Knee Pain Unable to Stop Dance Ministry

Teresa has vivid memories of her childhood dance training.

“I remember getting spanked because I didn’t want to go to ballet class. Later in high school I wanted to learn to dance. I took a modern class. I was so bad I dropped out.”

Teresa admits that her pliés and pirouettes were less than graceful as a child. But she’s more than made up for any deficits in the dance department. She’s now the director of a worldwide worship dance ministry.

She says, “One Sunday at the end of the service, dance burst forth… From that point on, dance just became a natural expression of my love and worship to the Lord.”

For thirty years, Teresa’s love to worship God through dance hasn’t waned. What has diminished is her physical ability to do it. A few months ago, she noticed some troubling symptoms.

She says, “I wasn’t able to do things as easily as I had been before, like kneeling before the Lord, I just noticed that it was a lot harder to get up. Something wasn’t connecting like it was supposed to connect.”

When her symptoms worsened, Teresa became concerned.

Teresa says, “When I would go to kneel, it would be excruciatingly painful and that’s the thing I really didn’t like. The fact that, ‘Lord, are my kneeling days over? I don’t want to not be able to kneel before you because it’s such a sign for me personally of surrender.’”

Teresa says she slowly became resigned to her physical limitations. She says, “ I didn’t think of it as an injury, I just thought I’m getting older.”

Then one morning, Teresa turned on the television.

Teresa says, “I was watching The 700 Club, as I do as often as I can, when Gordon said, ‘someone has problems with ligaments in your right knee. They’ve been stretched, one of them has been torn. You are in severe pain.’ I was praying already, but when he said ‘right knee’ I thought ‘could that be me?’ And when he said that about the torn ligament, I had no idea that I had a torn ligament, so I get up and I’m like, ‘this feels pretty good.’ But I thought the real key is going to be when I kneel down. And when I knelt, there was no pain—I was ecstatic. I was just so thankful and so I got up and knelt down again, just wanting to make sure.”

Today, Teresa is still pain free and teaches six worship dance classes a week.

She says, “He cares about the little things, yes, I’m getting older, yes, I’m slower, I understand that, but He didn’t leave me in the condition that I was in. And whereas I was willing to settle, He was like, ‘No, I want you to be healed.’”
