Is Your Family Spiritually Healthy?

Happy mom with son

Spiritual health is important. Everything in our bodies is connected, including our spirit. I feel better physically when I feel better mentally.

As a mom of three young children, I’ve allowed myself to get overwhelmed by small things in my life, big things too. My faith, at times, falters. When this happens, it affects my parenting.

I look back on my worst moments and think, ‘If I had only trusted God’s plan….’ I know that I could’ve been more effective as a mother and healthier as a woman of God. We can trust the Lord. We can lay our problems at His feet. He will take care of us. How easy that is to forget on a bad day?

When I show my children how easy it is for me to stress compared to how easy it is for me to trust in God, I am not showing them faith.

If your family is having trouble, try what my family is doing this year to strengthen our faith...

1. Be committed to devotions. I can tell you that waking up a little earlier to spend your mornings with God is one of the most peaceful things you can do. Read your Bible. It is, after all, the best guide to overcoming stress.
2. Let go of negative people, influences, and situations. Make no apologies for saying goodbye to people who harm your spirit. Understand that being a doormat for others teaches your children to do the same.
3. Make it a family affair. Spend time with your children nightly. Read Bible stories or do crafts that revolve around faith and trusting God. (I will highlight some of these in my next post.)
4. See the mind, body, and spirit connection. One of my favorite ways to unwind after a hard day or to prepare myself for something that could overwhelm me is to walk and listen to scripture or Christian music. (My personal favorite is Tenth Avenue North.)
5. Pray more. Remind yourself of the scripture, “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). God hears what we say.
6. Join a group at your church. Sometimes we feel alone and fail to realize that other people can offer us good counsel because they too may have been through it or just have the biblical wisdom to help us along.
7. Help others more. This is a great way for us to show and know God’s love.
