Brody File Exclusive: Scott Walker Says Social Issues Should Be Addressed, Just Not 'Centerpiece'

In an exclusive interview with The Brody File, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker says while social issues should be addressed, it shouldn’t be the main focus.

““It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take on those (social) issues, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t address them. They just shouldn’t be the centerpiece and I think the left wants them to be the centerpiece…”

The Brody File did this interview Thursday morning in Washington, D.C. The governor is on a national book tour. His new book is called, Unintimidated: A Governor's Story and a Nation's Challenge.

Let’s be clear about Scott Walker: If he runs for commander-in-chief (or since he’s from Wisconsin, how about we call it Commander-in-Cheesehead), he will have a very realistic shot at winning the GOP nomination. I can see the race playing out as Chris Christie vs Scott Walker, two Republican governors who will position themselves as outsiders who get things done.

However, Walker will have to be careful on how he positions himself politically on social issues. He’s pro-life and pro-traditional marriage but you can tell he’s determined not to get bogged down by liberal Democrats and the media on those issues so he’ll tend to stay away from them. The problem will be when conservative pro-family groups want him to give those social issues more attention.

Gov. Walker: I think the challenge for Republicans, and especially conservatives going forward is the reason they (Democrats) want to get off on that (social issues) is they know when it comes to economic and fiscal issues republicans overwhelmingly have the upper hand because we’re the ones getting things done, actually delivering on improving the economy, delivering on balancing the budget that’s sustainable and responsible and so they want us to get off on a whole section of other issues out there. That doesn’t mean that those issues aren’t important. They are…

Gov. Walker: What I’m saying is we should keep the focus (on economic issues) just like Reagan and other great leaders did. Like I said, I’m pro-life. If you read the book, it tells about for example that we took funding away from Planned Parenthood because it is a highly controversial group to many Americans, particularly many people in my state…

Gov. Walker: It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take on those (social) issues, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t address them. They just shouldn’t be the centerpiece and I think the left wants them to be the centerpiece…
