2010 NFL Training Camp Begins
By Shawn Brown
With the start of NFL training camps this week, I’d like to start talking about which teams will contend this year in their division. I’ll start with the NFC East. Will it be Washington, Dallas, New York, or Philadelphia? With a lot of the transactions that have taken place in the last three months, Dallas might jump out at you right out of the gate. With Tony Romo at the helm, three very capable receivers and a solid running game, one might think that they are the sure pick. But with the addition of Donovan McNaab to the Redskins, I can’t ignore the possibility that this team is about to reign once more.
Last season, Dallas came out on top followed by New York, Philadelphia, and of course Washington. This year, I believe there will be a shift to Redskins, Cowboys, Giants, Eagles and here’s why: Washington has long needed a franchise leader to run the offense as well as an offensive line to protect him long enough to give the three to four seconds he needs to make a play. They now have that or least are close depending on how quickly they adjust. They have five targets in the receiver corps. in Santana Moss, Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly, as well as TE’s Chris Cooley and Fred Davis. Now that the O-line is in place, Clinton Portis can do what he does best by producing big numbers on the running game with Willie Parker and Larry Johnson contributing greatly. They have always had a pretty decent defensive corps, and with them switching to a Mike Shanahan’s 3-4, we should see them wreak havoc for a good portion of the season.
For me at first glance, the NFC east is between Washington and Dallas. I can’t see the Giants or the Eagles keeping up this season due to personnel issues. The Giants receiver corps has suffered somewhat without their former superstar Plaxico Burress and recently lost the Dominick Hixon, but they do have Hakeem Nicks, Steve Smith and Mario Manningham. We’ll have to see how they develop throughout the season. The Eagles have Kevin Colb stepping in after Donavan was dealt to Washington, which means it might take a year or two to for him to develop as the team leader especially with Michael Vick standing right beside him.
So again I say, the NFC East is between Washington and Dallas. Thoughts anyone?
