Ben Roethlisberger: Wisdom Anyone?

By Shawn Brown

Just a few weeks ago on Friday March 5th, a 20-year-old woman accused Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger of allegedly sexually assaulting her inside a women’s bathroom at a nightclub in Milledgeville, GA. This is the second time since 2008 the two-time Super Bowl champion has been accused of allegedly sexually assaulting a woman. Come on, Ben! Didn’t you learn from the first time this happened?

In the 2008 allegation, a woman claimed Roethlisberger allegedly raped her inside his hotel room in Lake Tahoe. This case is still pending and now, two years later, here we go again.

The thing I can’t seem to get past is why he chose to allegedly enter the women’s bathroom in the first place? The Apostle Paul wrote in the New Testament, “Abstain from all appearance of evil.” (1 Thess. 5:22KJV) Even if Ben’s intent was innocent –  not that I’m saying it was or wasn’t – it seems he could have avoided this incident if he hadn’t gone into the women’s bathroom.

Looking back, there have been numerous times where the Lord led me in a particular direction, and for whatever reason I chose to go in the opposite direction. The result? I ended up in a worse place than where I started. James wrote, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers when you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”  (James 1:2-5NIV) If we don’t use the wisdom that we’ve been given (which can come from prior experiences), what good is it to us? Can anyone relate?
