The tribes of Gad and Reuben said again, “We are your servants, and we will do as the LORD has commanded!” Numbers 32:31 (NLT)

It seemed like every week my car had a breakdown. My dad would have to come and get me. He would tinker with it for a few days to get it working, but it wouldn’t be long before it broke down again. This went on for what seemed like a lifetime. If you’ve been in this situation, then you know the frustration—not knowing if you’ll be able to get where you need to be. This happened in the early years of my walk with Christ. I remember my pastor at the time telling me that it was a test, and to keep the faith and continue to serve the Lord.

As a new believer, I couldn’t understand why this was happening. I believe now that it was a test—a test to see if I could serve the Lord with gladness (Psalm 100:2) and bless Him at all times (Psalm 34:1). I followed my pastor’s advice and continued to serve. I worked closely with her and watched her serve God’s people selflessly. I watched her do everything for the church without complaining. Seeing her put God’s Word into practice gave me a clearer picture of how Christ served.

And he sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, “Whoever wants to be first must take the last place and be the servant of everyone else.” Mark 9:35 (NLT)

I mirrored her example of servanthood despite my situation. My car continued to break down. There were times when I was on the side of the road and she and her husband would come to pick me up. This went on for quite some time. But I kept serving—sowing into the kingdom with my time, talent and offerings.

One day I received a phone call at work. It was a car dealership telling me that I was qualified to get a vehicle! I was so excited to hear the news that I cried tears of joy right there at my desk. The salesman went above and beyond to get me the best deal possible.

We are the Lord’s servants and are called to do what He commands. It’s not always easy, but we hold onto our faith knowing that all things are working together for our good, and no good thing will He withhold from us. (Romans 8:28, Psalm 84:11)

Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Your Son Jesus Christ, who served faithfully—even unto death. Give us a servant’s heart that will please You. Forgive us when we fall short and allow us to move forward in You. You are Alpha and Omega and hold time and space in Your hands. Strengthen our hands for the tasks that You have set before us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
