A Sports Blog That's NOT About Brett Favre

By Shawn Brown

Well, on Wednesday, Brett Favre announced he is officially returning to the Vikings for his 20th NFL season, but quite frankly, I’m not buying it until I see him play at very least one down in the regular season. No disrespect to Brett, but the guy does change his mind like the wind changes directions.

That’s all I’ll say about that. Now on to some real shocking news:

49ERS RB GLEN COFFEE CHOOSES GOD OVER THE GLAM LIFE OF THE NFL

It was about this time last season I saw Glen Coffee at the 49ers training facility in Santa Clara, CA, for the start of his rookie season. He showed much promise. In his first season, he rushed for 226 yards and a TD. Going into this season, Glen was slotted as the clear backup to starter Frank Gore. But on August 13 he announced that he wanted to retire citing that he believed God choose another path for his life. I spoke to his agent Todd Crannell on Monday after the announcement, and he told me that Glen had been contemplating this for a while and suddenly made a decision to go back to school and finish his degree.

Sources say he walked away from about two million dollars. Wow! Here is a guy who has his priorities in order. I’ve met Glen, had lunch together and he is really a remarkable gentlemen. However, I’m humbled by this because it reminds me of the verse in Mark 8:36, For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Here are a couple of quotes from Glen:

“I feel like it’s His will,” Coffee said. “It’s something that I really feel like I shouldn’t have entered the NFL in the first place. I don’t know what call God has for my life, but it isn’t football. I’ll be happier, not necessarily because I’m out of football, but because I’m letting Him do His work. Whether it was leaving football or leaving something else, another job, it doesn’t matter. I’ll be happy because I’m following His will.”

“A lot of people aren’t going to understand,” he added.  “True happiness is glorifying Christ. That’s what true happiness is. And for me, that wasn’t the NFL. That wasn’t where I needed to be.”

Enough said.
