There were times I felt God had forgotten me. I was poverty-stricken, homeless, and ashamed, and believed I was never going to win in my life. I didn't understand how things worked or how His Kingdom worked. There was so much going on. I didn't know if God was for me. I was down and out but at least I had my good name, or so I thought.

In 1 Kings 21, we meet Naboth. He owned a vineyard and King Ahab wanted the vineyard for a garden (vs. 1-3). This vineyard was in Naboth's family, and he did not want to give it up, even if it meant receiving better property (vs. 4). There are things in our lives that have personal value to us. In Naboth’s case, it was his family’s land, and in my case, it was my name.

My name and my reputation were priceless. It is hard to have a good name in a world that is full of temptation. A tough life like I had makes it easy to sell it to the highest bidder. However, I would not give it up to the devil and his tricks for anything.

In my situation, someone told a lie about me and ruined my reputation. I had to fight to prove the truth, but I was not alone—God was with me. I would not have won if it wasn't for the Lord. Of course, when I was going through the test, I could not focus on how He could help. I focused on how I was going to help myself or who was going to help me.

Naboth could easily have taken the offer that had greater worldly value but he did not want to give up his inheritance. I believe Naboth knew his worth. Ahab and Jezebel thought they could steal it from him. God would make them pay.

God is for us! So many times, the enemy schemes against us and tries to take what is ours. But God has not forgotten us. The most powerful thing we can do as Christians sometimes is to let God be God. Allow Him to fight our battles and wait on Him for the answer. He is always there in the midst of the turmoil fighting on our behalf. He does things even when it looks like the battle and the fighting is over. We have to remember our life is not our own. God will have the final say.

When your next test comes, try your best to focus on Jesus. He has sent you a helper; you are not alone.

I will lift up my eyes to the hills—from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. (Psalm 121:1-2 NKJV).

No matter the consequences, God has your back.
