Mother's day in Afghanistan

As we celebrate Mother's day here in the states, there is one special group of mothers for whom the special day will have to wait - Military moms deployed overseas.

20% of our military today is made up by women, and many of those struggle to strike a balance between the demands career and home life.  For Military moms with small children, things get even more complicated when called up for service in Afghanistan or Iraq, as dads and other family members step in to care for the kids while mom goes off to war.

The announcement last week that women will now be allowed on nuclear submarines means even more moms may soon be kissing their kids goodbye for six months or more while they go off to war.  Regardless of one's opinions on this move, we should all say a prayer this mother's day that each of these combat moms comes home safely.
