Investment Advice from the Bunny Slope

I don’t know about you, but I am too easily pleased. Looking for joy and satisfaction in all the wrong places.

What about you?

C.S. Lewis said this:

“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”

Why is it that I am so easily pleased? I think I have the answer.

A lack of faith.

My faith barely registers on the “faith map.” I’ll give you an example.

Several years ago, I tried skiing with some friends in Colorado. Their daughter and I took the Learn How to Ski in 90 Minutes Ski Class.

Let’s just say if there were a hidden camera, we would have resembled a Lucille Ball episode. We did finish—made it down the bunny slope with only 6 falls and a boatload of laughter.

My teenage friend and I met up with her mom. “Linda, we finished! We made it down the bunny slope!” Then we high-fived.

“Okay,” Linda said. “Let’s try this slope,” she said pointing to a place on the place-mat-sized ski map. It registered about 1/3 of the way up. I looked for our bunny slope.

After a long minute, I found it—barely ¼ inch from the bottom.

Over the years, my faith has been like that bunny slope. Believing I’ve achieved great things, only realizing my faith barely registers on the faith map.

My inclination is to invest in this world instead of investing in heaven. Take a look at Hebrews 11:13-16:

All these people died still believing what God had promised them. They did not receive what was promised, but they saw it all from a distance and welcomed it. They agreed that they were foreigners and nomads here on earth. Obviously people who say such things are looking forward to a country they can call their own. If they had longed for the country they came from, they could have gone back. But they were looking for a better place, a heavenly homeland. That is why God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. (NLT)

The Lord offers me a holiday at the sea, and I’m making mud pies.

People of faith look toward heaven and invest in it. I call it the I2H stock ... Investing In Heaven.

Grab on to this other Scripture quoted from Isaiah 64:4:

"That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, 'No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.'" 1 Corinthians 2:9 (NLT)

My desire is to stop playing in the dirt and invest in heaven.

Could we pray that for each other, friend?
