My husband Michael and I were excited to welcome our second child, a son. He had been working on his job for over 15 years, and two weeks before our son was to be born, he was laid off. My husband responded in panic, then anger at the lack of devotion the company showed him after the years of loyalty he had shown them.

In the midst of this troubling circumstance, the peace of the Lord came over me, very much so as is described in Philippians 4:7 (KJV):

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

I said this prayer, “Lord, show Yourself strong to Michael. Help him to know You in a different way.” And He did just that!

You see, Michael carried the health insurance for us, and it was due to terminate at the end of the month. Our son was born on November 30th — just in time to be covered by his insurance. What timing! And what a testimony to God caring for us.

Not only that, but additional funding to cover expenses came from another policy he had with his former employer. We didn’t go without while Michael was unemployed. This experience opened our eyes even more to the mighty sustaining Hand of Our Father.

Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? (Matthew 6:26-27)

We got to see how this Scripture applied to our lives. God takes care of the birds and He certainly looked after us.

This passage in Matthew 6 goes on to describe several examples of why we should not worry about our basic needs for clothing, food, and drink; and how our heavenly Father knows that we need them and will provide for us. The last two verses tell us what to do:

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof (v. 33-34).

Michael ended up getting a job making three times more than what he was making at his old employer. We never needed to worry. God provided and He always does ... in His way and in His timing.

How about you? Can you trust God outside of your comfort zone? Do you believe that God will always provide for your needs? That He has more for you?

Pray with me:
Oh Lord, Our God. How excellent is your name in all the earth. Truly You are a mighty and loving Father. Thank You for showing Your love towards Your Children. Lord, we come petitioning You to help us to trust You with all our hearts. Help us to embrace the new things that You are doing in our lives and forget those things which are behind us. You alone are our Help and we look to You each day. We love You, Lord. You alone are worthy of honor, glory, and power. In the mighty name of Your Son, Jesus. Amen.
