Teaching Children Bible Stories

The Bible is God’s gift of knowledge to us. Every story, parable, and verse is meant to guide us through life. The Bible is as relative today as it was centuries ago, which is why it’s called the Living Word. Bible stories apply to our daily lives; everything is meant to be shared and known to us. That’s why it is so important for us to make these God's words memorable to our children.

When your kids learn to use the Bible in their daily lives, it will improve their relationship with God. It also will give them a greater understanding of God's will and help guide them in a way that only God and His eternal wisdom can.

Often, it is best to keep it simple when sharing the Bible’s wisdom with children. You do not need to read straight from the Bible in order to share them. There are many fun ways to bring these stories to life for your children.

The Bible is the most amazing book. It is full of battles, climax, and happy endings and can inspire incredible imagination. Having your children recreate these stories is a great way to memorize and relate to them. Here are a few of my favorite ways:

Create

I love story of Noah. His great faith and determination to obey the Lord is moving. To teach his story to your children, have them build their own boats out of Popsicle sticks and use animal crackers or make animals out of paper to load their boats.

Make a memory game out of it, using index cards with pictures of animals glued on them. Each time a child matches the correct cards, they can add another pair of animals to their boat. Whoever fills their boat the quickest beats the flood and wins the game.

Make baby Moses baskets, You can use a plastic milk jug for this and cut it in half, glue some straw to the outside or glue some fabric on it.

Another craft you could create for is Moses story. Simply, use baby dolls as Moses and have your child send them down the river, you can use a pool or even a bathtub for this.
Build Pyramids out of blocks. And tell the story of Moses and show them how he found his home in Egypt as a baby.

At Christmastime, create a manger out of graham crackers and icing while telling the story of our Savior’s birth.

Plant a garden and describe the beauty of the Garden of Eden. Even have them draw pictures and create a book of them. You can create so many fun activities that are centered on the Bible to help your child learn.

Play

Have your children re-enact scenes straight out of the Bible. They will love to play make-believe acting out some of the greatest history of all time. Buy a plastic whale and a figurine and let your children recreate the story of Jonah and the whale as they take a bath or play in the pool.

Pretend to tear down the walls of Jericho by playing music and marching around your home or their rooms. You can even set up blocks in the center of the room and make a game of how long it will take to knock them down by marching.

They can play David and Goliath, Daniel in the lions den, or they can be Samson strong and ready to take on anything.

You can even have your children put on plays and entertain you or even friends by sharing these wonderful stories. They also can make puppets of their favorite Bible stories.

Buy a Bible storybook

With their own storybook full of illustrations and stories from the Bible, they can thumb through God’s Word themselves. Read the book with them and talk about each story, explaining the main messages God is showing through each one.

Sing

Most of us know the song of Zacchaeus sitting up in the sycamore tree or the song about “Brother Noah” making the Ark, or even the Sunday School favorite, “Father Abraham”. Creating songs or using songs you are familiar with are great ways to share Bible stories with kids.

Relate

This is the most important way. The first step to making the Bible relevant in your child's life is to relate the parables to his or her day.

If your child felt left out when he wasn’t picked for the team, share how Joseph was abandoned by his brothers or how Zacchaeus, who was favored by Jesus, was despised by his neighbors.

Whatever stories you do share, tell about how Jesus handled life as accounted in the Bible.

Whether it is celebrating or a difficulty they are going through, there is a great story full of principles waiting to be shared right in your Bible.

Once your child begins to familiarize themselves with these stories, they will use them throughout their day. They will have an understanding of what God says about trials and joys.

It is God’s plan for us to use His Living Word in our lives.

How do you share Bible stories with your children?
