Another Step to Grow Closer to God
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105 ESV
Just like praying is communicating with God, so is reading the Bible! It’s been said that the Bible is God’s love letter to His people. Reading God’s Word helps us grow closer to Him as we learn His character and provision for His people.
In Scripture, we read stories filled with God’s love, promises for His people, and instructions on living a godly life. It’s a beautiful reminder that God has been redeeming all of creation through His Son Jesus since Adam and Eve ate the fruit. Everything in Scripture points to Jesus, even in the Old Testament!
So often, believers are faced with challenges of the world. How do we respond to social injustice, laws we disagree with, or words of governing leaders? Scripture is filled with these answers. The Bible is our instruction for life and living in a way that pleases God! We can confidently run everything through Scripture to find answers to these questions. Even when the Bible doesn’t address a specific topic, you can find answers by looking at God’s character and His design for the world.
Do you find yourself in a season where reading your Bible hasn’t been a priority? Maybe you’re in that season now. It happens to everyone at some point in their faith journey, but don’t worry! You can start again today and feel the presence of God as you read through His words! Below are some simple steps to work through while reading to help apply the Scripture to your life.
- Take the time to meditate on what you’ve read.
- How does this Scripture apply to you or what you’re going through?
- Does this bring to mind someone in your life you’ve been praying for?
- Ask God to reveal what you should learn from these passages.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV
