Transcript

Man: “We could have just one drink.” LEE WEBB: A husband starts down a slippery slope. Man: “A couple lines of cocaine would be really great right now.” LEE WEBB: And winds up with a dead wife. Man: I could see her slumped over in the car and I was yelling, “Tonette, Tonette!” LEE WEBB: Plus, a pastor of two churches on opposite sides of the country. Jentezen Franklin shares how to gain a spiritual edge. * * * PAT ROBERTSON: Welcome to The 700 Club, when you think of oil and the Middle East, you usually think of countries like Saudi Arabia. But that may be about to change. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well now another Middle Eastern country could become one of the world’s biggest energy producers, and that country is Israel. Chris Mitchell has the story. ENERGY CHRIS MITCHELL (Central Israel): Israel imports most of its energy. Israel imports most of its energy. Like many countries in the West, it’s dependent on foreign sources. This valley is close to the spot where David slew Goliath. It also may become the site of Israel's future energy supply. Hundreds of feet below the surface lies a huge deposit of shale oil. Experts say it could eventually produce more oil than Saudi Arabia. Yuval Bartov (Chief geologist for Israel Energy Initiatives): I would say that we have found a spectacular resource. CHRIS MITCHELL: Yuval Bartov is chief geologist for Israel Energy Initiatives, or IEI, which controls a government license to explore for shale oil. Yuval Bartov: Just within the license area, which is a small part of the basin, we're talking about 40 billion barrels. If we take the whole country, we're talking about a two hundred and fifty billion barrels. So when you're hearing big numbers of this kind and even higher, they are real. They are real because they are there. It's in the ground. CHRIS MITCHELL: Those estimates, if true, rival Saudi Arabia's reserves of 264 billion barrels. At an exploratory well, Chief Engineer Howard Vinegar told us about their unique and environmentally safe way to extract the oil. Howard Vinegar (Chief Scientist, I.E.I.) What we basically do is drill wells using oil field technology, and the holes we drill in the ground are basically just six inches in diameter; and by drilling horizontal wells rather than vertical wells, we're able to minimize the surface footprint. And we actually only drill over a small strip of land compared to the amount of oil that's being produced. CHRIS MITCHELL: Vinegar's process differs from fracking, the sometimes controversial method of pumping massive amounts of water mixed with sand and other fluids to break up rock and free trapped gas and oil. He uses a technique begun by Sweden in the 1940s to heat the shale rock for months and then extract the oil. IEI believes the discovery of the deposit and the technology to extract it could one day make Israel an oil exporter. Howard Jonas (CEO of IDT): If America can get all the oil they need from Israel, if they eventually can get all the energy for themselves, it will change the whole world. CHRIS MITCHELL: The change could free Israel and much of the West from dependence on other countries. Effie Eitam (Genie Energy): To release the free world from the dependence from Arab, or I would say, on Islamic oil. CHRIS MITCHELL: The shale discovery comes at the same time Israel has found a major, natural gas deposit off its coast. Howard Vinegar: It just seems to mesh together in a revolutionary way. The long and the short of it is, I think Israel is on the verge of a revolution in its energy sources, and within a decade Israel is going to be energy independent and a major exporter, and it couldn't happen at a better time for us. Howard Jonas: You know, when you have Iran that wants to nuke you, when you're at the mercy of Saudi Arabia and all these other countries, I mean, now is when the danger is the greatest, and now is when I think God has put the solution in our hands. CHRIS MITCHELL: Chris Mitchell, CBN News, Central Israel. PAT ROBERTSON: What an amazing story! Golda Meir had a joke. She said when Moses came up out of Egypt, they turned left instead of right. They made a mistake, they should have gone towards Saudi Arabia where the oil was. Well, maybe it wasn't a mistake. God knew exactly where the oil was, and to think of that, massive, massive natural gas out in the offshore in the Mediterranean. TERRY MEEUWSEN: The implications of that on a broad scale are pretty astonishing. PAT ROBERTSON: Revolutionary, but what he's talking about 100 or so billion barrels of oil, or 200 . . . . TERRY MEEUWSEN: Four hundred, actually, I think for them. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, whatever they're talking about, is simply astounding, and they won't be fracking. The fracking is you pump, say, 50 barrels of water in, and a million or so pounds of sand or whatever you're going to frack with, and it's just a huge process. Now to heat this, it's great. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, Israel's always been very creative in how they do things on cutting technology. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, it’s the Lord giving to them. And people have been talking about Asher’s foot. “Asher dipped his foot in oil,” and that's a misreading of what the Bible says. You know, the oil, it's not petroleum; it's olive oil. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Which makes sense. PAT ROBERTSON: If Asher was out dipping his feet, you can't sell but so much olive oil. So, in any event he’s got olive oil. It is nice to wipe your hands with. Hey, speaking of big money things, do you know what 30 seconds on the Super bowl costs? TERRY MEEUWSEN: I have no idea, but I'm sure it's going to be shocking. PAT ROBERTSON: Just guess. This is a new era of the Super Bowl. Thirty seconds of air time. TERRY MEEUWSEN: I wouldn’t have a clue. I have not tracked in the past. PAT ROBERTSON: Three point five million dollars for thirty seconds, and they are sold out already. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Unbelievable. PAT ROBERTSON: Sold out. People standing in line to throw their 3 1/2 million dollars on the table. That's just one of those little factoids, but we congratulate our Israeli friends. It's magnificent. Well, Lee Webb has the rest of our top stories from the CBN Newsroom. Lee. APPOINTMENT CONTROVERSY LEE WEBB: Pat, President Obama has used a controversy over recess appointment to install the new head of a government consumer agency. And Republicans on Capitol Hill are hopping mad about it. John Waage has more. RECESS JOHN WAAGE: The White House bypassed Congress to appoint former Ohio Atty. Gen. Richard Cordray as the head of the new consumer financial protection Bureau with wide ranging government powers. Cordray's appointment had been delayed for months by Senate Republicans, but the president used a recess appointment to put Cordray in power even though the Senate wasn't in recess. President Obama: Now’s the time to do everything we can to protect consumers, prevent financial crisis, like the one that we've been through, from ever happening again. That starts with letting Richard do his job. JOHN WAAGE: Republicans say the action is a power grab that gives one man too much authority at the expense of congressional oversight. Sen. Mitch McConnell (Senate Minority Leader): If you ask me, the American people should be getting more transparency out of this administration, not less. John Waage: The president’s disdain for Congress has been a reoccurring theme in his speeches for several months now. He told an audience in Ohio Wednesday that, when Congress doesn't act, the economy is hurt and people are at risk. Some of the president's harshest critics say his actions are better suited for a banana republic than for the United States. But he continues to pursue his high-risk strategy. He added three new members to the National Labor Relations Board on Wednesday, all of them recess appointments. John Waage, CBN News. LEE WEBB: What do you think, Pat? PAT ROBERTSON: Well, the last election I didn't know we were electing a dictator. I thought we were electing a president who had constitutional powers. And we have shared governmental responsibility between the Senate and the House and the courts and the president. And that division has worked really well in our history, so suddenly you've got somebody who's power hungry, and he wants to take it all. There's no question there's got to be a challenge to this. Congress is not in recess. It is not a recess appointment. Congress is in session. The House has never gone into recess because of all those things that have been going on. Now, if you want a real shocker, they won't give up. They say, “Oh, we can’t cut the budget, but if we're going to cut, we ought to cut defense.” But would you believe how much money is being given by the federal government, by your taxpayers, and remember we've got to borrow 41 cents on every dollar we spend. So 41 cents of what Lee's going to tell you about is being spent by your government. PLANNED PARENTHOOD FEDERAL AID LEE WEBB: Pat, that’s right. Planned Parenthood, Planned Parenthood, received nearly a half-billion dollars from the government in its most recent fiscal year. That group’s annual report shows it got 487 million dollars, up from 363 million the previous year. The report also says the group performed more than 300,000 abortions, about the same number as the previous year. The group reports it has net assets of slightly more than a billion dollars. Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: If you’re not appalled. I am absolutely shocked. President Obama, now get this. In that latest dustup he had with Congress last summer, or whenever it was, he was willing to shut the federal government down rather than take away the subsidy to Planned Parenthood. Now that's the truth! He was willing to shut the government down rather than deny Planned Parenthood Federal money. They don't have any right to it. This is a grant that's given to them. It's not a federal agency; it's a grant. We have found, well I won't go into something, there's a lawsuit going on right now with the American Center for Law and Justice, has discovered something really shocking about them, but we won't go into that now, because it’s in court. I just think if that doesn't appall you. Here were borrowing money. We're putting a burden on our children and our grandchildren just to pay for the waste of government, and the government is doling out about 487 million or so, to this group that provides abortions. TERRY MEEUWSEN: And it wasn't just that they were unwilling to cut; they increased. PAT ROBERTSON: They did. It went from 300 million to this. Almost 50 percent more. Lee. HOUSING HELP LEE WEBB: Pat, the Federal Reserve believes that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac could play a role in turning the housing industry around. The Fed says Fannie and Freddie could get more involved in the government's housing refinance program. Fed officials reportedly believe the weak housing industry has been a major roadblock to an economic recovery. The Fed made the recommendation in a paper to Congress, but many in Congress are likely to oppose that idea. The central bank has tried to stimulate the economy by lowering key interest rates close to zero. The government took over Fannie and Freddie in 2008 as they came close to collapse. COUNTDOWN TO NEW HAMSHIRE LEE WEBB: The GOP’S remaining candidates are scrambling to raise money before next Tuesday's primary in New Hampshire. Mitt Romney already has built up a substantial campaign fund. He has spent more than $17 million on advertising since last January. Michelle Bachmann has announced she's dropping out of the race after her last place finish in Iowa. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Presidential Candidate): I have decided to stand aside. But make no mistake, I’ll continue to be a strong voice. I'll continue to stand and fight for the country and for the American people, and for our freedom, because Mr. Franklin and all the founders, all the men, all the women who have given their last full measure of devotion, and our military, our veterans, are watching us. LEE WEBB: Gov. Rick Perry, though, as decided to stay in the race at least for now. Many observers had thought he would drop out after a poor showing in Iowa. Pat, what do you make of this? Some of the pundits are thinking that maybe if Perry gets out, too, that's going to make it tougher on Romney, because a lot of the more cultural conservatives are going to go behind Santorum. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, that's exactly right. By having Perry in the race, they're going to split the evangelical vote. I'm sorry about Michelle Bachmann. She holds a law degree from Regent University, and she has been a superb lawyer and a very fine Congresswoman. I hope she continues in Congress, but it was a problem in terms of too much attacking. She attacked too many people too often, and it didn't come through as presidential. I'm sorry, but she is a very fine person, and we wish her the very best. This thing is going to heat up. Remember, there are not that many social conservatives in New Hampshire. So Rick Santorum is a fantastic person, but he's going to have some problems in New Hampshire. When he hits South Carolina, it may be a different story, but now Perry is going to be gearing up down there. But I just don't feel that the stop and go is going to do well for Perry. I don't think he's coming through now as somebody who's really going to win. He's kind of like playing with it. And once you begin to play with it, you're not going to win. So that's a problem. But right now the odds are on the money, people. It's a money game, who can buy the TV spots, who can get their message out in these bigger states, and as you go out of the tiny, little, retail politics in Iowa and New Hampshire, and you move out into South Carolina, and then from there to Florida, it is strictly a big money, who can buy TV, who can have the organization, and the answer to that right now seems to be Mitt Romney. Lee. RETIREMENT SAVINGS LEE WEBB: The children of baby boomers are doing a better job of saving for retirement than their parents did. TD Ameritrade found that around a quarter of Americans born between 1965 and 1989 say they're using two accounts to build up their savings: a 401k plan at work as well as a personal IRA. But the survey finds that only 16 percent of baby boomers are putting money into both types of accounts. Younger people are saving more, because the current recession has made them more careful about money, and they want to be sure they have enough when they do retire. I think there is something to that, Pat. I’m a baby boomer myself. My parents were products of the rural South. They went through the depression down there. They went through World War II. They had a much greater appreciation for money than my generation has, I believe. PAT ROBERTSON: Oh, your generation was Katy bar the door. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Don’t look at me like that. PAT ROBERTSON: “We’ve won the war. Let's live it up!” You know, eat, drink, and be merry; tomorrow we die. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, it's a little more serious today, I think. PAT ROBERTSON: Baby boomers have fueled this enormous expansion. They have been very productive and extremely high-salaried people. And their bounty has fueled this incredible boom we've had in the last 10 or 15 years. So what do you call them? I never know whether it's Y or X generation Y, or whatever's coming up. They're more conservative than their daddies. TERRY MEEUWSEN: I think so. But it's a little tough, because we've given them so much. It's hard to learn to hold back. But we're all having to do that today, aren't we? PAT ROBERTSON: Amen. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, up next, an unusual treatment that helped an Alzheimer's patient drastically improve, and it doesn't require a doctor or even a prescription. GRAPHIC: CURE FOR ALZHEIMER’S We’re going to tell you what that is when we come back. And then later on we'll be taking your questions for Pat. GRAPHIC: GOT A QUESTION FOR PAT? It's time that the People's voice be heard. Spokesman: Americans have spoken in record numbers to repeal Obamacare. On October 5th we delivered 1.6 million petitions to the Senate making it the largest citizen petition drive in US history. Now we urgently ask all previous Repeal Obamacare petition signers, and a million more concerned Americans to pick up the phone within the next 10 minutes. We must convince these senators to honor the will of the American people. Add your voice to immediately bring Obamacare to the floor of the Senate for a new vote. We are asking all original petition signers, plus one million more concerned Americans, to call now to send massive waves of phone demands into the Senate. Man: I would actually carve those words into my body. “Loser,” “failure,” “rejected.” LEE WEBB: Tomorrow. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: I was given a book called, Alzheimer's Disease, What If There Was a Cure. It was written by Mary Newport. She’s an MD, and it's a touching story of how much she loved her husband and watched her husband slipped into Alzheimer's. She began to look for something that was a cure. They don't have one so far. But she found something that can be extremely beneficial to people with mental impairment of that nature. TERRY MEEUWSEN: And there’s lots of them. PAT ROBERTSON: Five million people, Terry. It's such a tragedy. As I say, it is heart breaking to see somebody you love, somebody you care about, who suddenly is slipping into his that dark night. Well, is there a cure? Alzheimer's Disease, What If There Was a Cure. In this book, somebody's gave it to me. I don't know where you can get it, but I'm sure . . . . TERRY MEEUWSEN: Everywhere. PAT ROBERTSON: Everywhere these books are okay. Well, five million as I said, Americans have Alzheimer's, and that number is expected to grow its potentially as baby boomers get older. Our health reporter Lorie Johnson shows us how Coconut oil, coconut oil can slow the progression of Alzheimer's, possibly even prevent it. Watch this. FOCUS: COCONUT OIL LORIE JOHNSON (Tampa, FL): Steve Newport's Alzheimer's disease has slowed considerably. Some of his symptoms even reversed, thanks to the unlikely treatment prescribed by his wife, Dr. Mary Newport, a physician who runs a neonatology ward at a Tampa, FL, hospital. She became determined to help her husband after he failed the so called “Alzheimer's clock test.” Dr. Mary Newport: He drew a few little circles and several numbers just in a very random pattern, didn't really look anything like a clock. And the doctor pulled me aside and she said, “You know, he's actually on the verge of severe Alzheimer's at this point. He's beyond moderate.” So that was very, very devastating news. LORIE JOHNSON: Dr. Newport began learning everything she could about her husband's disease. Dr. Mary Newport: It appears to be a type of diabetes of the brain, and it's a process that starts happening at least 10 or 20 years before you start having symptoms, and it's very similar to type I or type II diabetes in that you develop a problem with insulin. LORIE JOHNSON: In this case, insulin problems prevent brain cells from accepting glucose, their primary fuel. Without it, the cells eventually die. But there is an alternative fuel, ketones, which the cells easily accept. Ketones are metabolized in the liver after you eat medium chain triglicerides, which are found in coconut oil. So, Dr. Newport added coconut oil to Steve's diet. Just two weeks later, he took the clock test again and, as you can see, demonstrated stunning improvement. Dr. Mary Newport: I thought at the time, “Was it just good luck? Was it a lot of prayer? Was it the coconut oil?” And I thought “Well, we're going to keep the coconut oil going.” LORIE JOHNSON: Then three weeks later, he took the clock test a third time and continued to get better, and it wasn't just intellectually, he also improved emotionally and physically. Dr. Mary Newport: He was not able to run; he was able to run again. He could not read for about a year and a half, but after somewhere around two or three months, he was able to read. Instead of being very sluggish, not talking very much in the morning, he would come out with energy, and talkative, and joking, and he could find his water and his utensils. LORIE JOHNSON: Dr. Newport documented Steve's success in a book titled, Alzheimer's Disease: What If There Was A Cure? She received this stack of "thank you" letters from people whose loved ones’ whose Alzheimer's was helped after they followed Steve’s diet. And while coconut oil is encouraging, there's actually something much more powerful. A team of biochemists, led by Professor Kieran Clarke at England's Oxford University, have developed a ketone ester that packs a punch ten times greater than coconut oil. Kieran Clarke (Oxford University): It reaches quite considerably higher levels, and you can get whatever levels you want depending on how much you drink. LORIE JOHNSON: The problem is they need millions of dollars to mass produce it. Kieran Clarke: It's very expensive. And so we can't make very much of it ourselves, and what we would like is funding so we could actually scale up and make it. But, of course, there's no real profit in manufacturing stuff like that. LORIE JOHNSON: So until a high potency ketone ester is available to the general public, coconut oil is still a good ketone source. Just make sure it's pure, non-hydrogenated. Avoid any hydrogenated oil, which is the same thing as dangerous trans fat. Many people avoid coconut oil, because they think it's bad for them. But it's actually very healthy. Dr. Beverly Teter is a researcher at the University of Maryland who specializes in dietary fats. She says years ago, coconut oil was criticized for raising cholesterol. But scientists have since learned there are two kinds of cholesterol: LDL, the bad kind, and HDL, which is very good for you, and is the kind coconut oil raises. Dr. Beverly Teter (University of Maryland): So they’d put out the message that it increased serum cholesterol, but the truth of the matter was, it was helping the profile of the serum cholesterol. That never has been corrected in the public press, and I think that's the reason people have misconceptions about it. LORIE JOHNSON: So, not only does coconut oil improve your cholesterol levels, Dr. Teter says the way it helps the brains of some Alzheimer's patients can be extended to people with Parkinson's disease, ALS , epilepsy, dementia, even schizophrenia and autism. And one more thing, Coconut oil is a natural antibiotic that also helps kill viruses like HIV and herpes viruses. Dr. Beverly Teter: The coconut oil tends to keep the bacteria down so that if you're assaulted with a virus, your immune system can concentrate on the virus. It doesn't have to concentrate on 27 other bacteria that you may have been exposed to that day. LORIE JOHNSON: So consider coconut oil to improve your overall health and perhaps even go so far as to stave off life threatening diseases. Lorie Johnson, CBN News. PAT ROBERTSON: Well, that ester the British scientist has developed, they can't get any money. Alzheimer's cost billions and billions and billions. But apparently there's no profit, because the drug companies make profit, and somebody putting out something as natural like this can't have a profit. If there was any reason for the United States government to start spending some serious research money, it's on fixing Alzheimer's. It is a thing that is devastating, devastating to families. And if there is ester which they say could be 20 times, 100 times more effective than this coconut oil. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well . . . . PAT ROBERTSON: Do you ever use coconut oil? TERRY MEEUWSEN: I have not. I had no idea it was . . . . PAT ROBERTSON: It comes in a nice little jar. TERRY MEEUWSEN: I thought it was solid like that until you melted down. PAT ROBERTSON: Yeah, but it melts. I'm sure the dietitians, they won’t to applaud what I'm going to say, but please don't write many letters. I can't take it. I like grilled cheese sandwiches. And I grill them in coconut oil in a skillet. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Now how did you know to do that? PAT ROBERTSON: I learn things when I'm young. TERRY MEEUWSEN: You are unbelievable. PAT ROBERTSON: You put in underneath the bread, and it comes out so delicious. It tastes wonderful, and it's good for you while you're doing it. TERRY MEEUWSEN: I guess so on many levels. I mean that list of potential things it could impact was just astonishing. PAT ROBERTSON: But it’s kind of ugly looking. It's kind of white, and it comes in this thing. You spoon it out, but it melts right down if you want to melt it. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Unbelievable. I'm coming to your house for a grilled cheese sandwich today. PAT ROBERTSON: Oh, they're delicious! TERRY MEEUWSEN: That’s amazing. PAT ROBERTSON: I would probably cook age-defying pancakes in coconut oil, too. Okay, we've got a free fact sheet available to you. Well, that's what Chip Lapole, and his wife had in mind when they traveled to Mexico. But this couple let down their guard in Cancun, and they picked up a monkey on their backs. CHIP LAPOLE ANDREW KNOX: Chip Lapole was a successful engineer, but what drove him was not the idea of making better automotive parts; it was cocaine. For years he hit his drug problem. Chip Lapole: I’d bring it to work with me, and actually do drugs while I was at work so that I could stay awake and I could stay alert. It got to the point where I couldn't function well without it. ANDREW KNOX: Chip’s father left the family when Chip was only a child. Chip Lapole: And I had actually hatred in my mind and in my heart for him, and when I would get high on the marijuana or get loaded on alcohol, and ultimately on cocaine, it would take away the pain from that early childhood experience. ANDREW KNOX: In college, Chip’s life was centered around parties, sex, and getting high. Chip Lapole: I was always the guy that you go out to the see out at the clubs that had a couple hundred bucks in his pocket and a couple grams of cocaine in his pocket. ANDREW KNOX: By the time Chip got out of school and started working, he was a functional addict. One night at a bar, he met Tonette. Chip Lapole: Seeking something more than the one-night-stand type relationships, that I have had for so many years, I started to care about her so much that I just felt like I wanted to get married to do the right thing. ANDREW KNOX: Chip asked Tonette to marry him. He thought about leaving his party lifestyle to become a responsible husband. Instead, he got Tonette hooked on cocaine. Chip Lapole: I felt an artificial partnership almost like. Like now I were sharing everything with her that made me feel good. In reality, that's really what started the demise of our relationship, and ultimately of her life. ANDREW KNOX: Despite their lifestyle, Tonette wanted to have the wedding in her childhood church. But the pastor insisted they go through marriage counseling before the wedding. By then Chip was ready to talk about where his life was going. Chip Lapole: And I said, “Well, Pastor Hal, I don't care so much about us getting married as they do about getting my life right with God.” Here I was crying out to this man, saying I want to know the Lord. Rescue me. The very next day I went to meet with him, October 16th, 1997, and about 6 o'clock, and at 6:22 PM, I gave my life to the Lord. Chip and Tonette married. They both stopped using cocaine and drinking alcohol. All was well until three years later when they took a trip to Cancun Mexico. Chip Lapole: I thought to myself, you know what, this wouldn't be a big deal, we could have just one drink. And then we had one more margarita, and that led to a second margarita, and a third margarita, and then we were doing tequila shots and got totally drunk. She looked at me and said, you know what, a couple lines of cocaine would be really great right now. And I said yeah, I’ll betcha I can find it. And two hours later we were sitting in a motel room doing cocaine. ANDREW KNOX: That decision opened a door that should have stayed closed. Because when they got home, they went back to using cocaine. Chip Lapole: So here I'm trying to hold my job down, and doing cocaine sometimes without any sleep, the next day going to work. I realized I was on a self-destruct path. ANDREW KNOX: For the next two years, the couple stayed high, and they fought constantly. One day after an argument, Chip stormed out of the house and checked into a motel. Chip Lapole: I told her I just couldn't take it anymore, and she was begging me to come home, and I said, “No, I can't come home.” ANDREW KNOX: Chip took a couple of days to cool off, then went home. Chip Lapole: I want through the house, and I yelled, “Tonette, Tonette!” And I started walking up the stairs and there was stuff written on mirrors with lipstick, and I thought this is crazy, I didn't even take time to read it. I just went back down. I thought, “I've got to see if her car is here.” And I opened up the garage door, and her car was there, and the garage smelled real smoky, and I looked in the car, and I could see her slumped over in the car, and I was yelling “Tonette, Tonette!” And her eyes were wide open, and she didn't respond to me. ANDREW KNOX: After his wife’s suicide, Chip was wracked with guilt. His drug addiction consumed him. Eventually he lost everything. Chip Lapole: I started staying at homeless shelters. I literally, when the money ran out, ended up walking the streets homeless and addicted. ANDREW KNOX: Even though he struggled for years with his cocaine habit, Chip never felt abandoned by God. Chip Lapole: I believed that the Lord loved me. I never blamed Him for my circumstances. I just kept crying out to him. Number one, that I wanted to be free. ANDREW KNOX: Time after time, Chip went through cycles of getting on his feet and then falling back into his old habit. But one day, the cycle was broken. Chip Lapole: I was driving down the road, and I went to put the crack cocaine into my pipe and to lift it to my mouth with the lighter, and I looked in the rearview mirror, and I heard this clear as a bell, as clear as I'm speaking to you, “You don’t need that,” and I took that pipe, and I threw it out the window, and I took the cocaine and I threw it out the window. ANDREW KNOX: That day, Chip was set free from a 30-year addiction. Chip Lapole: Wow! It felt like I came home, like I came home, like I was in this place that I didn't know where I was, but now I'm home. And that my life was going to count for something. I knew it was. I knew God would use it, and I knew I was free. ANDREW KNOX: Today, Chip helps recovering drug addicts stay free through the power of God's love. Chip Lapole: When I look back at my life, I truly believe that my life is the story of the prodigal son. The Lord blessed him with so much, and he went out and he squandered it. And yet because of God's unconditional love and fatherly nature, his father embraces him and loves him back to life. That's my daddy. That's my father. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT MINISTER SALVATION PAT ROBERTSON: What a story! You know, the only time in the Bible where it records the God ran, is the father who ran to his son. The prodigal came home, and he had this speech all prepared about what a bad person he was, and how sorry he was, and all he was asking was to be put out with his hired hands of his father, to give him a square meal to eat. And the father called for a celebration. He called for a celebration. He said bring the robe. Put shoes on his feet. Put a ring on his finger. Kill the padded calf. My son was dead, now he's alive. Listen, God loves you. He’ll have a celebration in your honor. The Bible says there's joy before the angels of my father over one sinner that repents. Do you want to make Heaven in an uproar today? You pray and ask God to take you home. Take you to be part of Him. Take you to be part of His family. Now I'm going to pray a prayer for you, and I'm going to ask you to listen to what I'm saying and repeat that for after me, and all I'm asking you to do is to mean it in your heart as you say the words, you mean them in your heart. And this will be a surrender to a God who loves you. And He's got his arms open to you to welcome you home. Not to condemn you, but to welcome you home. Tell your head right now. Pray these words. “Jesus.” That’s right, pray with me, “Jesus, you know what I've done. You know the opportunities squandered. You know what I've done to myself and you know what I've done to others. God, I'm sorry. Father I'm sorry. Take me home, Lord. I come to you, because I want to go to my father's house. And I say to you, Lord, Jesus Christ, I believe you die for me. And I believe you rose again, and that you are King of Kings and Lord of lords. And so right now, Lord, I say come into my heart. Live your life in me. And I will live for you, and I will serve you all the days of my life. Thank you Lord, that you've heard my prayer. And thank you that you have come into my heart.” And Father, for those who prayed with me just then, neither power of the Holy Spirit come into their lives. Fill them Lord, in Jesus name. Amen.” GRAPHIC: 1-800-759-0700 CBN.COM PAT ROBERTSON: Yes, the angels are rejoicing. I want you to be established in what you have just done. You made a decision. You prayed with me, and you believed it in your heart, and right now Jesus has heard, and He's answered. I want to give you something. A little while ago I went into the audio room here, and I made a 73-minute CD, told you all about the things that you've just done . . . . The governor of Washington state has come out in favor of gay marriage. Democratic Gov Chris Gregoire says she has battled with the issue, because she is Catholic; but she now supports legalizing same-sex marriage in her state. Gregoire says she believes quote, “Religions can decide what they want to do, but it’s not okay for the state to discriminate.” A spokesman for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle says, the legislator should uphold the current legal definition of marriage as between a man and a woman. The state has already passed what's known as the “everything but marriage” bill. It gives full rights to homosexual couples. FIGHT TRAFFICKING JOHN JESSUP: A group of Christian students donated $100,000 to the city of Atlanta to help fight human trafficking. But you are about to meet her pastor who's kept one resolution for the past 12 years along with his church congregation. Take a look at this. SET-UP PIECE Jentezen Franklin isn't your ordinary pastor. He shows his dedication to his church called “Free Chapel” in unique way. He commutes between two locations in Georgia and California. He produces his own weekly show, Kingdom Connection, which is broadcast around the world. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GUEST: PASTOR JENTEZEN FRANKLIN TERRY MEEUWSEN: Welcome back to The 700 Club, the author of, The Fasting Edge, Jentezen Franklin. It's great to have you here. You know, we have visited before, and you've been doing this for a while. How did your church get started on this journey of fasting? Jentezen Franklin (Pastor / Author The Fasting Edge): Well, we began as you mentioned, about 12 years ago. I was doing a fast every year. I just felt this stirring. It seemed like every year as a new year, would approach I felt . . . . TERRY MEEUWSEN: You always did at the beginning of the year? Jentezen Franklin: I kind of felt like a stirring in my heart. I need to prepare my heart for, you know, Lord, what do you want to do in this new year? What are you trying to say to the church? I would fast myself, but about 12 years ago, I challenge the church to join me and was astonished. I thought maybe five or six people would want to do it. But I discovered there's a real desire for people to want to draw closer to God. TERRY MEEUWSEN: When you talk to your Church about doing that, and with the history of how long you've done it, why? What is the benefit of that? Jentezen Franklin: Well, in Mathew 6 when he talks about fasting, it's connected to this Scripture “Seek first the Kingdom.” That's in the same chapter that teaches when you fast. And so, what we teach is how you begin a year is important. When you put Him first, when you clear your agenda, when you say God I'm breaking the routine and the ritual this year. I'm going to seek you first at the beginning of this year, in a time of fasting and prayer, and worship unto you, and just giving myself to you, there is a blessing I believe that comes upon our life. And then He said if you seek Him first, all of these things will be added on down, even though we may forget about the fast that we did in January, because fasting is a short season that has long-term benefits. And God will not forget that we gave Him that year early. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Jentezen, what have you seen God do, because you've been faithful to seek Him first and prioritize Him? Jentezen Franklin: I think, so many things that we wouldn't have time to list, but one of the great things that fasting does is it really takes prayer to a higher level. When you pray, it's powerful, it's important, but there's something about when you put fasting with prayer . . . . TERRY MEEUWSEN: You kind of come to it focused already. Jentezen Franklin: Absolutely. You know I caution people that fasting will not force God to do anything. He's a good God, and He does everything because of His grace. But fasting gets us ready for the answer. Casting prepares us for the will of God in His perfect plan for our life. TERRY MEEUWSEN: I think it's really important to say to people that this is also not, and you make this very clear in your book, if not if I do this, God will do this. There is a rich benefit to us personally in doing this, that exceeds what's God going to do for me. And yet you hear people talk about the fact, that I knew this was a stronghold. There is an element of that, breaking the back of the enemy in your life, or even the life of loved ones by seriously coming to God in this manner. Jentezen Franklin: Yes, is taking back control of your body. If we don't watch it, we can get into such destructive patterns, physically with our bodies, with eating junk food, and you know what we do is we do a three-day, total fast, that begins . . . . TERRY MEEUWSEN: Water only? Jentezen Franklin: Water or juice, whatever. And then we convert over to the Daniel fast which continues for 21 days, and it's no meat, no bread, and no sugar or sweets. Think how healthy. In other words, just vegetables and fruit and drink lots and lots of water, and you're purging yourself, but at the same time, the spiritual benefit is just astonishing. TERRY MEEUWSEN: How do you prepare for that? And what is the first step you take in entering into that journey? Jentezen Franklin: I think it's a made-up mind. Anybody can fast, but you don't kind of say, “Well I'm going to try it and see how it works.” TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yeah, you're really clear about that in the book. Jentezen Franklin: Because you're going to get hungry. So what I've learned is one of the keys is to go ahead and establish the fast and write it down. I'm going to do this and have a purpose. David said, “Is there not a cause?” Why you fasting? What is the purpose? Is it for a child? Is it for direction? All of these are biblical reasons why people fast. Are you facing a great dilemma? Or trial that you need an answer, and a victory in? Than fast about it. I want to encourage people that He really is ready and standing there saying, “If you come after Me in this new year, I'm going to bless you.” TERRY MEEUWSEN: You know also when God gives you an outpouring of the Spirit, because you're seeking Him like that, he also gives you vision for some of the things He wants to accomplish and do. What’s He speaking to you about 2012? Jentezen Franklin: Well, I think one of the great things that God is going to do is give us to find direction. Many people are at crossroads. Many people have hit a level, and they know that there's more but they can't seem to get to that next level. One thing fasting does, is it accelerates the plan in the purpose of God. It's slowing down so that you can take that time to get with God and hear His voice clearly. You begin to develop the sensitivity when you fast, to the Spirit and the voice of God in your heart. TERRY MEEUWSEN: I love that you do this at the beginning of the year. I just think of the Scripture, that says forgetting what is behind, we're going to press forward, and what a great way to do it, focusing on the Lord. This book, Jentezen’s book, is called The Fasting Edge, and it is available wherever books are sold. It was inspiring to me, and as we start this new year, it's never too late to begin. Get a hold of this. It’ll walk you through the journey can give you vision for what God wants in your own life. Thank you, it's great to have you here again. Jentezen Franklin: It’s wonderful to be here. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Pat. PAT ROBERTSON: Jentezen is one of the most extraordinary men of God in this country. But not for Bob and Phyllis. They're enjoying their retirement they always dreamed of thanks to one full-proof investment. Watch this. Mia Evans-Saracual: When Bob and Phyllis Villanti were newlyweds and expecting their first child, they were nervous about their finances. Bob Villanti: I was driving for a company, and I got laid off. When she was pregnant with my son, Mark, she was out of work, and so was I. Phyllis Villanti: We didn’t know how we were going to pay for the hospital bills or anything. Once the baby came, we had a hard time paying the rent, even. Mia Evans-Saracual: Bob found temporary jobs to get him through, but over the years, his struggles with employment led to depression. That’s when he began to search for God. A friend prayed with him to accept Jesus as his Savior. Phyllis, too, became a Christian. Bob Villanti: The 700 Club happened to come along, and they introduced me to a remarkable world I never knew existed. I found myself feeling hope that I never had before. Mia Evans-Saracual: As the couple grew spiritually, they learned the principle of tithing through Pat Robertson’s teaching. Bob Villanti: As I started reading in Malachi about tithing, I said, “This must be what God wants me to do, tithe.” Phyllis Villanti: When he started telling me about giving, tithing ten percent, I said, “How are we going to do this?” Bob Villanti: But now I felt that He told me what He wanted me to do. I should do it and see what happens. And I began to see that as I did, things started getting better financially. I got better benefits, holidays, everything that I needed. It was remarkable to see how the Word of God just explodes and becomes reality in your life. Mia Evans-Saracual: Because of their faithfulness in tithing, Bob and Phyllis were able to retire three years ago. They are 700 Club Gold members and still watch The 700 Club every day. Bob Villanti: I’ve gotten everything that I wanted. I’m not talking about loads of money, and I’m happy. I’m content. He made me content, and that’s what’s important. Everyone should be a partner with CBN. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PAT ROBERTSON: Man, those guys are blessings. They're wonderful people, and I thank God for them. GRAPHIC: 1-800-759-0700 CBN.COM You know, I don't know about this retirement. I was talking to the Lord, and he says, “How can you rest when there are millions of people that I want in Heaven, and they're going to Hell?” TERRY MEEUWSEN: Well, you know what of the great things about retirement for people, though, it is you have time to devote yourself to things that matter, and you don't have to worry about making a living to support your family, and all of this. You can finally give yourself to things, I mean, you give yourself to it anyway. But I’m saying for the average person, it's a great opportunity to invest herself in things. Wonderful. PAT ROBERTSON: That’s right. Well, that's what we're doing here, isn’t it? TERRY MEEUWSEN: Yes, we are, and you are. PAT ROBERTSON: Okay. Well, ladies and gentlemen, I want to offer you something, and I think is very important. It's called “Pledge Express.” GRAPHIC: YOURS WITH PLEDGE EXPRESS 1-800-759-0700 CBN.COM You know, I got an e-mail today from a dear man who gave me the Aaronic blessing. It was so nice. I asked my staff, how did this come in? “Oh, it was email.” Well people are used to doing stuff electronically. We would ask that you would consider joining the 700 Club, but doing it electronically. You tell your bank. Make it an electronic transfer. TERRY MEEUWSEN: It’s automatically. PAT ROBERTSON: It's automatically. It saves a lot of postage, and stuff back and forth, and it gets your job done quickly. You can stop anytime you want to. So when you make your pledge, just put on there “Pledge Express,” and we want to send you something every month, called Power For Life. I teaching either that I have done, or Gordon’s done, and I think you'll enjoy it. Okay, questions quick. TERRY MEEUWSEN: Questions from our chat room. Doris says, “I’d like to vote, but frankly I just don't like any of the candidates. Is it a sin not to vote?” PAT ROBERTSON: No, it's not a sin not to vote. But let me tell you, you will decide who is going to run your country. Are you going to have it tending towards socialism, or are you going to have attending towards free enterprise? Are you going to have abortion on demand? Are you going to have your money used to pay for abortion? TERRY MEEUWSEN: Actually, to not vote is really to, in a sense, vote for the other candidate, right? PAT ROBERTSON: Keep this in mind. You are not voting for perfection versus somebody else. There are no perfects. So you're voting for one of two imperfect people. So pick somebody who has points of view closer to the Bible, and then vote for them. Okay. TERRY MEEUWSEN: This is Diana who says, “What exactly is God's covenant with us? PAT ROBERTSON: Well, the covenant of God made with the world was when He created the Earth, you know. That's the original covenant. Then He made a covenant with Noah. He said, “I'm not going to curse the world again. I'm not going to flood the world.” And He said, “Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth.” So, the covenant is “I'm going to be with you.” He had a covenant with Israel. “If you do these things, I will be your God, and you will be My people.” That's His covenant. I wish we had more time, but we don't. Tomorrow, the legacy of the little angel of Tucson who was gunned down and at the rally for Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford's.
