eric Metaxas and others. What role will they play in this production?
We will be having a panel to answer questions from people all over the country in theaters. They will be sharing their thoughts and answers to tough questions. When I ask some of these brilliant and faithful friends of mine what can we do in times like this in our nation they give me answers that fill me with hope and optimism. They give me a new perspective. They refresh my spirit and revive my heart. I want all of my friends and family and the whole nation to have access to this. So, I’m bringing these people together into one place. They are going to talk and share from their hearts. We are going to sing together and pray together. My daughter is going to be there singing. She will be a part of worship with the Passion band and Vertical Church band.
So, what you are describing to me is that Revive Us will be a good old worship service on hundreds of movie screens across the country. But what is really exciting to me is that this live event will be interactive. You will conclude Revive US with a 15 minute Q&A session of audience submitted questions. What can you tell me about that?
It will be more than just the questions. We will be worshipping together in movie theaters across the country. Think of 700 movie theaters that are turned into vibrant worship centers. We are going to be praying and worshipping together simultaneously. You are not watching a worship concert. You are actually participating in a live event. We will be broadcasting live from downtown Chicago in a historic church. Then, the question and answer session will happen as the night builds and there will even be time after Revive Us for people to hang out for 15 or 20 minutes to pray and discuss what they have learned that night.
How can people get tickets to the event? How can they find a theater near where they live?
Simple. Go to ReviveUs2016.com. You can watch the trailer there. You can put in your zip code and it will tell you where the closest theater is to you. You can buy tickets online for the October 18th event. This is the best way you can reserve your seats. Or you can just walk up to the theater and buy tickets as well.
After people have seen Revive Us, what is your greatest hope for the audience? What would you like to see people take away from this experience?
I want people to be revived first in their hearts. You know, a lot of people think revival is just a favored move of God … which it is but in a sense that is divorced from their actions. That is not true. The Bible is not just something that fell out of the sky after saying the right prayers and doing the right thing. You don’t just press some cosmic button on a heavenly vending machine and God just plops revival on your country. No. It’s when God’s people turn to Him and they pray and seek His ways. He sends revival into the hearts of men and women. Their hearts are revived. And that spreads to your homes, your churches, and all the way out to the edges of your country. It starts in your house and goes all the way to the White House.
